Refreshing Your UI with HTML5, Bootstrap and CSS3Matt Raible
Many startups and open source projects have the luxury of starting greenfield projects. Unfortunately, the corporate world rarely works this way. It's more maintenance coding and a few new features every now and then. This session covers how you can use three of the hottest technologies (HTML5, CSS3 and Bootstrap) to spruce up a legacy application. It describes a real-world situation where a redesign was implemented in a few short weeks, making an old site look brand new. It also does a deep dive into Bootstrap, explains LESS, and shows pitfalls with older browsers. After this session, you'll be motivated to integrate Bootstrap into your applications and turn that legacy UI into something sexy!

Battle of the Front-End Frameworks: Bootstrap vs. FoundationRachel Cherry
Responsive web design is a must these days but it can be a little tricky to make your design work on all devices and screen sizes, especially if you have to start from scratch each time. Front-end frameworks make it very easy to quickly create responsive, standard-complaint websites by providing a reusable structure (HTML, CSS, JS), with configurable components, that allows you to hit the ground running with minimum effort. And the two most powerful frameworks? Bootstrap and Foundation. Rachel has used both Bootstrap and Foundation with numerous WordPress projects and will not only show you how to get started using these frameworks, but will also present a comparison of these two systems and the differences you’ll face when using them to create a WordPress theme.
Bootstrap
Bootstrap is the popular framework for making responsive application development for the web and mobile. Bootstrap includes HTML- and CSS-based design templates for typography, forms, buttons, tables, navigation, modals, image carousels, etc. I will see other libraries that were built based on Bootstrap lately. I think currently everyone must have worked with Bootstrap in your journey as a software developer, and now it’s time to explore the most recent version. Bootstrap 5’s alpha version was released recently, and in this blog, I’ll discuss five of its major features.

Minimalist Theming: How to Build a Lean, Mean Drupal 8 ThemeSuzanne Dergacheva
Back in the Drupal 7 days (aka last year), we came across some pretty large, hard-to-maintain Drupal 7 sites. The theme was often responsible for a lot of the cruft. We saw themes with excess code, too many template files, and not enough documentation.
The Drupal 8 theme layer provides new features like libraries and Twig blocks that can help us to build cleaner, better-organized themes. So now is a good time for themers to re-visit which theming techniques to use to create themes that are smaller, maintainable, and well organized.
This is the presentation that I put together for DrupalCamp Philadelphia. It discusses the difference in building pages in Drupal using core block system vs Context module or Panels.

WordCamp NEO 2016 presentation "Custom Responsive Theme Workshop" by David Brattoli
While we could use many different frameworks, premium and free themes to build our sites, I have found you need a truly custom framework to build a base to build new themes quickly to meet your project needs. This method to create a framework and then to create a child theme for the look of the site, will allow you build future sites quickly and efficiently. The session will cover why we choose this method and framework, the challenges we faced, how we tackled the challenge, and what we ended up building to solve the problem. I'll also reveal the pitfalls we discovered and how we overcame those as well.

"Your customer data flows faster each day, which is why collecting, organizing, and doing something meaningful with it is just good business.
But, it can be tough to do.
Stashing data in different places across your organization to come back (hopefully) later is a great way to mismanage or lose it. Squirrels can stash, but enterprises can’t.
You need a customer data platform (CDP). A central command center that securely holds your customer data and lets you organize it according to your goals.
The thing is, what’s best for you? A CDP out-of-the-box? Building a customer data solution yourself? There’s merit in both options, and this webinar is here to help you narrow down what’s best for your business. Acquia, Bounteous, and Appnovation will show you:
How a single source for customer data storage can mitigate risk and optimize customer experience
How central data governance will help your customer data strategy once the almighty Google takes away cookies
The comprehensive CDP build-or-buy checklist + CDP must-haves for your budget
First-party data management that keeps your customers' data safe and your business booming
It’s 10 PM, do you know where your data is?"

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
