2. PRESTIGE OIL SPILL
The Prestige disaster was an oil spill in Galicia caused
by the sinking of the Prestige oil tanker in 2002. The
accident affected 2000 kilometers of Spanish, French
and Portuguese coast.
On November 13, the Prestige oil tanker crashed in a
storm while it was traveling loaded with 77,000 tons of
fuel oil. All that amount of material that was spilled in
the sea caused many of the animals that lived in a
radius of one and a half kilometers (1´5km) to die.
Killing almost 7 million fish and marine species.
The oil spill of the Prestige has been considered the
third most expensive accident in history, as the
cleanup of the spill and the sealing of the ship had a
cost of 12 billion dollars.

The Beared Vulture disappeared from
the mountains of northern Spain in the
60s, because of the intense poisoning
campaigns. The Francoists wanted to
extinguish all kinds of harmful animals.
The causes that led them in a critical
situation are the followings:
● Habitat destruction.
● The poaching.
● The presence of humans in their
nests.
