direction, we don’t say go right or left. For that purpose, we use cardinal
directions. Cardinal Directions are points on a compass that helps us navigate or
find directions. We will know more about a compass later in this worksheet.
The four cardinal directions are North, East, West and South. These directions
often get symbolised by their initial letters as N, E, W and S, respectively.

Whenever we are unable to find our way, cardinal directions can help us
navigate. To understand the directions around us, we make use of a compass. It
is a tool that helps us figure out directions.

figure out where East, South and West is. A compass can be extremely helpful in
places that are not thickly populated and you are alone. Such places include
mountains, forests, oceans. Ships and boats can only rely on compass directions
to reach their destinations because an open sea doesn’t have any paths or
roads.

A map is a drawing of a part of the Earth’s surface or a drawing of all of the
Earth’s surface. A map gets used to understand which place lies where. Maps
can be of different kinds, focusing on different features of our planet. For
example, there can be a general world map (as shown below) or a map of
some specific country or a map that only shows rivers of the world.

A map and a compass together can help you travel to any place you want as
the compass would give you directions, and the map would help you identify
where you need to go.
