Successes, challenges and opportunities for circular buildings Architecture and sustainability go a long way back. Now Circularity is entering this domain. On stage: Hans Goverde, partner at Kraaijvanger Architects. He will present Venlo City Hall: a Cradle to Cradle project, that has deliberately been under development since its first completion. Hans will talk about the choice for this development strategy (instead of going for a BREEAM certificate), new ways of cooperation and the challenges of a specific circular approach. Daniel Driessen from the Municipality of The Hague will present the case of a new waste collecting station, that was build using recycled materials. Successes, challenges and suggest opportunities are shared and discussed with the speakers, CIRCO, BNA and the audience. Powered by BNA and CIRCO.

And old stadium seats of Amsterdam ArenA are turned into collector's items by Amsterdam based designers. Circular Business and design opportunities for textile challenges The Dutch clothing mountain has been measured, we have a roadmap on closing textile loops, there is a lot of circular activity in the field of textile. How can new insights help creative professionals to create circular business in fashion? The Roadmap Circular Textiles, presented by Peter Koppert from MODINT, is drawn up by about 100 stakeholders from around 50 organisations. The goal is to reduce the use of virgin fibres (synthetical, cotton and wool) with the carrying capacity of the earth, clearly keeping in mind that 9 billion people will eventually start dressing on a level similar to Western consumption levels. The aim is to connect Dutch circular ambitions to the collection development by Dutch brands, clothing companies and retailers in a Circular Textile Vallley. Knowledge and capacity are brought together to develop circular fashion and textiles and to make pilot productions. The members of the Alliance for Responsible Denim are strongly aligned in their desire to produce denim in a sustainable way. They aim to collaborate together to achieve this goal. Their purpose is to make the industry cleaner and smarter so that denim is produced in the most sustainable way. Lori Divito will share opportunities they see and the challenges the faced, in particular the start of new ways of collaboration. Irene Maldini will (HvA) will present the outcomes of the research project Measuring the Dutch Clothing Mountain. The aim is to promote realistic sustainability-oriented actions in the apparel sector by designers, entrepreneurs and policy makers to tackle the issue of growing clothing volumes in the Netherlands, based on reliable and concrete data. The project involved a consortium of partners devoted to inform designers, entrepreneurs and policy makers on relevant issues for sustainability in the apparel sector, at a national level. The resulting publication includes data on clothing supply, use, and disposal in the Netherlands. Irene will focus on how the outcomes of the project can help in developing business and design strategies to maintain or reduce the volume of clothing in circulation. Dynamorphosis – The beauty of inner mechanisms Lilian van Daal and Roos Meerman developed 'Dynamorphosis, the beauty of inner mechanisms' in collaboration with Renee Van Amerongen of the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences of the University of Amsterdam / Universiteit van Amsterdam. 'Dynamorphosis' consists of a series of 3D printed, kinetic objects. This project merges the invisible biological process of the body with 3D printing, with attention to biology’s ability to self-assemble, transfer substances, and maintain equilibrium.

What do we still need to know and do to speed up circular development? Researchers and entrepreneurs have joined forces to collect research topics to create a roadmap for research on the circular economy and the role of the creative professional. Marien Korthorst, Siem Haffmans, Inge Oskam and Conny Bakker were involved in this process and will highlight what issues they think are most urgent. Conny will then present an interesting new research topic and issue that all designers shoud be aware of: how do the different conceptualisations of product integrity in a circular economy influence the design of products? Different concepts of product integrity in a circular economy are currently being promoted. There are two dominant and almost opposing concepts: the ‘open loop, open source’ concept and the ‘closed loop, closed source’ concept. These concepts vary widely in the extent of product transparency they propose, the responsibility for creating cyclical product and material flows, and the view of what constitutes a ‘good’ or a ‘bad’ circular product. These issues are very relevant regarding the realization of a circular economy and the provision of guidelines for circular product design. In today’s breakout sessions different domains will be explored: circular fashion, products that flow, circular architecture, consuming circular value, and resource driven design. Speakers form these sessions will present their vision on the questions of today and share the fresh insights form the breakouts. To round of the day and start the speeding up of circular development through design, CLICKNL managing director Bart Ahsmann and Erik Roscam Abbing will digest their insights of today and present concrete action points for everybody present. Nature is an under-recognised healer, a recent report from the European environmental policy (IEEP) concluded. And indeed, academic studies have shown that nature heals and improves mental functioning and, as such, is one of the most important determinants of wellbeing. At the same time, there is a lack of insights into which specific elements of nature are important. As a result, few nature-based design interventions are evidence-based. The goal of this session is to show how to develop an evidence-based design approach to human flourishing. Organisers: Karin Tanja-Dijkstra, Thomas van Rompay, Geke Ludden Moderator: Karin Tanja-Dijkstra Nature and human flourishing Exposure to nature is fundamental for inspiring mental states conducive to mental health and psychological wellbeing including creativity, inspiration, and wonder. We are now just beginning to understand why and what it is in nature that is so beneficial. In this session, Thomas will review these findings and highlight their design implications. Speaker: Thomas van Rompay Nature in the healthcare environment Based on the knowledge of the health benefits of nature in clinical environments, Karin will discuss several research challenges, introduce novel research ideas, and share results of recent projects where she demonstrates how nature-based interventions can provide further evidence of the benefits of nature in healthcare. With the shift of the scope of societal issues to the system level and long-term impact, the individual threatens to be lost from sight. Socio-technical systems are often hard to comprehend for people. Within that growing complexity it’s important to (permanently) shift back to the human experience, the significance for a culture or community and the personal or user experience. A countermovement is needed from global to local. What makes people happy? What moves them and what challenges them? And what degree of autonomy do they want to preserve or give up? With the growing (technological) possibilities, more and more often the questions arises of what we want to measure and know (‘quantified self’) and what we can do with all that data in varying domains such as e-health, education and museums.

A one day symposium on zero/low carbon sustainable homes took place at The University of Nottingham on the 24th October, 2012. The event offered professionals within the construction industry a unique opportunity to gain added and significant insight into the innovations, policies and legislation which are driving the construction of zero/low carbon energy efficient homes both here in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. It explored solutions to sustainability issues “beyond” the zero carbon agenda. BZCH followed on from the successful ‘Towards Zero Carbon Housing’ symposium the University hosted in 2007. This event is part of the Europe Wide Ten Act10n project which is supported by the European Commission Intelligent Energy Europe.

Beyond the current Many design solutions are produced without paying much attention to the architectural and cultural heritage quality, as well as not researching consumer preferences and means. These aspects are of increasingly important when designing non-row housing, particularly in the larger cities. This proposal aims to generate design solutions for the deep renovation of representative parts of the more complex housing stock, to increase both energy efficiency and architectural quality.

wkrm is a student-run, faculty-led design studio housed at the Department of Fine Arts building at the University of Texas at Austin. The studio provides students with the experience of working with clients in a realistic setting and support for their professional development. During the Fall 2023 semester, we worked with Austin Transit Partnership to provide student perspectives on campus mobility that may inform the design and future integration of the forthcoming Light Rail at The University of Texas at Austin. During the Spring 2024 semester, a new cohort of students advanced ideas for improving campus orientation and navigation by designing a pedestrian wayfinding system.

Demands/Wishes • Design and construct a wastestation • Energy and water neutral • Minimal percentage daylight • 100% natural ventilation • All materials reusable/recyclable after lifecycle waste station • All materials must be traceable • Minimum volume sustainable material in visible parts of the building (huge challenge for the market) 5. Tender

9. Asses on several criteria: Sustainability • We conceived our own method of valuation: 1. Reuse of household waste 2. Reused materials 3. Renewable materials 4. Recycled materials 5. Non reusable materials • Only reused materials visible parts of the building 5. Tender

10. • Four parties participated in the tender • They all scored 100% on sustainablity • High quality design - Roof - Walls - Wood 6. Result
