What Has Got The Best Quality?

                                     FilmvsDigital
- Film takes much more work - Digital cameras give much better and more
- Film used in landscape photography, has more accurate colors than print film.
resolution. - Digital cameras give much better results than 35mm
                                                 print film
Film Size
Biggest

The wider the film in mm –
                                  the better the picture
                                  quality (resolution)

Smallest The quality of 35mm film is about 20 million
               pixels
Digital Resolution
256x256 - Found on very cheap cameras, This is 65,000 total pixels.

640x480- This resolution is ideal for e-mailing pictures or posting pictures on a Web site.

1216x912- This is a "megapixel" image size -- 1,109,000 total pixels -- good for printing pictures.

1600x1200- With almost 2 million total pixels, this is "high resolution.”

2240x1680- Found on 4 megapixel cameras , this allows even larger printed photos, with good quality for prints up to 16x20 inches.

4064x2704- A top-of-the-line digital camera with 11.1 megapixels takes pictures at this resolution. At this setting, you can create 13.5x9 inch
prints with no loss of picture quality

2.1 megapixel means there should be at least
                                                                            2,100,000 pixels.
Aspect Ratio
The aspect ratio of an image describes
the proportional relationship between its
width and its height.

The most common aspect ratios used
today in movie theaters are 1.85 and
2.39. Two common video graphic aspect
ratios are 4:3 (1.33), the universal video
format of the 20th century and 16:9
(1.77), universal for high-definition
television and European digital television.
Other cinema and video aspect ratios
exist, but are used infrequently.
Standard Definition vs High Definition
    STANDARD HD
 - Either PAL or NTSC - High resolution compared to
 - Lower quality than HD standard
 - Aspect ratio either 16:9 or 4:3 - Has a smoother motion and more natural
                                     colors
                                     - Surround sound, and the ability to allow a
variety of input devices to work together
Capture Formats
Formats
            Computers
            ENCODE
            video in lots
            of different
            formats.
          These are
            common
            CONSUMER
            types.
The right Digital Formats
• Important to use the right format to maintain
  quality.
• Some editing systems cant accurately edit
with certain formats due to problems caused
  by compression
Online Vs Offline
• Online editing uses the highest possible
  quality to edit.
• The takes large amount of computer power
and storage – when working with very large
formats (2K/4K) not a good idea.
Offline Editing
• Import the footage at a lower level of quality
• Create an EDL (edit decision list) using the
  software
• Re-import the footage used in the edit at high
  quality ready for final export.
• Can speed up working.
• Used to be used more.
• Modern computers can deal with 1080p footage
  online.
• VFX operators still use offline/ online processes.
Linear vs Non Linear
• Film from a camera is linear
Non linear
• Digital Video editing is non linear
• You can reorder the footage and make
changes at any time without any major
  problem
• You can go back and change an edit easily
• You can make fine adjustments
• You can create digital transitions and effects
  easily and quickly
Tapes vs Hard Discs
• Tapes are not commonly used in Digital Video
  cameras to record information
• These have almost all been replaced by hard
  disk drives / memory cards
• The process of digitizing is faster.
• The files are less secure!
