STRATEGIES FOR ENHANCEMENT IN FOOD PRODUCTION ANIMAL HUSBENDARY
Animal Husbandry • Agricultral practice of breeding & raising livestock. • Deals with the care & breeding of livestock like bufffaloes,cows,pigs,horses,cattle,sheep,came ls,goats,etc.,that are useful to humans. • Also includes poultry & fisheries.
India & China - >70% of world livestock but contribution to world farm production is only 25%
Livestock • Includes domesticated animals/farm animals. • Examples- Bufffaloes,Cows,Pigs,Horses,Cattle,Sheep,Cam els,Goats,etc.,.
Cattle/Cow(Bos indicus) & Buffalo(Bubalus) Mainly used for – • Agricultural operations • Milk • Transportation • Manure & fuel • Leather • Meat.
Types of Cattle breeds • Milch breeds(milk producing) • Draught breeds (for working) • General utility breeds(for both).
Breeds of Buffaloes • Surti • Nagpuri(ellichpuri) • Jaffrabdi • Murrah • Mehsana
Breeds of Cattle/cows • Holstein-Friesian • Jersey • Brown swiss • Red Dane.
Important breeds of Indian Cattles  Milch Breeds • Gir – Gujrat,Rajasthan. • Sahiwal – Punjab,Haryana,U.P. • Red Sindhi – Andhra Pradesh  Draught Breeds • Malvi – Rajasthan,M.P. • Nageri – Haryana,Delhi,U.P.
