eTwinning Project- Velindre Community School 
Velindre Community School- many pupils with reading ages 
significantly lower than their chronological ages. 
“In terms of literacy; projects involving e-mails/letter writing/postcards/ 
presentations in various creative ICT-related formats have developed 
spoken skills, reading and writing.” 
“Improving our pupils’ literacy standards does not work by merely 
having more Maths and English lessons. It is mainstream education 
that they struggled with in the first place. The international dimension 
makes the work appear more ‘real’ to our pupils.“

Changemakers Conference 2014 
 Theme- Issues linked to the global fashion industry. 
 Invites young people to explore these issues and to think 
critically about the impact of the fashion industry. 
 Empowers students to take action by organising a 
conference to raise awareness within their schools. 
 Offers free whole school ESDGC training for staff.

Bishop Hedley School, Merthyr (taken 1 year on) 
 Appointment of joint Year 5/6/7 Numeracy teacher (working across 
schools in the cluster)

 Professional development between KS2 and KS3 staff- joint planning 
of lessons, joint monitoring and assessment of pupil progress

Reducing the Impact of Poverty on Attainment 
Impact of ‘Closing the Gap’ IPLC visit to New York- 
Roath Park Primary School, Cardiff (one year on) 
 The school has appointed a Family Engagement Officer on a part time 
basis 
 Introduction of Grandparents Open mornings, Parent literacy and ICT 
classes set up by the school, parent interview days and the Family 
Values scheme 
 New school rule- no child comes into school until school staff have 
visited the family at home.

Improving Literacy eTwinning Project- Velindre Community School Velindre Community School- many pupils with reading ages significantly lower than their chronological ages. “In terms of literacy; projects involving e-mails/letter writing/postcards/ presentations in various creative ICT-related formats have developed spoken skills, reading and writing.” “Improving our pupils’ literacy standards does not work by merely having more Maths and English lessons. It is mainstream education that they struggled with in the first place. The international dimension makes the work appear more ‘real’ to our pupils.“ www.britishcouncil.org 14

Giving Students a Better Understanding of Other Cultures Chinese Language Assistants “It is an amazing privilege to learn about China, its education/history/geography/arts/music and more from our CLA and to hear her perspective on the English/Welsh education system and Welsh language and culture. Increasing Numeracy Levels Impact of Numeracy IPLC visit to India- Bishop Hedley School, Merthyr (taken 1 year on)  Appointment of joint Year 5/6/7 Numeracy teacher (working across schools in the cluster)  Renewed focus on basics of numeracy  Professional development between KS2 and KS3 staff- joint planning of lessons, joint monitoring and assessment of pupil progress www.britishcouncil.org 18

Reducing the Impact of Poverty on Attainment Impact of ‘Closing the Gap’ IPLC visit to New York- Roath Park Primary School, Cardiff (one year on)  The school has appointed a Family Engagement Officer on a part time basis  Introduction of Grandparents Open mornings, Parent literacy and ICT classes set up by the school, parent interview days and the Family Values scheme  New school rule- no child comes into school until school staff have visited the family at home. www.britishcouncil.org 19
