INTRODUCTION TO ECG
ECG (ELECTRO CARDIOGRAM)
๏ต Record electrical activity of Heart.
๏ต Used to test irregularities of the Heart functions.
๏ต Conducted by placing skin electrodes on different parts of the body.
ECG Leads:
๏ต โ€œleadโ€ refer to a combination of positive and negative electrode which helps
to view electrical activity of heart in the form of wave in ECG paper.
๏ต To record ECG 12 different leads are placed on the body
Types of lead
๏ต Unipolar: positive electrode are active but negative electrodes are at zero
potential.
๏ต Bipolar: both negative and positive electrode are active.
Bipolar limb leads
๏ต Electrical connections between patients limbs and electrocardiograph by
using positive and negative electrode.
๏ต There are three bipolar limb leads:
๏‚ง Lead I
๏‚ง Lead II
๏‚ง Lead III
Einthoven law
Lead I potential + lead III potential = lead II potential
