Introduction to Earth Systems, with english as a second language, used at my International School. Includes Atmosphere, Geosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere as well as Constructive and Destructive Forces.
4. THE SEARCH FOR SYSTEMS!
In teams of 4, please find:
1. Atmosphere 2. Geosphere
3. Hydrosphere 4. Biosphere
5. Constructive Forces 6. Destructive Forces
5. ENERGY
The ability to do Work
Work is the force used to move an object.
Two main sources of Energy for Earth
1. The Sun (external)
2. The Core (internal)
6.
7. ATMOSPHERE
Earth’s outermost layer (relatively thin).
Reason for different climates in the world
Mixture of nitrogen & oxygen.
Cloud droplets and water vapor.
Contains dust particles.
8. GEOSPHERE
Most of Earth’s mass.
Solid rocks and metals.
3 main parts
1. Crust
2. Mantle
3. Core
9. HYDROSPHERE
Contains all of Earths water.
71% of Earth is covered in water.
Lots of different forms:
Oceans.
Glaciers.
Rivers.
Lakes.
Groundwater.
Water vapour.
Only a very small amount is drinking water, most is salt (96.5%)!
10. BIOSPHERE
Parts of Earth that contain living organisms.
Interacts with the other three spheres.
11.
12.
13. FEEDBACK
A system returns information about a change in a system.
Changes in one system could affect another system.
If plants die, no more food for animals!
If we lose a lot of water, all the fish will have very little space to
swim!
A melting glacier, increases water and makes us have less land,
more water vapour in the air therefore more rain and flooding!
Feedback can:
Increase or slow down the effects of change.
14. YOU’RE A QUIZARD HARRY!
What is Earth’s INTERNAL Energy Source?
Core
What is Earth’s EXTERNAL Energy Source?
Sun
Why is the Sun’s heat important to Earth?
It makes it warm enough for people to live on Earth.
Why is sunlight important for Earth?
Plants and other things use sunlight to make food.
15. What other things does the Sun do?
Seasons.
What are the three parts of the Geosphere?
Crust, Mantle & Core.
What makes the Core different from the Crust and the Mantle?
Made of Metal.
What metal?
Iron & Nickel.
16. Which sphere is water based?
Hydrosphere
Which sphere is ground based?
Geosphere
Which sphere is air based?
Atmosphere
Which sphere has all three?
Biosphere
18. DESTRUCTIVE FORCES
Destroy & wear away landmasses through Erosion & Weathering.
Erosion –The slow destruction of something, rock is picked up
and moved to other places.
Weathering – Rock is broken down into smaller & smaller pieces.
Destroyed by 4 Forces:
1. Gravity 2.Water
3.Wind 4. Ice
19.
20. QUIZZIE MAGUIRE
Why don’t mountains keep getting higher and higher?
Destructive forces like wind and erosion from rain stop it from
happening.
How is wind destructive?
Wind carries sand, this erodes rocks, it picks up pieces of rock
and carries them away.
Can humans be destructive?
Yes, we break rocks, put them in different places, building roads,
buildings, cities etc.
