Nuclear Energy: The Future Of Electricitysanpaku2003
Population growth is expected to increase energy demand significantly in the coming decades. Nuclear energy is a promising alternative to fossil fuels as it produces no greenhouse gases or air pollution and has relatively low costs per kilowatt hour compared to other energy sources. While safety is a concern, modern nuclear plants have stringent regulations and automated safety systems, as well as extensively trained personnel, making them among the safest industrial facilities in the world. The document argues that nuclear power may be the only viable clean and inexpensive solution to meet growing global energy needs.
Carbon capture and storage technology promises to deliver fossil energy without carbon dioxide emissions. It can capture and permanently store carbon emissions from power plants and other concentrated sources of CO2, which may be critical for lowering carbon in the energy system. Several large-scale demonstration projects are now under construction or operating in the US, Canada, Europe, and China. The webinar will discuss the promise of CCS technology, what is needed to reduce costs, and examine ongoing large-scale demonstrations.
Wind energy currently generates enough power for around 1 million Australian households. A modern wind turbine is capable of powering up to 10,000 homes. Wind farms invest billions in the Australian economy and support thousands of jobs. Community support for wind farms is strong, with nearly 80% of those surveyed supporting wind farm development. Multiple studies have found no direct health impacts from wind turbines.
Hydropower generates electricity from moving water using generators and is one of the oldest and most efficient forms of energy production, contributing 24% of the world's electricity. It is a renewable source that produces the most electricity in the United States, providing power for over 1 billion people worldwide and 35 million households in the US. While hydropower is renewable and does not produce air pollution, it requires dams that can disrupt river ecosystems.

It analyzes how current energy policy focused on gas, nuclear and renewables may not be enough to meet the projected demand of 720TWh/yr by 2050 as electricity replaces transport and heating. All forms of renewables, including tidal range, tidal stream, wave and offshore wind projects in the Severn Estuary could provide up to 20GW of power but projects face challenges of governance, planning, timeframes and market appetite. The conclusion calls for a proactive, diverse development plan covering multiple technologies in the Severn to balance energy production with environmental and societal impacts.
