The Big Two Beloved River By Ernest Hemingway
Naturalism is an extension to realism that is often much harsher and more unforgiving. There are
many criterion that determine whether a text falls under the category of naturalism. Ernest
Hemingway s mastery of the naturalistic style is evident in his many works as he expertly applies
the many different elements. It is clear that his work falls under the naturalist genre through looking
specifically at his short story The Big Two Hearted River . Though Naturalismis a big part of
Hemingway s writing, one would be remiss to simply stop their analysis on the naturalistic elements
of the story. The Big Two Hearted River goes against the traditional naturalist element of
determinism through the use of the main character s search for recovery... Show more content on

Objectivism is a technique used where the author excludes most, if not all, of the character s
past and identity so that the character becomes a simple observer. In The Big Two Hearted
River , the reader knows very little about the character Nick in order to focus more on the plot
and what happens to the character, rather than the character themselves (Zhang 2.2). The
objectivism of Nick in the story goes a step further. Hemingway s focus on the characters actions
demonstrates how Nick s technique allows him to move beyond the deterministic world to create
his own purpose. Hemingway only includes information about Nick to help the reader understand
what he is trying to achieve. Nick took him by the head and held him while he threaded the slim
hook under his chin, down through his thorax and into the last segments of his abdomen. The
grasshopper took hold of the hook with his front feet, spitting tobacco juice on it. Nick dropped
him into the water (Hemingway 191). Much of the story is a series of descriptions of Nicks actions
much like the example given above. There is not much focus on the characters thoughts or feelings.
Nick s actions are the most important part of the story because they align themselves with his
purpose; to systematically and ceremonially kill, out of necessity rather than for no reason. Nick
reconnects with nature throughout the text, but instead of nature having control over the
consequences of his actions, he is the one who controls the outcome. This goes against the
traditional naturalistic style where characters hopelessly battle against nature and no matter what
they do cannot achieve their goal because nature is stronger and determines the outcome of their
actions. Nick s appearance, age or health have very little to do with the Hemingway s idea of how
to become more masculine , for him men must first use proper technique in order to create meaning

The Difference Between Old, Old And New Imperialism
Imperialism which is defined as the extension of a country s power and influence through
colonisation, use of military force, or other similar means occurred in history during two different
time periods. The first bout of imperialism which is often referred to as old imperialism occurred
between 1492 and 1800 while the new imperialismtranspired between 1870 and 1914 (Scammell,
2004). Although the two movements had some similarities, there were several differences starting
with the motivation behind each wave of imperialism and extending to the economic, ideological,
and political differences (Bush, 2006). Those differences are the reasons why the two waves of
imperialism are often classified as Old and New . This essay will be briefly... Show more content on

New imperialism was motivated by the increased production demands created as a result of the
industrial revolution, technological developments in communication and transportation and the
wave of extreme nationalism (Seton Watson, 1961). During that time period, the acquisition of new
territories was encouraged as a means of expanding profit by investing capital in the various
territories (Seton Watson, 1961). In order to meet the constantly growing demands brought on by
the industrial revolution, imperialist countries sought to expand their territories even further (Seton
Watson, 1961). One major benefit of the expansion was an increase in amount of raw materials
available. Another benefit of acquiring territories included cheap labour which was a necessity
due to the expanding industries (Seton Watson, 1961). Economic growth was another benefit of
territorial expansion as there were more markets to trade with. This second wave of imperialism
encouraged imperialist countries to take political control of their colonies (Seton Watson, 1961).
They created new governments that would also benefit them economically as the local leaders
would no longer have to be paid for their provision of raw materials like they were under the cash
and carry system implemented during the first wave of imperialism. Western imperialist nations
believed that they were far more

The Relationship Between Parents And Children
According to Confucius, for a society to exist in peace and harmony, five great fundamental
relationships have to be respected. These relationships are of father and son, ruler and subject,
husband and wife, elder and younger and lastly but not least, parents and children. There were
appropriate attitudes or the Yi that people were expected to adopt. For instance, fathers were
advised to be kind to their sons and in return, the sons were supposed to be obedient and dutiful
to their fathers. Likewise, rulers were expected to be kind and generous to their subjects while
subjects were supposed to show total loyalty to their rulers. In marriage, a wife was expected to
be obedient and submissive to his husband while the husband was supposed to love and be good
to his wife. Elders, whether brothers or friends, were to be considerate towards their juniors, who
in turn showed respect towards their elders. The most important relationship in which almost the
Chinese culture is based on is the relationship between parents and children. Confucius believed
that a smoothly functioning family; made up of respectful children to parents, ancestors and
relatives were a model for the Chinese society as a whole. In effect, the nation was like a gigantic
family. Just as the son was expected to be loyal to his father, so a citizen was expected to be loyal
to the emperor. If the families were in harmony, society and government would also function
properly. For Confucius, they believed that man

Women Fat Research Paper
Fats in the human body are stored in cells known as adipocytes. Adipocytes, also known as
lipocytes and fat cells, are the cells that primarily compose adipose tissue, specialized in storing
energy as fat. Fat can also be stored as droplets in skeletal muscle cells that hold about 2,000
3,000 kilocalories. Some fat even flows freely through the blood in a human body. Fat is one of the
three macronutrients. Macronutrients are substance required in large quantities in a living
organism. Other than fat, proteins and carbohydrates are macronutrients. Women can carry more
fat than women. The fat in a woman represents around 18% 20% of her body weight. The fat in a
man only represents about 10% 15% of his body weight. There is one main reason for this. That
reason being... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women also often metabolize fat faster than men. Women are also better at burning fat in exercise
than men, making it easier for them to lose the fat that they gain. During exercise, women exhibit
less respiratory exchange ratios than men. This means that women have more fat burning and less
carb burning. Although women can mostly lose fat quicker than men, they can gain it quicker to.
Women make more triglycerides, which is an ester derived from glycerol and fatty acids, than men
do. This means that the fat is being taken up into the adipose tissue at a higher rate in women than
men. Also, even if women generally burn fat simpler, they are more have a higher overall
obesity rate compared to men. 25 percent of adult women in the United States are obese and 20
percent of adult men are obese in the United States. Men generally carry their weight and fat in
their abdominal area, or they have an android body type. Most women carry their fat and weight in
their hips and thighs, which is a pear body type. The difference in the shape of the bod has reasons
that are unknown, but theorists believe that it is based on differences in

E. Cummings Moo Woo
E.E. Cummings words, Moo Woo are fascinating or nothing but gibberish depending on who is
reading them. Author, E.E. Cummings, was a painter and a poet who lived in Cambridge,
Massachusetts in 1849. He had a very unconventional writing style and took inspiration from his art.
This essay will be discussing how E.E Cummings used visual techniques, sound effects, and details
to make his writingmeaningful.
Probably because of his painting background, E.E Cummings used several visual techniques in
his work. For instance, he shaped the words on the page to represent the object in the poem. A
perfect example of this is in E.E Cummings poem l(a . (Doc A) In it, he talked about the first

How Does Enkidu Ability To Communicate With Animals
I.I think Enkidu losses his ability to communicate with animals because he starts to talk to humans
for the first time in his exsistince. If Enkidu had never started to talk to communicate with other
people then he would never would of fufilled his destinany to meet Gilgamesh. Then, later he
would not of died because he upset the gods, but rather something more natural from animals and
such. II.Everything in the story is connected in one way or another, it happens because of
somthing that other charaters did or said. The ony reason that Gilgamesh ever met Enkidu was
because o his love for young women and the gods wanting to control that. Dur to that small detail,

Dichotomy In Rear Window
Alfred Hitchcock once defined his film Rear Window (Hitchcock, 1954), as the story of a man
who cannot move and looks through a window, about what he sees and how he reacts to it
(Truffaut, 1986). In addition, Hitchcock constructs the character of the protagonist of the film, Jeff
(James Steward), not only by using cinematographic devices to show how Jeff interprets what he
sees and his own life, but also stabilising a dichotomy between what he looks at and what he lives.
At the beginning of the film, a camera movement reveals JeffВґs profession and why he is
immobilized in a wheel chair. He is a photographer, interested in looking at otherВґs lives;
consequently, he could be described as a voyeur. Across a very limited space the courtyard... Show

For those reasons, even when he is in a sweet moment with Lisa in his arms, he prefers looking at
the outside of his apartment, and even he feels more sexual attraction towards Miss. Torso
(Georgine Darcy) through the window than towards Lisa, who is in his arms or more explicit,
offering herself in his sofa. Lisa as Thorvald at the end, represents a menace and when he feels
threatened, does not hesitate to take his binoculars (or even the flash), as the only way to prevent
danger.
To sum up, Hitchcock uses a film as Rear window to construct an allegory between reality and
fiction. The end of the film is ambiguous because although Jeff chooses real life, as he presents
his back to the window and to the outside, the clash between reality and fiction has a price, if you
choose fiction probably, you could lose to live in a real society, but if you choose reality, you
could lose your identity, as Jeff. So, inside this film, there is not only one crime, but also other
metaphoric murdered: Jeff, who has renounced to his fantasies to adapt himself in a conformed

Iliotibial Band Syndrome Research Paper
Iliotibial Band Syndrome
Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a condition that often causes knee pain. It can also cause pain in
the outside of your hip, thigh, and knee. The iliotibial band is a strip of tissue that runs from the
outside of your hip and down your thigh to the outside of your knee.
Repeatedly bending and straightening your knee can irritate the iliotibial band.
CAUSES
This condition is caused by inflammation and irritation from the friction of the iliotibial band
moving over the thigh bone (femur) when you repeatedly bend and straighten your knee.
RISK FACTORS
This condition is more likely to develop in people who:
Frequently change elevation during their workouts.
Run very long distances.

A snapping sensation over your knee.
Swelling on the outside of your knee.
Pain or a feeling of tightness in your hip.
DIAGNOSIS
This condition is diagnosed based on your symptoms, medical history, and physical exam. You
may also see a health care provider who specializes in reducing pain and increasing mobility
(physical therapist). A physical therapist may do an exam to check your balance, movement, and
way of walking or running (gait) to see whether the way you move could contribute to your injury.
You may also have tests to measure your strength, flexibility, and range of motion.
TREATMENT
Treatment for this condition includes:
Resting and limiting exercise.
Returning to activities gradually.
Doing range of motion and strengthening exercises (physical therapy) as told by your health care
provider.
Varying your workout to include low impact activities, such as swimming and cycling.

1990 Immigration
Throughout the years America has been chosen as a destination point for immigrants. In the
colonial era majority of migrants came from the Northern European countries. In 1770 during the
Revolutionary War immigrant numbers decreased, but rapidly increased in the 1840s 1850s. New
immigrants mostly came from Ireland and Germany than the European countries. Many immigrants
settled in New York City. By the 1860s New York became the home to over 1 million residents, but
half were immigrants with American born children. When the civil war ended there were many
jobs that needed to be filled so European immigrants filled those positions. Approximately there

In 1990 there was an economic recession that hit the country that accompanied a resurgence of
anti immigrant feeling that included lower income Americans competing for their jobs with the
immigrants that were willing to work for lower wages. Congress passed the Illegal Immigration
Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act in 1996, which addressed border enforcement and the
use of social programs by immigrants. In 2002 the Homeland Security Act was created which
took over many Immigration service and enforcement functions formerly performed by the
Immigration and Naturalization Service. In the year of 2012 there were 40 million immigrants
residing in the U.S. slightly less than half were naturalized U.S. citizens. There were an estimate
of 11.2 million illegal immigrants in America. Majority of illegal immigrants are Latino primarily
from Mexico or Central America, however, there are also illegal Asians, South Americans,

Colonialism, By Lois Tyson Essay
Colonialism, the hunger to expand and conquer causes the world, becomes an endless arena for the
fight for dominance and inevitable discrimination that follows. Even once colonization ends, the
natives are not immediately free because of the aftermath that remains in the dust colonization
leaves behind.
One inevitable result of colonization is the establishment of social hierarchy that continues into
postcolonial society. In Using Colonialism/ Postcolonialism Critical Theory, Lois Tyson eloquently
explains the consequences of colonialism and the different facets of Postcolonialism. First, in a
colonial social hierarchy, unquestionably, the members of the colonizing culture occupy the top
rungs of the ladder (Tyson 248 9). Meanwhile, those who occupy the bottom rungs of the colonialist
social ladder whether their inferior status is based on race... or any other cultural factor are called
subalterns, who are then othered by the colonized, who believe their dominance and authority is
validation for their discrimination (Tyson 249). Through othering, the savage is... therefore, not
considered fully human (Tyson 248). This mindset does not belong purely to the colonists, but
applies to the colonized as well. To elaborate, Tyson uses the term colonized consciousness to
describe subalterns who internalize... the colonialist belief that those different from a society s
dominant culture are inferior (Tyson 249). Consequently, subalterns look to the dominant class s
culture to

Reflection About Basketball
Setbacks are a natural part of life that, yet it seems like I have had more than my share. In my
short seventeen years of living, I have encountered more obstacles than most girls my age.
Though I have encountered multiple setbacks, I have never stopped reaching for my dream. Since
I was young, I ve had the desire to grow up and become a collegiate volleyballplayer. I was told by
numerous coaches that I had a natural talent, things came easy to me. Though the game of
volleyball came easy to me, the obstacles I have faced throughout my career were not easy. I have
been through countless injurieswhich led to multiple seasons sitting out. I have battled the adversity
that has come my way, I have never backed down, my dream remains the same.
The game of volleyball has been a part of my life since the fourth grade. At a young age, I was
playing at elite levels which challenged my growth on and off the court early. Learning to love
the challenge was something that constantly pushed me to be better. Competing at this level
sparked my desire to achieve a collegiate level. The volleyball court is a place where I have always
found my comfort and my confidence. It is a place where I could go to find myself, no matter
what was going on in my life. Injury began to fill my career on the court, which challenged my
passion that was deeply rooted in my heart.

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Carnival Corporation
Carnival Corporation PLC
Internal Assessment
Alyssia Ashley Olarte
School of Travel
University of Hawaii at Manoa
TIM 350
November 17, 2017 Key Internal Forces
Carnival Corporation plc is a global contender with the title of the world s largest cruise and leisure
travel company. The goal of this assessment is to analyze the strengths and weaknesses with the
financial ratio analysis of the company along with conducting an internal factor evaluation matrix to
view the status of the company in comparison with their top competitor, Royal Caribbean Cruises
Ltd.
Top strengths that Carnival Corporation plc has to their advantage would be their strong brand and
major control of the market share. Containing a strong brand portfolio with a total of 10 well
known brands operating about 102 ships. Such brands include Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland
America Line, Princess Cruises and Seabourn in North America; AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises,
Cunard, Ibero Cruises, P O Cruises (Australia) and P O Cruises (UK) under the Europe,
Austrailia Asia segments. Along with Holland America Princess Alaska Tour and the Canadian
Yukon (Olarte, 2017). The company is also the largest cruise company in the world in terms of
cruise passengers with a market share of about 47% followed by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd with
a market share of 23% (Cederholm, 2015).
Example of weaknesses that Carnival Corporation plc has is their safety record. In early 2012,
the Costa Concordia struck off the coast of Isola del Giglio, Italy. In 2013, Carnival Cruise Line
s Triumph reported a fire, which left the ship adrift in the Gulf of Mexico (Carnival Corporation
plc SWOT Analysis, 2016). Among the other cruises, Carnival Cruise Lines have notably been
the worse. In 2009, the Center for Disease Control tracked all major outbreaks, about 56% on
Carnival cruise lines compared to a 48% average market share from 2009 2011. The company is
also accounted for worse safety record for persons lost at sea. Since 2000, about 179 disappearances
happened with Carnival Cruise Line alone (Levin , B., Jones, J., Slade, T., 2012).
Strengths:
1.Carnival Corporation plc has more revenue per employee ratio than Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

Calvin Johnson has been the best wide receivers in the NFL in his whole career being 6 5 240 he
is the toughest receiver to cover and his stats prove it. As seen in the picture from CBS sports.
In 2012 he had 1,964 yards which is the most ever in a season in the entire history of the NFL
and with his stats not dropping that much a lot of people thought he still has a lot of time left to
make an impact in his career. Except he announced a couple weeks ago saying that he was
retiring at only age 30. Many people have there opinions on why he is retiring although he has
not completely said why he is retiring. Granted, retiring at younger ages is becoming more
popular in the NFL but there has never been a player of Calvin s caliber to retire early. Many
experts say that he is retiring just because of how much he got hit during his career, being the

Calvins decision because he s looking ahead in life because life isn t just about football this is a
good point because Johnson has been hurt every season he s played with just minor injuries
keeping him out 2 or 3 games a season. To sum up Calvin Johnson is one of the greatest football
players to ever play in the NFL along with Jerry Rice. Many people have their own feelings on
Calvin s retirement from his teammates to random people in the world like my dad and I. In
conclusion hopefully Johnson will come back for a couple more years or even one but if he doesn t

Valuation Methodology
The valuation of NABR Publishing Ltd encompassed an extensive amount of exercise, and the
valuation required taking into consideration various factors. The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF)
method was used to value the NABR Firm. The DCF Method utilizes the net present value of future
free cash flow projections and discounts the cash flow at a discount rate which was calculated using
two of three options. In turn, this was done using the Weighted Average Cost of Capital(WACC).

Debt and Equity Valuation
This valuation of NABR was based on equity and debt resulting in the financial value of the firm,
and connects with the value of the firm s asset. By using the DCF method, the total fair market
value of the business entity is calculated by discounting future projected cash flows back to the
date of valuation. At the end of the projection period, a residual or terminal value is calculated
and discounted to its present value at the date of the valuation. The theory behind the discounted
cash flow method is that an entity s value is equal to its present value of its expected future cash
flow. This method is considered the most detailed analysis because it is thorough in nature and
aids the owner to get a true picture of the firm value. This consists of certain steps which involve
developing a method to be used to project future earnings of cash flow, a risk adjusted discount rate,
discounting the projected cash flow to the date of the valuation, and capitalizing the terminal year s
projection into a residual value using the discount rate less the growth rate. In this case, we
estimated the growth rate of 2.3%, and the summation of the present values of the discounted cash
flows and terminal value.
This method is the most precise method in comparison to the Venture Capitalist method despite the
notion that there is an uncertainty of cash flow projections. Using WACC to calculate the discount
rate assisted in the calculation of the

Liberal Arts Yay Or Nay Essay
Liberal Arts: Yay or Nay? In recent discussions of liberal arts degrees, a controversial issue has
been whether they are worth getting rather than a vocational degree. On one hand, some argue
that getting a liberal arts degree is a waste of money and there are very limited jobs out there that
a liberal arts degree could be used for. On the other hand, however, others argue that in order to be
a well rounded person and to be more interesting, a student should work towards a liberal arts
degree. According to this view, even though there is not one specific job that the individual will be
trained for while obtaining a liberal arts education, he or she will be feeding their brain and giving
himself or herself a chance to develop better knowledge of subjects in social sciences, literature,
and mathematics. In sum, then, the issue is whether getting a liberal arts education is worth it or
not. My own view is that I believe being an intellectually developed person is extremely important;
therefore, I agree that pursuing a liberal arts education can be very valuable.... Show more content

encompass many different kinds of jobs. One of the misconceptions in Sanford J. Ungar s essay
The New Liberal Arts is that no one wants to hire a person with an irrelevant liberal arts degree.
He then proceeded to explain that in a recent study more than three quarters of employers

Outliers
Elda Espinoza

Sociology 101
Outliers
By Malcolm Gladwell
The Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell attempts to explain the reasons why people become
successful in both controlled and uncontrolled environment. He uses different stories and studies
to explain what makes a person who there are. For example, in chapter one Gladwell says that
successful hockey players if born early in the calendar year this will make them stand out
physically among other boys who are several months younger than they are. Gladwell says that
over time, the opportunities that these players have has help them build up to make them better
players. So, Gladwell uses a sociological perspective to try to explain the reasons for people s
success. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When we look at outliers, when we look at success stories, if we look closely enough, we see
lives with opportunity from the start. To illustrate the importance of culture in success, Gladwell
relates a story of a Colombian pilot who most likely crashed a plane because, even with
diminishing fuel, he wasn t assertive enough to stand up to the intimidating control tower agents
and demand to land. Cultures that encourage passive submission to hierarchy, or who phrase their
questions in subtle, vague euphemisms, may find themselves at a disadvantage in some situations,
such as the airplane cockpit. Other times, your culture works for you. For example, Gladwell
explains that Asians who spent centuries working in rice paddies, a type of farming that requires
meticulous care all year long, passed on this work ethic to their posterity. Many of the inheritors of
the rice paddy culture apply the same diligence in their schoolwork. This diligence, of course,
brings more success.

Children With Down Syndrome
Also known as trisomy twenty one is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a
third copy of chromosome twenty one. It is associated with physical growth delays, characteristic,
facial features, and intellectual disability. Down syndrome is one of the most common
chromosomes and abnormalities in humans. Those with Down syndromenearly always have
physical and intellectual disabilities. As adults their mental abilities are typically similar to an
eight or nine year old. They typically have poor immune function and generally reach
developmental milestones at a later age. They have an increased risk of a number of other health
problems, like congenital heart disease, epilepsy, Leukemia, thyroid disease and mental disorder.

The recovery process is life long and although there are some full functioning Down syndrome
patients there are others who require daily care and observation. Individuals with Down syndrome
can be identified by their features. Down syndrome has typical physical and mental characteristics,
but only seldom all of them or even most of them are found in one single person. If we study the
character of children with the syndrome, we will find they have a pleasant and convenient
temperament and a special character. They are friendly, sensitive and have a sharp and developed
emotional intelligence. These traits assist them in fitting in as a pat of society and the community
rather successfully. The discernible differences concerning the medical condition and the
developmental level between Down syndrome children are caused, among other things, by the
different medical treatments and the support of each child s environment. Support medical,

Magical Realism In The Movie Big Fish
Magical Realism Essay
Imagine a world where toys are alive, where superpowers are an average thing to have, a world
in which one can do whatever their imagination allows them too. In this sense, magical realism is
like a dream, in a dream anything can happen, and while one is dreaming, they feel as if it is all a
reality, as if they are actually living in these alternate versions of existence. This real world setting
is what separates magical realism from other fiction related genres. Though traces of magical
realism date back to the 1700 s, it was really only recognized as a genre in the twentieth century.
There are many fundamental elements that separate magical realism from other fictional stories.

For example, in the short story A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
the narrator describes an old man with huge buzzard wings which is said to be an angel with
powers to heal the sick (2). The townspeople see this magic as natural for the angels, due to the
sayings in the christian bible, so they are not surprised to see this angel with powers. As a matter
of fact, they even go as far to treat him badly because he is dirty, and Angels are depicted to be
clean and beautiful, as described in the bible. Also, in Anaya s book, a house in Agua Negra, a
small Ranch, is being cursed by the magic of witches. Tellez describes to the Marez Luna family
that there are stones rain[ing] from the skies! and describe as the work of Indian ghosts combined
with the magic of the Trementina sisters. The main characters, Antonio and Ultima, see this
incident as normal because they are used to dealing with witches and ghosts, but to the reader it is
an incredible thing that is never seen in the real world. That is the power of magical realism,

Extending High School
High school is like a spork: it s a crappy spoon and a crappy fork, so in the end it s just plain
useless. John Mayer Many people when asked will tell you that high school is pointless except for
being essential to gain higher education. No student will tell you that adding two years to their
already exhausting four years of high schoolis a good idea especially if the extra years are going to
be exactly like the rest of their high school experience. However if the extra two years are
constructed with brand new curriculum and help prepare students efficiently for what is to come in
college, then it could be very beneficial. It has become apparent that many students drop out of
college within their first year. My principals of business teacher, Mr. Eeg, has told me numerous
amounts of time that he has students who return from their dream colleges after just one year to
instead go to De Anza or Foothill because their college life was too hectic for them. They claim it
was too much reading, too much homework, and not enough of an actual life out of school and/or

This paper challenges the obsession with outcomes as part of the current preoccupation with
accountability. The paper recognizes and concurs with the importance of setting and trying to meet
clearly defined targets. But it argues that many crucial and equally important developments
inadvertently can be overlooked in the quest to quantify.
The word of the week is outcomes. The subtext is accountability. No one can deny that these two
imperatives are driving most agendas these days. Performance measurement for the private, public
and voluntary sectors is a booming business. Private firms, governments and voluntary
organizations are under pressure to demonstrate that they are functioning in a cost effective and
efficient manner.
The concern for accountability is being fuelled by many factors. The private sector always has
been interested in outcomes. The bottom line actual output at the end of the day is the primary
driving force. The private sector must account to its customers and shareholders. In fact, there is
growing discussion about the need to relate to an even broader audience of interested parties,
typically referred to as stakeholders.
The requirement to perform effectively and efficiently is nothing new. But the pressures appear to
have become all the more intense in a highly competitive

The Impact Of The Revenue Act Of 1932
On a day known as Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929, will always be a day the people of the
United States will always remember. The stock markets were increasing for a decade, when it had
plunged on Black Tuesday. Some people had lost everything, from the houses they owned or their
jobs to banks crashing, this became a depressing time, known as the Great Depression. At this time
Herbert Hoover was in control, and he thought that eventually everything would be back to
normal. When the crash of banks started in December of 1930, Hoover had hoped that this had
been the beginning of the Depression. Hoover knew that there needed to be a change, so he
drafted and submitted a bill to Congress, known as the Revenue Act of 1932. The purpose of the
act was to balance the federal budget and to maintain national credit. The act had raised the axes
on wealth, estate tax, and corporate taxes. The impact of this act had made a large middle class, it
raised the top income rate from 25% to 63%, and it made the Depression worse. However, the
Revenue Act of 1932 had... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

`` Darkness And Confusion `` By Ann Petry
Ann Petry s novella, In Darkness and Confusion, explicitly exhibits the ramifications of being a
poverty stricken African American in Harlem, New York via the conscious of the extremely
contemplative William Jones. In this short story, readers are allowed to experience William s
anxiety about residing in a slum ridden neighborhood, working at a barely paying job, and the
mental health of his deployed son. In journeying alongside William throughout the weekend,
sharing his past disappointments and disillusionments as well as his hopes and dreams, the
reader is able to discern his feelings of mass frustration. In walking in the shoes of William Jones,
it becomes evident how the entire Black community might be overwhelmed by circumstances
which indubitably inspired and provided rationale for an urban black rebellion. For far too long,
African Americans have been neglected the rights to decent and fair housing. In In Darkness and
Confusion, William Jones expresses his discontentment with the almost cruel living conditions of
the ghettos in Harlem as he stated, It ain t a fit place to live, though (Petry 261). William was
especially motivated to move to a better home to protect his wife, Pink s, ailing health. William
and Pink searched high and low for more decent places to live however, they simply could not
afford decent. Though marketed to those with lower than average incomes, the better housing for
blacks were still deficient and extremely pricy. In

A New Concept Of Foreign Affairs
The Industrial Revolution in Europe marked a turning point in history for the worse. Starting in the
19th century a new concept of foreign affairs was introduced to Asia and Africa: New Imperialism.
New Imperialism began in the 19th century when Europeans, mainly Great Britain, began
colonizing Asia and Africa. Europeans used military, political, and economic power to take over
weaker countries. Imperialism had an overall negative effect on the indigenous people of Asia and
Africa. Economic motives were a major cause of New Imperialism. By the late 1870 s countries
were industrializing rapidly. Great Britain began losing its economic lead and was faced with
competition in foreign markets. The seizing of Asian and African territories... Show more content on

The opium increase had a negative effect on China and their government. Individuals became
highly addicted and began trading silver to obtain opium which resulted in the Qing government
losing most their silver. Due to loss of silver, tax payments began rising. Tax payments became
hard for citizen to pay. With the intention of solving these issues, China banned all use of opium.
Britain demanded the creation of an independent British colony in China with unrestricted trade.
The British demands and Chinese resistance led to the Opium Wars. During the Opium Wars,
China was forced to give in to British demands. They were required to relinquish Hong Kong
forever, pay an indemnity of $100 million, and open four large cities to unlimited foreign trade.
China and Western powers continued to dispute over trade, leading to the second Opium War. The
second Opium War consisted of further loss of Chinese territory and forced the Chinese to accept
trade and investments with unfavorable term in several more cities. The British invasion of China
is a clear depiction of British imperialism negatively affecting the native inhabitants. The British
government used opium addiction and military force to disrupt Chinese seclusion for their own
benefits. Britain s goal was to gain access to China for foreign trade. In the process of doing that,
the stripped the Qing government of silver which raised taxes for citizens of China. Britain
disregarded Chinese laws and policies. Britain

Colonialism And Imperialism In Latin America
Throughout the first seven weeks of class, there were numerous readings on the effects of
colonization and imperialism. All the authors wrote about different points, using terms such as
formal and informal colonies, settler mortality rate, modernization and dependency theory, the
scramble for Africa, and more. They each have different arguments but all accurately mention the
strong after effects colonialismand imperialism have on formerly conquered states. These processes
are exploitative, hinder state growth, and create devastating and long term problems.
Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James Robinson explain the reasoning behind the different
types of colonies. They believe that there are two main types of colonies: settler and extractive. ...

Contrasted with formal empires, which have territories directly under control of the colonizer,
informal empires control countries indirectly by using their economies. A notable example of this
would be India during British imperialism. Before India was even a colony, it was controlled
through the British East India Company, which eventually did turn into direct colonization.
Informal empires are generated because many developing countries are forced to rely on a major
power in order to be economically stable. Another author, Walter Rodney, similarly agrees that this
system is unfair. His dependency theory, which counteracts Rostow s modernization theory, states
that many struggling countries will never get to fully develop because rich states will always find
a way to get richer, making poor states poorer. This unjust system is often the lingering effect of
imperialism and colonization because a formerly controlled country still relies on their mother

Richard Howard s Legacy
I never really knew my grandpa as well as I would have liked. He was already an old, old man by
the time I started high school, and my own memories of him are mostly of a man confined by

Edmund Howard was born into a poor household in Westhoughton, a dreary little coal mining

the town, his parents encouraged him to get a trade. And he did. He got an apprenticeship in

East India Company Case Study
East India Company was originally named The Governor and Company of Merchants of London
trading into East Indies . It was incorporated in Britain on the 31st December 1600, by a charter of
Queen Elizabeth which settled its constitution, powers and privileges. It obtained a royal charter
from Queen Elizabeth I, granting it monopoly at the trade with the East. A joint stockcompany,
shares primarily owned by British Merchants and aristocrats, the East India Company had no direct
link to the British government. The Queen though had sovereign power over this polity. If the state
of Britain was considered a polity, then East India Company, a corporationin modern sense of the

then the different shareholder groups were conceived as citizens of this polity called East India

Furthermore, this corporation would be an extension of the sovereign which was the state of
Britain and the British monarch herself. The authority of Queen Elizabeth is established in the

COMMUNICATION IN KENYA

1.0Introduction
Effective communication between teacher and pupil is a requisite factor for educational attainment.
For the deaf, ineffective communication is a major problem especially when onset of profound
deafness takes places at an early age before language is acquired. At school, the language of
classroom communication not only affects the child s development but also influences ability to
learn other curriculum contents. Pointing out reasons for failure by deaf children to compete
favorably with their hearing peers, Johnson et al (1989) has indicated that the central problem on
deaf education is embedded in the lack of an appropriate language of classroom communication.
For a long time education for the deaf was conducted through the oral approach. It was later realized
that this oral approach did not avail curriculum content to the deaf learners. In the 1980 s Total
Communication arose as one of the solutions. According to Adoyo(2004), Total Communication
was misunderstood for Simultaneous Communication, a communication system in which speech
and sign are produced at the same time (Lane, Hoffmister Bahan, 1996). Although SC has been
used in Kenya for all these years, it has not produced the predicated large scale improvement.

Shelter Vs Animal Shelter
How much would you like to know about your dog? What breed is it? Where did it come from?
How was it treated? Has it been abused? How old is it? When s it s birthday? Does it have any
health problems? All of the above are answers you man never really know if you get a dog from a
shelter, whereas dogbreeders are more reliable. A dog from a shelter can have a lot of medical
problems and you never know what you are getting, whereas a breeder will usually have a
guarantee of health.
About 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those,
3.3 million are dogs. Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized, 670,000
are dogs. Approximately 1.6 million dogs are adopted every year. About 710,000 animals who
enter the shelters as strays are returned to their owners, of those 620,000 are dogs.
If you adopt a dog, you are saving a dog s life and giving it a forever loving home. Each year, 2.7

Forensic Examination Of Forensic Science
Forensic science is defined as science that pertains to law. Forensic science is used during
investigations of a crime scene. Many forensic techniques are used during the investigation of
crime scenes. These techniques are applied to what is considered to be trace evidence. Trace
evidence is evidence left at the scene of the crime that helps tell the story of what had happened
and could possibly lead to a suspect. The reliability of forensic evidence testing is a widely debated
topic in the world of forensic science. The new Gold standard in evidence is DNAanalysis, because
of its reliability. Finger printing as well as ballistics are often used but are said to be imperfect
compared to DNA analysis. DNA analysis is deemed the most reliable because it has faced rigorous
scientific experimentation.
Fingerprinting is one of the oldest tool of forensic analysis. Fingerprinting is done by dusting a
latent print with aluminum flakes. This print is then photographed and picked up by clear adhesive
tape. This is where some of the controversy comes in. Fingerprint powders can contaminate the
prints and ruin the opportunity to perform other techniques that could result in more information.
Another problem that arises in the courtroom with fingerprinting is how is it determined that
someone has touched that exact object and how are fingerprint collected by the crime scene
investigator. Simon A. Cole, a Professor of Criminology, Law and Society at Cornell University,

Native Americans have the highest rates of obesity and diabetes in the United States. According

be obese and are over twice as likely to have diabetes than the general population. These numbers
are even higher for Southwest Native Americans. But their diet is very similar to the rest of
modern society. So why do Native Americans suffer these conditions at higher rates than the general
population? The answer may be found in new research that is beginning to point to a genetic cause
for these conditions. In a study by Peggy Halpern, Ph.D. for the U.S. Department of Health and

We know the ancestors of all Native Americans came from Asia. We know this to be a fact because
DNA analysis of Native Americans, including Native Americans of the southwestern United States,
shows a direct link to people living in northeast Asia today. According to Jake Page, former editor of
both Natural History and Smithsonian magazines: ...geneticists have found...DNA lineages present
in native populations...which...are found only in Asians... . Linguistic and dentition analysis also
demonstrate Native Americans descended from peoples living in Asia. Today, almost no one
debates the premise that the ancestors of Native Americans came from Asia. There is also very
little debate as to how these first Asians arrived in North America. Because so much of the world s
water was locked up in glaciers during the last ice age, sea level was lower than it is today.
According to David Meltzer, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University

lowered oceans exposed the shallow continental shelf beneath the Bering and Chukchi Seas. This
shelf...connected Alaska and Siberia...and it trafficked...in plants, animals, and people.

Soybean Hydroponics in the Arctic Tundra
Soybean Hydroponics in the Arctic Tundra
Abstract: Soybeans will be grown hydroponically in the arctic tundra. Greenhouses will be used
to extend the possible growing season. Soybeans can serve two good purposes. They can be
used as food or as a way to make biofuel. This is great for the arctic environment where it is
difficult to get supplies such as food and gasoline. With a steady supply of food and fuel more
research can be done in this harsh environment. The goals are to produce the highest output of
soybeans possible hydroponically and to convert what is not wanted for food into biofuel. Another
goal is to show that hydroponics can be used on a commercial level and hopefully get more
companies to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the United States biofuel production has grown a lot over the last two decades. In 1995
production was at 500,000 gallons, by 2005 it was 75 million gallons, and by 2006 it was at 224
million gallons [Biofuels 13]. The main plant used in the United States biofuel production was
the soybean [Biofuels 13]. Currently 4 percent of the world s demand for primary energy comes
from biofuels. The more popular and more well known hydropower only provides 2 percent of
the world s primary energy demand [Maugeri 10]. Most modern cars can use up to a 10 percent
biofuel mix in their engines without any modifications, though some cars called flex fuel can use
100 percent biofuel or gasoline [Maugeri 10]. One big advantage to using biofuel is that it
produces a higher octane rating than gasoline which helps improve engine performance [Maugeri
10]. Biofuels currently cost a little more to make compared to gasoline at about a ten to eight ratio
respectively [Sanders 10]. Hopefully with more farms producing the components for making
biofuels hydroponically it can help drive the price down to where it can be competitive with
gasoline and one day completely replace it.
Methodology: Since the soybeans are going to be grown in the arctic tundra a greenhouse will be
used to extend the growing season which is typically 10 12 weeks to much longer. Soybeans grow
best at somewhere between 60 86 degrees Fahrenheit [Jones 05]. Grow lights will be used in the
greenhouse when there is

Voice Deviations
1.List 3 reasons that voice deviations tend to be of less concern within the general population
than other communication problems such as stuttering and articulation disorders? (1.5 points)
There are many reason why voice deviations tend to be of less concern within the general
population than other communication problem. The first reason is because everyone has
different characteristics of what a normal voice is. The second reason is because when
individuals has a unique voice, it difficult to decide if it is their voice or a voice disorder. The third
reason is because voice deviations also occur because based on demographics it is difficult to
determine if it is based on gender, age, and where an individual is from. 2.State the difference(s)

This test is more objective. The ratings are mild, moderate and severe. For this test, the clinician
uses a ridged endoscope, one. DME is the Direct Magnitude Estimation, which is perceptual and
subjective test. It is scored out of 100. 7.What are two disadvantages of this type of subjective
perceptual rating? (1 point) The first disadvantage is that everyone perceives voices and voice
problems differently. I may think an individual has breathy voice, but another individual may
hear more of a strain. When things are subjective, opinions vary. Another disadvantage is there
are a lot of of other signs and symptoms that can make up a voice disorder that are not always
included in a subjective perceptual rating. 8.Briefly describe the aspect(s) of voice that led to
your ratings in the table above (2 points) After listening to this individual s voice, one could infer
that this individual has an overall severe voice problem. I determined this because of voices I
have heard on a daily basis. This individual s voice seemed very rough and there was a lot of
strain. This individual s sounded exhausted and forced when they tried to produce

The Outsiders By Susan Eloise Hinton
Reading a variety of novels throughout my educational career has been an essential portion of my
life furthermore; I believe the Irvine Unified School District should teach the novel The Outsiders
by Susan Eloise Hinton. This novel has many themes and morals that fit perfectly with it, but the
main one is to show how our society segregates people based on their looks and appearance. I
believe this novelis suitable for young adults between the ages of twelve and sixteen because this
novel gives them an insight to the contemporary segregation issues that they face in life. During
this age group many kids get judged based on their looks and style. I would teach the themes and
ideas to the kids in a way that they would be able to understand... Show more content on

After their conversation, they come to the conclusion that they share passions that can fill the
gap between rich and poor. The main of theme of the over all book is first introduced in Chapter
1, and escalates throughout the novel. The conflict between the groups Socs and Greasers also
comes into play. The Greasers are described as poorer than the Socs and the middle class...
almost like hoods; we steal things and rive old souped up cars and hold up gas stations and have
a gang fight once in a while. ( The Outsiders Pg: )Meanwhile the Socs are described as the jet set,
the West side rich kids, who jump greasers and wreck houses and throw beer blasts for kicks, and
get editorials in the paper for being a public disgrace one day and an asset to society the next. (
The Outsiders Pg: )The way the two different groups are described in the first chapter shows how
they see each other so differently. The greasers believe that the Soc s lives are, so much betters
than theirs, but in reality it isn t. This part of the chapter teaches students how images aren t always
what they seem. Many people may look like their rich, but in reality they aren t. This part of the
novel, supports the over all theme of the novel. In Chapter 3, another conversation is brought into
play. In this Chapter the conversation between Ponyboy and

The South China Sea Essay
Since the 3rd Century AD, the South China Sea has been home to countless territorial disputes
between China, the Philippines, Vietnam, and other East Asian Nations. This region is so
contentious because it is one of the busiest trade routes, and is home to vast natural resources.
Because of the long and dense history of them, these disputes are some of the most difficult events
to understand and interpret in international relations. Because the disputes deal with relative power,
and the security dilemma, looking at the events through a realist lens is the most practical way of
analyzing them.
Although there have been small disputes dating back to the 3rd Century, conflict in the South China
Sea really started to heat up in the early 1900 s. In the 19th Century, France had been heavily
involved in the South China Sea because they had colonized French Indochina (present day
Vietnam). However France was more concerned about control of the Gulf of Tonkin than the
entire South China Sea. The early disputes were primarily over the Paracel Islands, a group of
islands somewhat in between China and Vietnam. In 1902 (Serverino, 2010, p.76), China ordered
the first official exploration of the islands preemptively because they were worried the the French
might try to claim the islands as part of Indochina s territory. Then in the 1920 s, both Japan and
France claimed to own the Paracel s. It was around this time that China said the Paracel s were the
southernmost part of its territory.

The First Six Lessons And William Shakespeare s As You...
Theatre stage conventions are used to heighten and convey a story s narrative in the Greek,
Medieval and Elizabethan Eras of theatre. Each era built on the foundations of Greek theatre
staging, through all of this are a perspective of modern Theatre was born. In order to understand a
play, one must detail the conventions associated with the production. One must ask themselves if
the play a presentational or representational piece? In this paper, I will be comparing staging
conventions through Antigone, Acting: The First Six Lessons and William Shakespeares As You
Like It. Antigone is a battle between opposition, while As You Like It is a tongue and cheek
melodrama. Acting: The First six Lessons stands out for its depiction of parental nurturing and
teaching. It is a play devoted to the theme of teaching rather than it is characters or spectacle. Its
conventions follow suite in this ambition. First off, important to note that the functions of theatre
conventions set the rules and parameters of the world the actors happen to embody.
In Acting : The First Six Lessons, Actorwho is known as Teacher in this scene in introducing the
Actress who is portraying the creature.

  • 2. The Big Two Beloved River By Ernest Hemingway Naturalism is an extension to realism that is often much harsher and more unforgiving. There are many criterion that determine whether a text falls under the category of naturalism. Ernest Hemingway s mastery of the naturalistic style is evident in his many works as he expertly applies the many different elements. It is clear that his work falls under the naturalist genre through looking specifically at his short story The Big Two Hearted River . Though Naturalismis a big part of Hemingway s writing, one would be remiss to simply stop their analysis on the naturalistic elements of the story. The Big Two Hearted River goes against the traditional naturalist element of determinism through the use of the main character s search for recovery... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Objectivism is a technique used where the author excludes most, if not all, of the character s past and identity so that the character becomes a simple observer. In The Big Two Hearted River , the reader knows very little about the character Nick in order to focus more on the plot and what happens to the character, rather than the character themselves (Zhang 2.2). The objectivism of Nick in the story goes a step further. Hemingway s focus on the characters actions demonstrates how Nick s technique allows him to move beyond the deterministic world to create his own purpose. Hemingway only includes information about Nick to help the reader understand what he is trying to achieve. Nick took him by the head and held him while he threaded the slim hook under his chin, down through his thorax and into the last segments of his abdomen. The grasshopper took hold of the hook with his front feet, spitting tobacco juice on it. Nick dropped him into the water (Hemingway 191). Much of the story is a series of descriptions of Nicks actions much like the example given above. There is not much focus on the characters thoughts or feelings. Nick s actions are the most important part of the story because they align themselves with his purpose; to systematically and ceremonially kill, out of necessity rather than for no reason. Nick reconnects with nature throughout the text, but instead of nature having control over the consequences of his actions, he is the one who controls the outcome. This goes against the traditional naturalistic style where characters hopelessly battle against nature and no matter what they do cannot achieve their goal because nature is stronger and determines the outcome of their actions. Nick s appearance, age or health have very little to do with the Hemingway s idea of how to become more masculine , for him men must first use proper technique in order to create meaning ... • 3. The Difference Between Old, Old And New Imperialism Imperialism which is defined as the extension of a country s power and influence through colonisation, use of military force, or other similar means occurred in history during two different time periods. The first bout of imperialism which is often referred to as old imperialism occurred between 1492 and 1800 while the new imperialismtranspired between 1870 and 1914 (Scammell, 2004). Although the two movements had some similarities, there were several differences starting with the motivation behind each wave of imperialism and extending to the economic, ideological, and political differences (Bush, 2006). Those differences are the reasons why the two waves of imperialism are often classified as Old and New . This essay will be briefly... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... New imperialism was motivated by the increased production demands created as a result of the industrial revolution, technological developments in communication and transportation and the wave of extreme nationalism (Seton Watson, 1961). During that time period, the acquisition of new territories was encouraged as a means of expanding profit by investing capital in the various territories (Seton Watson, 1961). In order to meet the constantly growing demands brought on by the industrial revolution, imperialist countries sought to expand their territories even further (Seton Watson, 1961). One major benefit of the expansion was an increase in amount of raw materials available. Another benefit of acquiring territories included cheap labour which was a necessity due to the expanding industries (Seton Watson, 1961). Economic growth was another benefit of territorial expansion as there were more markets to trade with. This second wave of imperialism encouraged imperialist countries to take political control of their colonies (Seton Watson, 1961). They created new governments that would also benefit them economically as the local leaders would no longer have to be paid for their provision of raw materials like they were under the cash and carry system implemented during the first wave of imperialism. Western imperialist nations believed that they were far more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Relationship Between Parents And Children According to Confucius, for a society to exist in peace and harmony, five great fundamental relationships have to be respected. These relationships are of father and son, ruler and subject, husband and wife, elder and younger and lastly but not least, parents and children. There were appropriate attitudes or the Yi that people were expected to adopt. For instance, fathers were advised to be kind to their sons and in return, the sons were supposed to be obedient and dutiful to their fathers. Likewise, rulers were expected to be kind and generous to their subjects while subjects were supposed to show total loyalty to their rulers. In marriage, a wife was expected to be obedient and submissive to his husband while the husband was supposed to love and be good to his wife. Elders, whether brothers or friends, were to be considerate towards their juniors, who in turn showed respect towards their elders. The most important relationship in which almost the Chinese culture is based on is the relationship between parents and children. Confucius believed that a smoothly functioning family; made up of respectful children to parents, ancestors and relatives were a model for the Chinese society as a whole. In effect, the nation was like a gigantic family. Just as the son was expected to be loyal to his father, so a citizen was expected to be loyal to the emperor. If the families were in harmony, society and government would also function properly. For Confucius, they believed that man ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Women Fat Research Paper Fats in the human body are stored in cells known as adipocytes. Adipocytes, also known as lipocytes and fat cells, are the cells that primarily compose adipose tissue, specialized in storing energy as fat. Fat can also be stored as droplets in skeletal muscle cells that hold about 2,000 3,000 kilocalories. Some fat even flows freely through the blood in a human body. Fat is one of the three macronutrients. Macronutrients are substance required in large quantities in a living organism. Other than fat, proteins and carbohydrates are macronutrients. Women can carry more fat than women. The fat in a woman represents around 18% 20% of her body weight. The fat in a man only represents about 10% 15% of his body weight. There is one main reason for this. That reason being... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women also often metabolize fat faster than men. Women are also better at burning fat in exercise than men, making it easier for them to lose the fat that they gain. During exercise, women exhibit less respiratory exchange ratios than men. Women make more triglycerides, which is an ester derived from glycerol and fatty acids, than men do. This means that the fat is being taken up into the adipose tissue at a higher rate in women than men. Also, even if women generally burn fat simpler, they are more have a higher overall obesity rate compared to men. 25 percent of adult women in the United States are obese and 20 percent of adult men are obese in the United States. • 8. Dichotomy In Rear Window Alfred Hitchcock once defined his film Rear Window (Hitchcock, 1954), as the story of a man who cannot move and looks through a window, about what he sees and how he reacts to it (Truffaut, 1986). In addition, Hitchcock constructs the character of the protagonist of the film, Jeff (James Steward), not only by using cinematographic devices to show how Jeff interprets what he sees and his own life, but also stabilising a dichotomy between what he looks at and what he lives. At the beginning of the film, a camera movement reveals JeffВґs profession and why he is immobilized in a wheel chair. He is a photographer, interested in looking at otherВґs lives; consequently, he could be described as a voyeur. Across a very limited space the courtyard... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lisa as Thorvald at the end, represents a menace and when he feels threatened, does not hesitate to take his binoculars (or even the flash), as the only way to prevent danger. To sum up, Hitchcock uses a film as Rear window to construct an allegory between reality and fiction. The end of the film is ambiguous because although Jeff chooses real life, as he presents his back to the window and to the outside, the clash between reality and fiction has a price, if you choose fiction probably, you could lose to live in a real society, but if you choose reality, you could lose your identity, as Jeff. So, inside this film, there is not only one crime, but also other metaphoric murdered: Jeff, who has renounced to his fantasies to adapt himself in a conformed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Colonialism, By Lois Tyson Essay Colonialism, the hunger to expand and conquer causes the world, becomes an endless arena for the fight for dominance and inevitable discrimination that follows. Even once colonization ends, the natives are not immediately free because of the aftermath that remains in the dust colonization leaves behind. One inevitable result of colonization is the establishment of social hierarchy that continues into postcolonial society. In Using Colonialism/ Postcolonialism Critical Theory, Lois Tyson eloquently explains the consequences of colonialism and the different facets of Postcolonialism. First, in a colonial social hierarchy, unquestionably, the members of the colonizing culture occupy the top rungs of the ladder (Tyson 248 9). Meanwhile, those who occupy the bottom rungs of the colonialist social ladder whether their inferior status is based on race... or any other cultural factor are called subalterns, who are then othered by the colonized, who believe their dominance and authority is validation for their discrimination (Tyson 249). Through othering, the savage is... therefore, not considered fully human (Tyson 248). This mindset does not belong purely to the colonists, but applies to the colonized as well. To elaborate, Tyson uses the term colonized consciousness to describe subalterns who internalize... the colonialist belief that those different from a society s dominant culture are inferior (Tyson 249). The goal of this assessment is to analyze the strengths and weaknesses with the financial ratio analysis of the company along with conducting an internal factor evaluation matrix to view the status of the company in comparison with their top competitor, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Top strengths that Carnival Corporation plc has to their advantage would be their strong brand and major control of the market share. Containing a strong brand portfolio with a total of 10 well known brands operating about 102 ships. The company is also the largest cruise company in the world in terms of cruise passengers with a market share of about 47% followed by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd with a market share of 23% (Cederholm, 2015). Example of weaknesses that Carnival Corporation plc has is their safety record. In early 2012, the Costa Concordia struck off the coast of Isola del Giglio, Italy. In 2013, Carnival Cruise Line s Triumph reported a fire, which left the ship adrift in the Gulf of Mexico (Carnival Corporation plc SWOT Analysis, 2016). Debt and Equity Valuation This valuation of NABR was based on equity and debt resulting in the financial value of the firm, and connects with the value of the firm s asset. By using the DCF method, the total fair market value of the business entity is calculated by discounting future projected cash flows back to the date of valuation. At the end of the projection period, a residual or terminal value is calculated and discounted to its present value at the date of the valuation. The theory behind the discounted cash flow method is that an entity s value is equal to its present value of its expected future cash flow. This method is considered the most detailed analysis because it is thorough in nature and aids the owner to get a true picture of the firm value. This consists of certain steps which involve developing a method to be used to project future earnings of cash flow, a risk adjusted discount rate, discounting the projected cash flow to the date of the valuation, and capitalizing the terminal year s projection into a residual value using the discount rate less the growth rate. In this case, we estimated the growth rate of 2.3%, and the summation of the present values of the discounted cash flows and terminal value. This method is the most precise method in comparison to the Venture Capitalist method despite the notion that there is an uncertainty of cash flow projections. Using WACC to calculate the discount rate assisted in the calculation of the

In recent discussions of liberal arts degrees, a controversial issue has been whether they are worth getting rather than a vocational degree. On one hand, some argue that getting a liberal arts degree is a waste of money and there are very limited jobs out there that a liberal arts degree could be used for. On the other hand, however, others argue that in order to be a well rounded person and to be more interesting, a student should work towards a liberal arts degree. According to this view, even though there is not one specific job that the individual will be trained for while obtaining a liberal arts education, he or she will be feeding their brain and giving himself or herself a chance to develop better knowledge of subjects in social sciences, literature, and mathematics. In sum, then, the issue is whether getting a liberal arts education is worth it or not. He uses different stories and studies to explain what makes a person who there are. For example, in chapter one Gladwell says that successful hockey players if born early in the calendar year this will make them stand out physically among other boys who are several months younger than they are. Gladwell says that over time, the opportunities that these players have has help them build up to make them better players. So, Gladwell uses a sociological perspective to try to explain the reasons for people s success. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we look at outliers, when we look at success stories, if we look closely enough, we see lives with opportunity from the start. To illustrate the importance of culture in success, Gladwell relates a story of a Colombian pilot who most likely crashed a plane because, even with diminishing fuel, he wasn t assertive enough to stand up to the intimidating control tower agents and demand to land. Cultures that encourage passive submission to hierarchy, or who phrase their questions in subtle, vague euphemisms, may find themselves at a disadvantage in some situations, such as the airplane cockpit. Other times, your culture works for you. For example, Gladwell explains that Asians who spent centuries working in rice paddies, a type of farming that requires meticulous care all year long, passed on this work ethic to their posterity. Many of the inheritors of the rice paddy culture apply the same diligence in their schoolwork. This diligence, of course, brings more success. I found this book to be an eye opener to many things that I never really paid attitude to. We all want to believe that where we come from and who we are does not affect what we will be come. This real world setting is what separates magical realism from other fiction related genres. John Mayer Many people when asked will tell you that high school is pointless except for being essential to gain higher education. No student will tell you that adding two years to their already exhausting four years of high schoolis a good idea especially if the extra years are going to be exactly like the rest of their high school experience. However if the extra two years are constructed with brand new curriculum and help prepare students efficiently for what is to come in college, then it could be very beneficial. It has become apparent that many students drop out of college within their first year. My principals of business teacher, Mr. Eeg, has told me numerous amounts of time that he has students who return from their dream colleges after just one year to instead go to De Anza or Foothill because their college life was too hectic for them. At this time Herbert Hoover was in control, and he thought that eventually everything would be back to normal. Hoover knew that there needed to be a change, so he drafted and submitted a bill to Congress, known as the Revenue Act of 1932. In journeying alongside William throughout the weekend, sharing his past disappointments and disillusionments as well as his hopes and dreams, the reader is able to discern his feelings of mass frustration. In walking in the shoes of William Jones, it becomes evident how the entire Black community might be overwhelmed by circumstances which indubitably inspired and provided rationale for an urban black rebellion. For far too long, African Americans have been neglected the rights to decent and fair housing. In In Darkness and Confusion, William Jones expresses his discontentment with the almost cruel living conditions of the ghettos in Harlem as he stated, It ain t a fit place to live, though (Petry 261). William was especially motivated to move to a better home to protect his wife, Pink s, ailing health. Informal empires are generated because many developing countries are forced to rely on a major power in order to be economically stable. Another author, Walter Rodney, similarly agrees that this system is unfair. His dependency theory, which counteracts Rostow s modernization theory, states that many struggling countries will never get to fully develop because rich states will always find a way to get richer, making poor states poorer. A Short Note On Speech Sign Semantic Equivalence Essay ANALYSIS OF SPEECH SIGN SEMANTIC EQUIVALENCE IN SIMULTANEAOUS COMMUNICATION IN KENYA By Adoyo Peter Oracha Department of special needs education, Maseno University, P.O Box 333, Maseno Kenya. 1.0Introduction Effective communication between teacher and pupil is a requisite factor for educational attainment. For the deaf, ineffective communication is a major problem especially when onset of profound deafness takes places at an early age before language is acquired. At school, the language of classroom communication not only affects the child s development but also influences ability to learn other curriculum contents. Pointing out reasons for failure by deaf children to compete favorably with their hearing peers, Johnson et al (1989) has indicated that the central problem on deaf education is embedded in the lack of an appropriate language of classroom communication. For a long time education for the deaf was conducted through the oral approach. It was later realized that this oral approach did not avail curriculum content to the deaf learners. In the 1980 s Total Communication arose as one of the solutions. According to Adoyo(2004), Total Communication was misunderstood for Simultaneous Communication, a communication system in which speech and sign are produced at the same time (Lane, Hoffmister Bahan, 1996). Many forensic techniques are used during the investigation of crime scenes. These techniques are applied to what is considered to be trace evidence. Trace evidence is evidence left at the scene of the crime that helps tell the story of what had happened and could possibly lead to a suspect. The reliability of forensic evidence testing is a widely debated topic in the world of forensic science. The new Gold standard in evidence is DNAanalysis, because of its reliability. Finger printing as well as ballistics are often used but are said to be imperfect compared to DNA analysis. DNA analysis is deemed the most reliable because it has faced rigorous scientific experimentation. Fingerprinting is one of the oldest tool of forensic analysis. Fingerprinting is done by dusting a latent print with aluminum flakes. This print is then photographed and picked up by clear adhesive tape. This is where some of the controversy comes in. Fingerprint powders can contaminate the prints and ruin the opportunity to perform other techniques that could result in more information. This shelf...connected Alaska and Siberia...and it trafficked...in plants, animals, and people. There is, however, much debate as to when the first Asian peoples migrated to North America. • 41. Soybean Hydroponics in the Arctic Tundra Soybean Hydroponics in the Arctic Tundra Abstract: Soybeans will be grown hydroponically in the arctic tundra. Greenhouses will be used to extend the possible growing season. Soybeans can serve two good purposes. They can be used as food or as a way to make biofuel. This is great for the arctic environment where it is difficult to get supplies such as food and gasoline. With a steady supply of food and fuel more research can be done in this harsh environment. The goals are to produce the highest output of soybeans possible hydroponically and to convert what is not wanted for food into biofuel. Another goal is to show that hydroponics can be used on a commercial level and hopefully get more companies to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the United States biofuel production has grown a lot over the last two decades. In 1995 production was at 500,000 gallons, by 2005 it was 75 million gallons, and by 2006 it was at 224 million gallons [Biofuels 13]. The main plant used in the United States biofuel production was the soybean [Biofuels 13]. Currently 4 percent of the world s demand for primary energy comes from biofuels. The more popular and more well known hydropower only provides 2 percent of the world s primary energy demand [Maugeri 10]. Most modern cars can use up to a 10 percent biofuel mix in their engines without any modifications, though some cars called flex fuel can use 100 percent biofuel or gasoline [Maugeri 10]. One big advantage to using biofuel is that it produces a higher octane rating than gasoline which helps improve engine performance [Maugeri 10]. Biofuels currently cost a little more to make compared to gasoline at about a ten to eight ratio respectively [Sanders 10]. Hopefully with more farms producing the components for making biofuels hydroponically it can help drive the price down to where it can be competitive with gasoline and one day completely replace it. Methodology: Since the soybeans are going to be grown in the arctic tundra a greenhouse will be used to extend the growing season which is typically 10 12 weeks to much longer. Soybeans grow best at somewhere between 60 86 degrees Fahrenheit [Jones 05]. Grow lights will be used in the greenhouse when there is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Voice Deviations 1.List 3 reasons that voice deviations tend to be of less concern within the general population than other communication problems such as stuttering and articulation disorders? (1.5 points) There are many reason why voice deviations tend to be of less concern within the general population than other communication problem. The first reason is because everyone has different characteristics of what a normal voice is. The second reason is because when individuals has a unique voice, it difficult to decide if it is their voice or a voice disorder. The third reason is because voice deviations also occur because based on demographics it is difficult to determine if it is based on gender, age, and where an individual is from. 2.State the difference(s) between a... DME is the Direct Magnitude Estimation, which is perceptual and subjective test. It is scored out of 100. 7.What are two disadvantages of this type of subjective perceptual rating? (1 point) The first disadvantage is that everyone perceives voices and voice problems differently. I may think an individual has breathy voice, but another individual may hear more of a strain. When things are subjective, opinions vary. Another disadvantage is there are a lot of of other signs and symptoms that can make up a voice disorder that are not always included in a subjective perceptual rating. 8.Briefly describe the aspect(s) of voice that led to your ratings in the table above (2 points) After listening to this individual s voice, one could infer that this individual has an overall severe voice problem. The Outsiders By Susan Eloise Hinton Reading a variety of novels throughout my educational career has been an essential portion of my life furthermore; I believe the Irvine Unified School District should teach the novel The Outsiders by Susan Eloise Hinton. This novel has many themes and morals that fit perfectly with it, but the main one is to show how our society segregates people based on their looks and appearance. I believe this novelis suitable for young adults between the ages of twelve and sixteen because this novel gives them an insight to the contemporary segregation issues that they face in life. During this age group many kids get judged based on their looks and style. I would teach the themes and ideas to the kids in a way that they would be able to understand... The main of theme of the over all book is first introduced in Chapter 1, and escalates throughout the novel. The conflict between the groups Socs and Greasers also comes into play. The Greasers are described as poorer than the Socs and the middle class... almost like hoods; we steal things and rive old souped up cars and hold up gas stations and have a gang fight once in a while. ( The Outsiders Pg: )Meanwhile the Socs are described as the jet set, the West side rich kids, who jump greasers and wreck houses and throw beer blasts for kicks, and get editorials in the paper for being a public disgrace one day and an asset to society the next. ( The Outsiders Pg: )The way the two different groups are described in the first chapter shows how they see each other so differently. • 45. The South China Sea Essay Since the 3rd Century AD, the South China Sea has been home to countless territorial disputes between China, the Philippines, Vietnam, and other East Asian Nations. This region is so contentious because it is one of the busiest trade routes, and is home to vast natural resources. Because of the long and dense history of them, these disputes are some of the most difficult events to understand and interpret in international relations. Because the disputes deal with relative power, and the security dilemma, looking at the events through a realist lens is the most practical way of analyzing them. Although there have been small disputes dating back to the 3rd Century, conflict in the South China Sea really started to heat up in the early 1900 s. In the 19th Century, France had been heavily involved in the South China Sea because they had colonized French Indochina (present day Vietnam). However France was more concerned about control of the Gulf of Tonkin than the entire South China Sea. The early disputes were primarily over the Paracel Islands, a group of islands somewhat in between China and Vietnam. In 1902 (Serverino, 2010, p.76), China ordered the first official exploration of the islands preemptively because they were worried the the French might try to claim the islands as part of Indochina s territory. Then in the 1920 s, both Japan and France claimed to own the Paracel s. It was around this time that China said the Paracel s were the southernmost part of its territory. ...
