Dr. Charles Jennissen, of the University of Iowa Department of Emergency Medicine presented this at CPSC's ATV Safety Summit Oct. 12, 2012. The study objective was to understand the effect of passengers on ATV-related crashes and injuries. Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed of ATV-related injuries from 2002-2009 at a university hospital. Results: 345 cases were identified of which 20% were passengers or drivers with passengers. Females and children were more likely to be passengers. Overall helmet use was low (~20%), and passengers were less likely than operators to wear helmets. There was a trend observed wherein passengers increased the likelihood of rollovers on sloped terrains, with backward rollovers the most likely to involve passengers. Victims who fell/were ejected to the rear were significantly more likely to have been on an ATV with passengers than were victims of other ejections or those not ejected, and also had more severe head injuries. Self-ejections and forward ejections appeared less likely with passengers. Patients who self-ejected had higher extremity injury scores than patients who fell/were ejected by other mechanisms, but had less severe head injuries. Conclusions: Passengers on ATVs may be at greater risk for fall/ejection to the rear and rearward falls/ejections appeared to increase the risk of head injury. Strict and well enforced "no passenger" laws could reduce risk of some ATV crashes and injuries.

Digital Humanities is a term that elicits both excitement and scorn in scholarly circles, and there is still a great deal of discussion as to whether it is a field of inquiry, a set of research methods, or simply a new perspective on arts and humanities research. This workshop will provide a brief survey of how the evolving theory and practice of using contemporary technology and technology-assisted research methods are impacting scholarship in the arts and humanities.
How can design help us communicate data easily to users? Where does this stem from? What methods of design are easy for users to engage with? What should we be trying to achieve with these designs?
The cultural sector is a big adopter of open data and semantic web technologies. They have embraced the ideas and are weaving them into everything they do. So, who is doing what? What data sets are there available? And how have these been presented to the public.
Using case studies from the cultural sector, we will explore the practical challenges associated with complex UI designs. Looking at work-in-progress through to finished products we will discuss best practice, finding innovation, and the challenges of working with data sets.

Over the past six years, Getty has been engaged in a project to transform and unify its complex digital infrastructure for cultural heritage information. One of the project’s core goals was to provide validation of the impact and value of the use of linked data throughout this process. With museum, archival, media, and vocabularies in production and others underway, this sessions shares some of the practical implications (and pitfalls) of this work—particularly as it relates to interoperability, discovery, staffing, stakeholder engagement, and complexity management. The session will also share examples of how other organizations can streamline their own, similar work going forward.

Historically, the practice of web archiving has involved various institutions and the development of various practices, approaches and tools. Among them, three main approaches to web archiving have been developed: web archive research using the Internet Archive and Wayback Machine, the practice of archiving special collections of websites, and the national approach of archiving webs of specific countries. These approaches and practices do not only reflect the time in which they were conceived in the history of web archiving, but also put forward distinct ways in which they may be used and consequently what type of historiographical research can be done with them. However, there are also limits to what these tools and practices offer. The purpose of this talk is to introduce the limits of doing research with the Internet Archive with existing tools such as the Wayback Machine and in addition, to show how digital methods are used to repurpose the Wayback Machine in order to go beyond the single-site historical research that is enabled by the Internet Archive. This will be illustrated in a case study on the Dutch blogosphere where by means of custom tools built on top of the Wayback Machine yearly snapshots of the historical Dutch blogosphere were created between 1999-2009. By reconstructing the interlinked set of blogs, the blogosphere, one can trace and map transitions in linking technologies and practices in the Dutch blogosphere over time. This approach allows for studying the emergence and decline of blog platforms and social media platforms within the blogosphere and for investigating local blog cultures.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Digital Methods is a term coined as a counter-point to virtual methods, which typically digitize existing methods and port them onto the Web. Digital Methods, contrariwise, seek to learn from the methods built into the dominant devices online, and repurpose them for social and cultural research. That is, the challenge is to study the info-web and the social web with the tools that organize them.
There is a general protocol to digital methods. At the outset stock is taken of the natively digital objects that are available (links, tags, threads, etc.) and how devices such as search engines make use of them. Can the device techniques be repurposed, for example by remixing the digital objects they take as inputs?

Having noticed the great discrepancy between bot activity in English and the other language versions of Wikipedia, we became interested in the level of bot activity per language.

For the ppl of Iran - #iranelection RT is an exercise in transforming the supposed banality of Twitter into a machine that recounts events on the ground and in social media. #iranelection RT is a collection of all the tweets that have been tagged #iranelection from the first one on10 June up to 30 June 2009, some 650,000 in all. The most “retweeted” tweets (RTs) have been filtered and organised chronologically, as opposed to the reverse chronology that Twitter uses. In “reversed realtime” the most significant #iranelection retweets show the urgency and the emotion of those twenty days in June, when the tensions on the streets and the coverage in the media were at their height. The collection of tweets also shows how tweeters respond to what is happening online and on the ground. Tweets reporting important websites blocked are fol- lowed up by proxies being offered. Accounts of police using pepper spray are followed up by links to websites with first aid information.
Whereas the host domain is available, the Persian section of BBC News is blocked.
