What is Discourse?
A use of language or speech in a social
context.
A set of communication between two
persons.
A conversation
An interview
A poem or an text

What is good in one culture may
not be good in the other.

Wife : Are you reading a newspaper?
Husband : No, I am playing football.

• Meaning does not necessarily come
from words, sentences and text.
• Meaning depends on the who the
speakers is, when the speech is uttered,
in which social, cultural background the
speech is delivered.
• Hence, discourse analysis includes
social, historical, cultural and political
contexts in which the language is used.

Waste disposal has become like the proverbial one-eyed monster that continues to bedevil and threatens to maraud us of our priciest possesion – our health. These heaps of refuse could be found in apartments, highways, markets, streets; also some underdeveloped plot of lands have been turned to dumping sites for many household. There are several factors that cause poor waste disposal management, such as : Over population, when the population of any municipal is more than the existing facilities, there is bound to be struggles with waste management. Human resources, human resources is the total number of able and capable working population who are skilled enough to carry out their organization responsibilities. Therefore, a dearth in workers skilled in the management of waste could portend grave environmental consequences.

ABSTRACT This research analyzes indirectness in selected utterances of characters in Dul Johnson’s Melancholia. It aims to identify how characters in the play deployed direct and indirect speech act in their conversations. It also examines the effects of the indirect speech act on the hearers; and the motives of the characters for deploying speech act in their conversations. Meanwhile, this study adopts Searle’s Speech Act Theory (SAT) 1969. The researcher finds out that characters deployed direct and indirect speech act in their conversations with one another. It also reveals that the speaker’s utterances have effect(s) on the hearers; and that the speakers have various motives for deploying speech act. The research finally concludes that language users use speech act in their daily conversation with one another for various motives to pass across their information.
