This document discusses how digital tools and resources are changing humanities scholarship. The WorldMap platform http://worldmap.harvard.edu is the largest open source collaborative mapping system in the world, with over 13,000 map layers contributed by thousands of users from Harvard and around the world. Researchers may upload large spatial datasets to the system, create data-driven visualizations, edit data, and control access. Users may keep their data private, share it in groups, or publish to the world.
The user base is interdisciplinary, including scholars from the humanities, social sciences, sciences, public health, design, planning, etc. All are able to access, view, and use one another’s data, either online, via map services, or by downloading.
Current work is underway to create and maintain a global registry of map services and take us a step closer to one-stop-access for public geospatial data. Another project is working on tools to support the visualization of spatial datasets with over a billion features. Current collaborations are underway with groups inside Harvard, such as Dataverse, HarvardX, and various departments, and with groups outside Harvard, such as Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania. Major additional contributors to the underlying source code include the WorldBank, the U.S. State Department, and the United Nations.

The report is the culmination of a one-year multi-strand research project, and examines how users of the museums and libraries at the University of Oxford find the information they need (known as “resource discovery”), current practices among other institutions, and trends and possibilities for resource discovery in the future.
Athenaeum21 led the end-user research and needs assessment portion of the project, and then led the synthesis and analysis of the data across all of the research strands, making the recommendations and writing the final report. The report defines the resource discovery strategy for the University for the next 5 years.

Librarians and catalogers are now in the position of being not only docents of collections, but innovators in digital research, and this opens up a number of opportunities for retooling library discovery tools. His presentation will presented survey of methods and projects that have extended traditional catalogs of libraries and museums into online collections of digital objects in the field of humanities -- focusing on projects that use historical place names and geographic identifiers for linked open data will be discussed.

Engaging Information Professionals in the Process of Authoritative Interlinki...Lucy McKenna
Through the use of Linked Data (LD), Libraries, Archives and Museums (LAMs) have the potential to expose their collections to a larger audience and to allow for more efficient user searches. Despite this, relatively few LAMs have invested in LD projects and the majority of these display limited interlinking across datasets and institutions. A survey was conducted to understand Information Professionals' (IPs') position with regards to LD, with a particular focus on the interlinking problem. The survey was completed by 185 librarians, archivists, metadata cataloguers and researchers. Results indicated that, when interlinking, IPs find the process of ontology and property selection to be particularly challenging, and LD tooling to be technologically complex and unsuitable for their needs.
Our research is focused on developing an authoritative interlinking framework for LAMs with a view to increasing IP engagement in the linking process. Our framework will provide a set of standards to facilitate IPs in the selection of link types, specifically when linking local resources to authorities. The framework will include guidelines for authority, ontology and property selection, and for adding provenance data. A user-interface will be developed which will direct IPs through the resource interlinking process as per our framework. Although there are existing tools in this domain, our framework differs in that it will be designed with the needs and expertise of IPs in mind. This will be achieved by involving IPs in the design and evaluation of the framework. A mock-up of the interface has already been tested and adjustments have been made based on results. We are currently working on developing a minimal viable product so as to allow for further testing of the framework. We will present our updated framework, interface, and proposed interlinking solutions.

In this seminar we have introduced many lesser known, but potentially even more useful tools to scholars such as the particularly powerful Google Fusion Tables and Google Trends to the simple but powerful Google Keep among others. This just scrapes the surface with a series of tools that evolve everyday and with new tools emerging and other fading away after contributing to our scholarly imagination.
Mapping your data can help to provide new insights on your research findings. However, many scholars are put off by the steep learning curve demanded by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) such as ArcGIS from ESRI. New and simple tools have become available that offer sophisticated output without extensive training. In fact, tools such as Google Maps, Google Earth, Open Street Map among others can offer immediate returns in a matter of hours where tasks in the past required, weeks, months and even years of training.

Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
