Methods: The current case-control study was conducted at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital. The study included two groups of women: group A, including pregnant women with a history of unexplained recurrent miscarriage; and group B, including control pregnant women with no prior miscarriage. Women included in either group were at their first trimester of pregnancy (6-13 weeks of gestation). For all included women, 3-hour oral glucose test was performed. Serum insulin levels were measured at the same times. Markers of insulin resistance, including HOMA-IR, HOMA-B, AUCG and AUCI were calculated.

Thinking About Success and Failure in Obesity CareObesityHelp
Even though obesity has officially been classified as disease by important groups like the American Medical Association, many people – doctors included – put all the emphasis on the scale and on other measures like body mass index (BMI). In this talk we will look at how success is measured now and other ways to define success after bariatric surgery. Time allowing, we will also talk about some of the long-term issues related to health and nutrition after bariatric surgery, with a focus on things that contribute to weight regain.
Because of such a high consumption level, any risky impact of these pills on public health would be important. The present study aimed to determine the relationship between consumption of OCPs and hypertension. Method: In this retrospective, cross-sectional study, 165women below 40 years of age who used OCPs were selected by convenience sampling. Necessary information was obtained by a checklist containing demographic information, obstetric history, and OCPs use history based on the subjects’ medical records. Besides, blood pressure and weight were measured at the beginning of OCPs consumption as well as 6 months and one year after that. Results: The results showed a significant difference between the subjects’ mean systolic blood pressure one year after OCPs consumption compared to the beginning (P=0.03). Moreover, this difference was related to the type of pills, such a way that it was significant in the patients who took Low Dose (LD) OCPs compared to those who used Triphasic pills (P=0.01). Conclusion: Consuming the currently available OCPs that contain lower estrogen content had an insignificant effect on blood pressure. However, it is recommended to take care of blood pressure in order to identify the unique occasional responses.

What to Do When the Honeymoon is Over by Dr. Scott CunneenObesityHelp
For those planning to have weight loss surgery, as well as for those who have already done so, extensive patient education is required – or at least it should be. There’s the excitement of having made this life-changing decision, and the thrill of the weight coming off after surgery – for some, fast and furious, for others slower and more steadily. We call that the “honeymoon period,” when you can almost stand in front of a mirror and watch the changes take place. You’re excited, committed and compliant. And then a year goes by, and another, and before you know it, you’re three or four or five years post-op…with a whole new set of issues, or maybe some of the old ones resurfacing. Dr. Cunneen would like his audience to think about what “success” really means for weight loss surgery patients, how to achieve it and, most importantly, how to make it last.

Dietary Strategies for Weight Loss MaintenanceMARKETDIGITALBN
Weight regain after a successful weight loss intervention is very common. Most studies
show that, on average, the weight loss attained during a weight loss intervention period is not
or is not fully maintained during follow-up. We review what is currently known about dietary
strategies for weight loss maintenance, focusing on nutrient composition by means of a systematic
review and meta-analysis of studies and discuss other potential strategies that have not been studied
so far. Twenty-one studies with 2875 participants who were overweight or obese are included in

Weight Science: Evaluating the Evidence for a
Paradigm Shift
Linda Bacon1*, Lucy Aphramor2,3
Abstract
Current guidelines recommend that “overweight” and “obese” individuals lose weight through engaging in lifestyle
modification involving diet, exercise and other behavior change. This approach reliably induces short term weight
loss, but the majority of individuals are unable to maintain weight loss over the long term and do not achieve the
putative benefits of improved morbidity and mortality. Concern has arisen that this weight focus is not only
ineffective at producing thinner, healthier bodies, but may also have unintended consequences, contributing to
food and body preoccupation, repeated cycles of weight loss and regain, distraction from other personal health
goals and wider health determinants, reduced self-esteem, eating disorders, other health decrement, and weight
stigmatization and discrimination. This concern has drawn increased attention to the ethical implications of
recommending treatment that may be ineffective or damaging. A growing trans-disciplinary movement called
Health at Every Size (HAES) challenges the value of promoting weight loss and dieting behavior and argues for a
shift in focus to weight-neutral outcomes. Randomized controlled clinical trials indicate that a HAES approach is
associated with statistically and clinically relevant improvements in physiological measures (e.g., blood pressure,
blood lipids), health behaviors (e.g., eating and activity habits, dietary quality), and psychosocial outcomes (such as
self-esteem and body image), and that HAES achieves these health outcomes more successfully than weight loss
treatment and without the contraindications associated with a weight focus. This paper evaluates the evidence
and rationale that justifies shifting the health care paradigm from a conventional weight focus to HAES.
Introduction
Concern regarding “overweight” and “obesity” is reflected
in a diverse range of policy measures aimed at helping
individuals reduce their body mass index (BMI)1. Despite
attention from the public health establishment, a private
weight loss industry estimated at $58.6 billion annually in
the United States [1], unprecedented levels of body dissa-
tisfaction [2] and repeated attempts to lose weight [3,4],
the majority of individuals are unable to maintain weight
loss over the long term and do not achieve the putative
benefits of improved morbidity and mortality [5].
Concern has arisen that this weight focused paradigm is
not only ineffective at producing thinner, healthier
bodies, but also damaging, contributing to food and body
preoccupation, repeated cycles of weight loss and regain,
distraction from other personal health goals and wider
health determinants, reduced self-esteem, eating disor-
ders, other health decrement, and weight stigmatization
and discrimination [6-8]. As evidence-based competen-
cies are more firmly embedded in health practitioner

A clinical study on medical cupping for metabolic syndrome with abdominal obe...LucyPi1
Abstract Objective: To observe the clinical effects of medical cupping for metabolic syndrome (MetS) with abdominal obesity. Methods: In total, 75 patients with MetS with abdominal obesity were randomly divided into three groups: medical cupping, acupuncture, and waiting. Patients in the medical cupping group received smearing of Chinese medicine and cupping twice a week for 8 weeks. Patients in the acupuncture group received acupuncture on regulating the Dai meridian three times a week for 8 weeks. The waiting group was observed without any intervention. Changes in metabolic indices, including waist circumference (WC), blood pressure, fasting triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), fasting blood glucose (FBG), 2-h blood glucose (2hBG), and subcutaneous fat thickness were observed and compared before and after treatment among the three groups. Results: After the treatment, the WC, TG, FBG, and 2hBG in the medical cupping and acupuncture groups were lower than those in the waiting group. No difference was observed between the medical cupping and acupuncture groups. The subcutaneous fat thickness at the upper umbilicus, right side of the umbilicus, and waist in the medical cupping and acupuncture groups were lower than those in the waiting group. The subcutaneous fat thickness at the upper umbilicus and waist in the medical cupping group was lower than that in the acupuncture group. The MetS prevalence in the medical cupping and acupuncture groups was lower than that in the waiting group. Conclusion: medical cupping treatment can effectively alleviate metabolic indices and subcutaneous fat thickness at the abdomen in patients with MetS and abdominal obesity and decrease the MetS prevalence. Its efficacy was better than that of waiting and similar to that of acupuncture. The frequency of medical cupping is lower than that of the acupuncture. Meanwhile, it circumvents some patients’ fear of acupuncture. medical cupping should be clinically promoted.

In this mini-review benefits and risks of Growth Hormone (GH) replacement therapy in adults with GH deficiency are discussed. In addition, a cost-benefit analysis will be made and the inevitable illicit use and doping of growth hormone will be considered. Global human growth hormone market is expected to rise to USD 7,1 billion in 2025 and is the fastest growing market segment in Pharma due to extending GH treatment indications and investments of large players. Growth hormone use in anti-aging is highly controversial but booming. New guidelines are discussed as well as the recently FDA approved ghrelin oral GH stimulation test. The very recent horizon view of the Growth Hormone Research Society is discussed as well as the proteomic search for putative new biomarkers for detecting GH defiency in patients and doping in athletes. GH replacement therapy in children remains a costly treatment with USD 35.000-50.000 for each gained inch in height.

Abstract: Diabetes-specific formulas have shown to be effective at improving glucose control with additional
nutritional benefits. Furthermore, diabetes-specific formulas are commonly used for diabetic patients with
insufficient oral intake. However, not much diabetes-specific formulas in the market shows the GI of these
formulas, which is clinically useful on glycemic control in patients with diabetes. The aim of this study was to
assess the GI of a newly developed diabetes-specific formula, Contro eazy NOW. The open labelled, single center
study involved 11 individuals from a pool of 18 healthy subjects. After an overnight fast, volunteers were given
Contro eazy NOW containing 50g of carbohydrate or the reference drink (glucolin) on different occasions in
random order. Postprandial blood glucose levels were measured in finger pricked capillary blood for two hours
after intake of the beverages and positive incremental area under the curve (AUC) was calculated for both Contro
eazy NOW and reference drink. The GI of Contro eazy NOW was determined by dividing AUC (Contro eazy
NOW) by the AUC (reference drink). The results show that the diabetes-specific formula has the GI of 38.4, which
is categorized as low GI. Therefore, Contro eazy NOW with low GI can be the preferred option for nutritional
management of diabetic patients in need of nutritional support.
Keywords: diabetes-specific formula, diabetes, low glycemic index, medical nutrition therapy.

New Directions in Targeted Therapeutic Approaches for Older Adults With Mantl...i3 Health
i3 Health is pleased to make the speaker slides from this activity available for use as a non-accredited self-study or teaching resource.
This slide deck presented by Dr. Kami Maddocks, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Hematology and
Associate Division Director for Ambulatory Operations
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL.
Target Audience
Hematology/oncology fellows, attending faculty, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).
Learning Objectives
1.) Identify clinical and biological prognostic factors that can guide treatment decision making for older adults with MCL
2.) Evaluate emerging data on targeted therapeutic approaches for treatment-naive and relapsed/refractory MCL and their applicability to older adults
3.) Assess mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies for MCL and their implications for treatment selection
Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

ranged from 16 to 73 points (maximum score 100), suggesting that most studies were of poor methodological quality.
Of the 12 studies scoring 50 or more points, one reported that HCG was a useful adjunct. The studies scoring 50 or
more points were all controlled. 5. We conclude that there is no scientific evidence that HCG is effective in the
treatment of obesity; it does not bring about weight-loss of fat-redistribution, nor does it reduce hunger or induce a
feeling of well-being.”
And the abstract from the European PubMed:
“The British physician A.T.W. Simeons described in 1954 a new method for dieting. He combined a reduction diet
(500 kcal per day) with daily injections of the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) (125 IU i.m.).
According to Simeons the patient should not lose more weight during a 4-to-6 weeks' diet than without hCG, but the
injections should facilitate to maintain the diet and to lose body weight at specific parts of the body (e.g. hip, belly,
thigh). After the first publication various studies conducted with male and female patients analysed the efficacy of the
"Cura romana". 10 of these studies showed positive and another 10 studies negative results with regard to hCG-
related weight reduction. Two of these studies with positive results were double-blind studies (hCG vs. placebo). Most
of them were reports on therapeutical experiences and were not controlled studies. According to these reports the
body proportions normalized and the feeling of hunger was tolerable. Four out of 10 studies with negative results
were controlled studies (hCG vs. control without hCG), whereas 6 were double-blind studies. These studies showed a
significant weight reduction during dieting, but no differences between treatment groups in respect of body weight,
body proportions and feeling of hunger. One of them is the only German study conducted by Rabe et al. in 1981 in
which 82 randomised premenopausal volunteers had been dieting either with hCG or without hCG injections. In
recent publications describing mostly well-documented double-blind studies authors largely reject hCG administration
in dieting. Supporters of the hCG diet must prove the efficacy of this method in controlled studies according to the
2. German Drug Law. Until then the opinion of the German steroid toxicology panel is still valid, that hCG is ineffective in
dieting and should not be used (Bolt 1982 a, 1982 b).”
So whilst these papers seem to have a rather negative view of the diet, the many
people who have experienced fantastic results from using it, may have a differing
opinion.
