What is Unity?
Unity in writing is the connection of all ideas to a single
topic. In an essay, all ideas should related to the thesis
statement, and the supporting ideas in the main body
paragraph should relate to the topic sentence
Information take from Zemach, D (2011)
Writing Essays.

Activity:
This paragraph is a description of Pha That Luang, a Lotion monument. All
the supporting sentences should be part of the descripton, but ONE
sentence is not. Find the irrelevant sentence in this paragraph and cross it
out.
Pha That Luang is a beautiful monument to the independence
of the Loatian people. On top of a hill in the capital city, Pha That
Luang can be seen for miles. In fact, when I first saw it, I was at
least 10 miles away. Its base is a square with four walls that look
like large lotus petals. At each corners is a stupa, and there is one
gate on each of the four sides. The gates open onto stairs that take
you to the second level. The second level is another smallers
square with 30 stupas surrounding it. The thid level has the
grandest stupa in the middle. It reaces 45 meters from the base of
the monument to its top. It is shaped like a long lotus bud, and on
top it is a decoration that looks like a banana flower with an
umbrella on its top. The whole monuments is covered in shining
gold leaf. Pha That Luang truly is a treasure for the Loatian people.

Two Similar Canals
The Suez Canal and the Panama Canal have similar histories. Today,
many tourists visit both canals. The same Frechman, Ferdinand de
Lesseps, controlled the initial building of both canals. The Suez Canal was
begun in 1859 by the Suez Canal Company. This company, which
completed the project in 1869, was controled by the French. Likewise,
the French bouth a Colombian canal-building company in 1881 in order to
build the Panama Canal. Although the French started the canal, the
United States finally finished that canal in 1941. Before this, Panama
gained its independence from Colombia. In the end, however, both canals
finally came under control of the countries in which they are located.
Egyps gained control of the Suez Canal in 1957 by fightning France and
Britain. Panama gained control over its canal peaceably in 1977. These
similar events took place about twenty years apart and proved the world
with two important waterways.

Learning from Mummies
Mummies have provided archeologists with imporant information about past
civilizations. For example, Tollund Man is a mummy that was found by farmers in
Denmark in 1950. The mummy was so well preserved that the farmers thought that
they had uncovered a recent murder. In fact, Tollund Man lived over 2,000 years ago.
His stomach contained the ingredients for a vegetable soup. Momia Juanita, found in
Peru, is another mummy that was so well preseved that her internal organs could be
analyzed. Because of this, archeologists learned more about the health and nutrition
of the Inca people 500 years ago. Another example is the Iceman, which was found in
the Alps in 1991. This mummified man answered hundreds of questions about life in
the region over 5,000 years ago. One of the most significant mummy discoveries was
the Tarim mummies, which were found in central China. These mummies were of
European, not Asian, descent. This discovery suggested that there were trade routes
between Asia and Europe thousands of years ago. Even today, there are communities,
such as Summum, that practice mummification. Therefore, archeologists in the future
will also have mummies to learn from. In short archeologists love to find mummies
and learn somehing new about the past.

  • 1. Module 7 What is Unity? Unity in writing is the connection of all ideas to a single topic. In an essay, all ideas should related to the thesis statement, and the supporting ideas in the main body paragraph should relate to the topic sentence Information take from Zemach, D (2011) Writing Essays.
  • 2. How to check the unity of an essay • Follow these steps 1. Underline the thesis statement. 2. Underline each topic sentence 3. List the supporting ideas in each main body paragraph. 4. Check if the topic sentences relate to the thesis statement. 5. Check how the suporting ideas relate to the topic sentences
  • 3. How to keep unity in an essay • Follow these steps 1. Edit the outline for ideas that are not relevant to the thesis statement or topic sentences. 2. After you have written the essay, review the text and look for ideas that do not relate to the thesis or topic sentences. 3. Cross out and remove sentences or ideas that do not belong or do not relate to the thesis statement.
  • 4. Activity: This paragraph is a description of Pha That Luang, a Lotion monument. All the supporting sentences should be part of the descripton, but ONE sentence is not. Find the irrelevant sentence in this paragraph and cross it out. Pha That Luang is a beautiful monument to the independence of the Loatian people. On top of a hill in the capital city, Pha That Luang can be seen for miles. In fact, when I first saw it, I was at least 10 miles away. Its base is a square with four walls that look like large lotus petals. At each corners is a stupa, and there is one gate on each of the four sides. The gates open onto stairs that take you to the second level. The second level is another smallers square with 30 stupas surrounding it. The thid level has the grandest stupa in the middle. It reaces 45 meters from the base of the monument to its top. It is shaped like a long lotus bud, and on top it is a decoration that looks like a banana flower with an umbrella on its top. The whole monuments is covered in shining gold leaf. Pha That Luang truly is a treasure for the Loatian people.
