3. “Drought is most costly natural disaster that
can lead to widespread impacts, including
water and food crises”
• Metrological Drought Hazard Profile
• Hydrological Drought - slow onset
• Agricultural Drought - prolonged duration
- widespread
4. • Semi-Arid areas are more prone.
• Severity of Drought is intensifies by “Over-
cropping, Over-grazing & Deforestation”.
• Rapid population of growth can have a direct
impact on size & magnitude of Drought.
• Major droughts recur in 12-16 years cycle and
lesser versions every 4-6 years in the vulnerable
regions.
Drought may results in secondary NATURAL HAZARDS
such as
1. Dust Storms
2. Malnutrition related diseases
3. Wildfire
5. Direct
loss of income
social dislocation
famine/malnutrition/death
Indirect
loss of rural and urban revenues
fire hazard, loss of water access

1999-2001 Drought:
• Affected the entire country but Balochistan was worst
affected followed by Sindh.
• 3 million people affected and 2.5 million livestock lost.
• 58 districts seriously affected, or which 23 were from
Balochistan.
• Agricultural growth registered negative 2.5%. Losses
estimated at $1.2 billion; economic growth retarded by
2.6%.

8. • Thar home to a population of 1,299,735, has been the
most severely affected, where 817 persons have perished
over the last several months.
• Since the beginning of 2014 due to a combination of
chronic malnutrition, a lack of access to effective health
facilities, lower than average rainfall in Chachro, Diplo,
Khinser, Islamkot, Mithi tehsils (sub-districts), and an
outbreak of sheep pox which has killed thousands of small
animals.
9. • According to the Joint UN Needs Assessment, several
districts have been severely affected by extreme water
scarcity (62% in Jamshoro and 100% in Tharparkar),
and it has resulted in reduced harvest by 34-53% and
livestock by 48%. (UNICEF, 30 Jun 2016)

17. Structural / Physical Measures
appropriate crops, dams or engineering
projects.
Non-Structural Measures
policies, awareness, knowledge development,
public commitment, and operating practices
undertaken to limit the adverse impacts of

19. • Pakistan dam’s water storage capacity is much less than the
neighboring countries like India. Therefore it is the need of the
hour to built large and small dames in catchments areas
especially the rainfall water during monsoon period.
• Manage the floods and storage the water.
• The stored water will protect food security especially fulfill the
water requirements of crops during drought period in the
country.
Editor's Notes
WE can define drought in three main ways 1) related to rainfall amounts. 2) determined by water level in reservoirs.
3) related to the availability of water for crops.
i.e, Great Plains, USA and Australia

Most Vulnerable areas that are between 80% and above are lie in the areas of Baluchistan and district of sindh named tharparkar// less vulnerable aras are lie in the districts of Punjab and some part of FATA
If we talk about risk ranking in Pakistan that the acutely vulnerable areas are also in Balochistan and Sindh// Moderately Vulnerable areas lie in the araeas of Punjab
This is the Graph of in 20th century where we can see the most vulnerable population lie in the sindh province but in 21st century the areas of baluchistan are most vulnerable in pakistan
If we see, the Drought Severity in Gloabal Level that Extremely Moist Country in Argentina which is indicated by Blue, // and the Exreme Drought chances are in the parts of Canada, Nigera, Nepal
The yellow light color shows the less stress in global level // and Red Colour shows the Extremely high water stress around the world
Natural disaster could not be stopped. Each disaster gives us a lesson to do better planning,
management and taking some precautionary measures to minimize its impacts in future.
