Wales has had partnerships between schools, hospitals, and communities in Lesotho since 1985. Lesotho, also known as the "Mountain Kingdom", is a small country surrounded by South Africa that exports water to its larger neighbor. About half of Lesotho's population is dependent on food assistance due to poverty and drought. The Wales-Lesotho educational partnerships include a legacy of school exchange visits, a teacher placement program, and the Lesotho Literacy Leap project working in two districts since 2013 to improve literacy using new curriculum resources and reading strategies. Schools and organizations in Wales donate books and resources to support literacy programs in Lesotho.
