OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson I expect you to
define;
I. disaster and disaster management
II. Causes of disasters
III. Classification of disaster
IV.Effects of disaster
V. Prevention of disasters
Definition Terms
Disaster
Is any occurrence that causes damage ,ecological
disruption ,loss of human life and deterioration of
human life on a scale sufficient to warrant an extra
ordinary response from outside the affected
community area(WHO).
Disaster management;
Is managerial function charged with
creating the frame work within which the
communities reduce vulnerability to hazards
Classification of Disasters
• Natural disasters
• Man-made disasters
 Natural disasters-occur as the results of
environmental forces beyond human control.
They tend to be accepted as unfortunate but
inevitable e.g floods, earth quakes on land,
tsunamis in ocean
 Man-made disasters-Are caused by human
activities on earth surface e.g explosions
,fires , crushes nuclear reactants wars
Causes of Disasters
• Tectonic shifts-heat from radioactive
process within the planet interior.
• Deforestation
• Soil erosion
• Flooding
• Ocean currents
• Pollution
• Global warming
Effects of Disasters
• Death
• Destruction of property
• Displacement of people and their
property
• Disruption of normal livelihoods
• Leads to trauma
Prevention of Disasters
• Afforestation
• Know the warning signs e.g in buildings
that are to collapse
• Legislation, preventing buildings in flood
prone areas
• Erecting of lightning arresters in buildings
• Creation of awareness on incoming
dangers eg floods
deforestation
floods
Global warming
Water pollution
Soil erosion
Collapsing of buildings
