Abstract
In October 2015, a team of researchers and students conducted a rapid inventory of Sint Eustatius, a 21 km2 island in the Lesser Antilles. A sampling protocol targeted vascular and non-vascular plants, lichen, vertebrates, gastropods, butterflies, and selected megadiverse arthropods (spiders, ants, beetles, and true bugs) across a gradient of habitats and anthropogenic impacts. For megadiverse groups, not all species were determined using formal scientific names. Nevertheless, all were assigned persistent identifiers linked to digital image libraries and DNA sequences as prescribed by the cyberdiversity approach.
We contrast the cyberdiversity approach with a recent broad spectrum taxonomic inventory of the Caribbean island of Montserrat. The Montserrat inventory targeted plants, vertebrates, and arthropods with emphasis on beetles. Montserrat exemplifies the asymmetries that make the challenge of building knowledge about megadiverse groups different from inventories of groups like plants and vertebrates, a problem referred to as the taxonomic impediment. Of the 718 beetle species sampled, only a few can be confidently associated with a valid scientific name due to deficiencies in the literature and limited comparative work across Caribbean islands. Unfortunately, the situation following the Montserrat inventory is only marginally better. A partial list of beetle names was produced and specimens were vouchered in an accessible research collection. But determining which beetle species present on Montserrat might be shared with samples from other islands remains a daunting challenge. By using the cyberdiversity approach, we make it much more likely that independent researchers will be able to reconcile their collections with ours.

This study assessed the biodiversity of finfish within and around the Admiral Cockburn Land and Sea National Park MPA near South Caicos. Underwater visual surveys were conducted at 6 sites inside and 6 sites outside the MPA boundary. Species abundance and diversity were calculated using density scores and Shannon-Wiener indices. Results found no significant difference in diversity between sites inside and outside the MPA. This suggests the MPA was not effectively protecting biodiversity, possibly due to being established without scientific planning or lack of connectivity between protected areas. While density scores provided abundance data, Shannon-Wiener indices were needed to accurately compare diversity between sites for MPA assessment.

Averting a biodiversity crisis: AmphibiaWeb addresses the new Bsal threat
This document summarizes the threat posed by the amphibian disease Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) to global salamander populations. Bsal was recently discovered in Europe and causes die-offs of fire salamanders. It poses a high risk of being introduced to North America through the international pet trade of Asian fire-bellied newts, which may act as reservoirs. The disease has suitable climate conditions to establish in parts of the US with high salamander diversity and endemism. Monitoring programs and restrictions on the wildlife trade are recommended to prevent an outbreak comparable to the global spread of the related disease Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis.

The Montserrat inventory targeted plants, vertebrates, and arthropods with emphasis on beetles. Montserrat exemplifies the asymmetries that make the challenge of building knowledge about megadiverse groups different from inventories of groups like plants and vertebrates, a problem referred to as the taxonomic impediment. Of the 718 beetle species sampled, only a few can be confidently associated with a valid scientific name due to deficiencies in the literature and limited comparative work across Caribbean islands. Unfortunately, the situation following the Montserrat inventory is only marginally better. A partial list of beetle names was produced and specimens were vouchered in an accessible research collection. But determining which beetle species present on Montserrat might be shared with samples from other islands remains a daunting challenge. By using the cyberdiversity approach, we make it much more likely that independent researchers will be able to reconcile their collections with ours.

This study assessed the biodiversity of finfish within and around the Admiral Cockburn Land and Sea National Park MPA near South Caicos. Underwater visual surveys were conducted at 6 sites inside and 6 sites outside the MPA boundary. Species abundance and diversity were calculated using density scores and Shannon-Wiener indices. Results found no significant difference in diversity between sites inside and outside the MPA. This suggests the MPA was not effectively protecting biodiversity, possibly due to being established without scientific planning or lack of connectivity between protected areas. While density scores provided abundance data, Shannon-Wiener indices were needed to accurately compare diversity between sites for MPA assessment.

Averting a biodiversity crisis: AmphibiaWeb addresses the new Bsal threat
This document summarizes the threat posed by the amphibian disease Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) to global salamander populations. Bsal was recently discovered in Europe and causes die-offs of fire salamanders. It poses a high risk of being introduced to North America through the international pet trade of Asian fire-bellied newts, which may act as reservoirs. The disease has suitable climate conditions to establish in parts of the US with high salamander diversity and endemism. Monitoring programs and restrictions on the wildlife trade are recommended to prevent an outbreak comparable to the global spread of the related disease Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis.

A new atlas, providing the most thorough audit of marine life in the Southern Ocean, is published this week by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). Leading marine biologists and oceanographers from all over the world spent the last four years compiling everything they know about ocean species from microbes to whales. It’s the first time that such an effort has been undertaken since 1969 when the American Society of Geography published its Antarctic Map Folio Series.
In an unprecedented international collaboration 147 scientists from 91 institutions across 22 countries (Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the USA) combined their expertise and knowledge to produce the new Biogeographic Atlas of the Southern Ocean. More than 9000 species are recorded, ranging from microbes to whales. Hundreds of thousands of records show the extent of scientific knowledge on the distribution of life in the Southern Ocean. In 66 chapters, the scientists examine the evolution, physical environment, genetics and possible impact of climate change on marine organisms in the region.
Chief editor, Claude De Broyer, of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, said: “This is the first time that all the records of the unique Antarctic marine biodiversity, from the very beginnings of Antarctic exploration in the days of Captain Cook, have been compiled, analysed and mapped by the scientific community. It has resulted in a comprehensive atlas and an accessible database of useful information on the conservation of Antarctic marine life.”

Major threats to aquatic biodiversity include habitat loss, invasive species, pollution, climate change, and overexploitation, which are exacerbated by human population growth. The greatest marine biodiversity is found at coral reefs, estuaries, and on the deep ocean floor. While protections for whales have led to recovery of some populations, others are still threatened by illegal hunting. Invasive species like the Asian swamp eel and lionfish degrade ecosystems, while activities such as agriculture, development, and waste dumping pollute waterways and oceans. Climate change poses a growing threat through sea level rise, warming, and acidification. Overfishing has driven many fish species toward extinction.

Fish are useful ecological indicators because they integrate ecosystem health over large spatial and temporal scales, are sensitive to disturbances like hydrologic alteration, and their biology is often well understood. Developing fish-based indicators is challenging due to the difficulty and expense of effectively sampling fish populations. Setting reference conditions for unimpaired sites is also difficult, especially in areas with widespread human impacts. Two examples of fish-based indicators are the Fish-IBI used in the US and Europe, and Australia's Sustainable Rivers Audit which reports on fish assemblages in the Murray-Darling Basin. Both evaluate community composition, population status, and individual health.

Federal legislation (Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act, 2016) requires the Oakdale and South San Joaquin Irrigation Districts and NOAA Fisheries to jointly establish a multi-year research program in the Stanislaus River to investigate whether predator removals are an effective strategy to improve the survival of juvenile salmonids. Initial project goals included efforts to: (1) gather data on the abundance, composition, and distribution of both native and nonnative fish predators in the Stanislaus River; (2) gather age composition and diet information from fish predators; and, (3) implement and assess removals of piscivorous fishes using a Before-After-Control-Impact study design. The sampling design allows for information to be gathered on both temporal and spatial aspects of predation in the Stanislaus River with randomly selected sampling locations revisited multiple times. Data will be analyzed using a robust design framework to account for the ability of tagged predators to move into and out of the sampled locations (i.e., an open population). Data from the study can provide insight on how predation risk (e.g., the number of Chinook salmon consumed by predators) may change through time and space as well as how predator populations may change throughout the study period.

Biodiversity Information Networks: dataflows for interdisciplinary science
In this paper, we present SCAR’s Marine Biodiversity Information Network (SCAR-MarBIN, www.scarmarbin.be), introduce the new Antarctic Biodiversity Information Facility (ANTABIF, HYPERLINK "http://www.biodiversity.aq" www.biodiversity.aq) and argue that it has become vital and practicable to support an international mechanism for the exchange of scientific data. This approach allows to integrate large data volumes, and helps modern biologists to face a “data deluge” using new techniques and technologies currently developed in the field of biodiversity informatics. Biodiversity is an example of data-intensive science, and certainly requires an interdisciplinary, scalable approach to address complex systemic problems such as environmental change and its impact on marine ecosystems. This paper discusses the experience of data scientists seeking to collect, curate, and provide data during the timeframe of the International Polar Year. The data content of the SCAR-MarBIN and ANTABIF holdings has been explored, and recent published analyses are used to illustrate concrete examples. We find that while technology is a critical factor to address this dimension, the greater challenges are more socio-cultural than technical. We describe a vision of discoverable, open, linked, useful, and safe data and suggest the need for a rapid socio-technical evolution in the overall science data ecosystem.
