7. Developing Confidence:
Your Speech Class
*Stage fright: anxiety over the prospect of giving a
speech in front of an audience.
*Adrenaline: a hormone released into the
bloodstream in response to physical or mental
stress.
*Visualization: mental imaging in which speakers
vividly picture themselves giving a successful
presentation.
• Nervousness is normal
• Positive nervousness: controlled nervousness that
help energize a speaker for her or his presentation.

• Acquire speaking experience “The more you learn public speaking
and the more speeches you give, the less threatening speechmaking
will become”

Critical Thinking
• Critical thinking is a matter of logic- spotting the
weaknesses in other people’s arguments and
avoiding them in your own.
• Critical thinking focused, organized about such
things as the logical relationships among ideas,
the soundness of evidence, and the differences
between fact and opinion.
• The powers of critical thinking you develop in
researching and organizing your speeches can be
applied in many forms of communication,
including meetings and group projects.

• There are seven elements
involved in speech
communication:
1. Speaker
2. Message
3. Channel
4. Listener
5. Feedback
6. Interference
7. Situation

11. Seven elements involved in speech
communication
1. Speaker: the person who is presenting an oral message to a listener.
2. Message: whatever speaker communicates to someone else.
3. Channel: the means by which a message is communicated.
4. Listener: the person who receives the speaker’s message.
5. Feedback: the messages, usually nonverbal, sent from a listener to
a speaker.
6. Interference: anything that impedes the communication of a
message. Interference can be external or internal to listener.
7. Situation: the time and place in which speech communication
occurs.

in a Multicultural
World
• Cultural diversity
Factors might affect the responses of your listeners and adapt your
message accordingly.
• Avoiding ethnocentrism
• Adapt to listeners diverse cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.
* Ethnocentrism: the belief that one’s own group or culture is superior
to all other groups or cultures.
