Over the last few years, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have had a huge impact on the scale of higher education teaching and learning globally. In 2018, 101 million MOOC learners participated in 11,000+ courses created by over 900 universities in partnerships with dozens of platform providers (Shah 2018). Higher Education institutions are using MOOCs to innovate, experiment with and strategise the future of online learning (Ferguson et al. 2016), (Fox 2016), (Hollands & Tirthali 2014).
The FutureLearn Academic Network (FLAN) connects staff involved with MOOCs at FutureLearn partner institutions, enabling them to share research and explore shared research opportunities. Understanding the impact of MOOCs on learning and learners is one of 12 priority areas recently identified by FLAN members as needing more research (FLAN 2019).
In this panel session, three FLAN members will share their research and lessons learnt from using MOOCs to widen the impact of teaching and learning on specific groups of learners and learning communities: bringing together experts and learners from around the world for citizen science activities for learning, using the FutureLearn approach to digital pedagogy – conversational learning – to support teaching and learning on international, closed and formally accredited courses, and reaching across traditional professional training boundaries to those who otherwise be unlikely to be able to participate in new approaches to team-based training.
• Professor Eileen Scanlon, Open University. Citizen science platforms at the Open University such as nQuire and iSpot have been used in FutureLearn. I will contribute a perspective on the role that such activities contribute to learning science.
• Professor Rebecca Ferguson, Open University. A discussion of the use of conversational learning on an international closed and formally accredited FutureLearn course. The course includes work around Sustainable Development Goal 4 to “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”.
• Dr Daksha Patel & Dr Astrid Leck, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. This talk will discuss the design of a FutureLearn MOOC aimed at addressing the global health challenge of trachoma elimination, and an evaluation – using Wenger et al.’s (2011) Value Creation Framework – of its impact on practice for trachoma elimination in endemic countries.

This presentation will showcase CDU’s processes, innovative approaches, and lessons learnt. As a bonus, you will also see inside the Memory MOOC’s visually stunning “Memory Palace” and see how learning Accounting was brought to life through interactive video and branching scenarios in the “Who’s Counting” MOOC.

The presentation will outline the systematic use of the Blackboard Wiki tool, for a large class (120) consisting of external and internal students, to engage in Group work with success. The added benefit was an enhanced student capacity to engage with digital media in their professional role. This UQ post-graduate course has received annual teaching awards which have reflected high student satisfaction in the evaluations.
Our case study illustrates use of the Wiki tool to enable collaboration within a group of 6 (three from internal and 3 from external mode) to write a formal electronic Report on a national health system that could be used by that government to strengthen its health system.
In a practical sense, participants will be able to access the framework of assessment, the tool set up and the marking criteria, along with student samples and student evaluation.
Advanced commenting capabilities using the Moodle Media Collection activity -...Blackboard APAC
The University of New South Wales Australia has developed advanced commenting features for the Moodle Media collection activity. This allows comments and likes to be added to audio, video and image files in Moodle Media Collections. With audio and video files, comments can be added to specific points in the media item's timeline.
Different comment types allow you to control who sees your comments. This includes the whole course, just you or a person you send feedback to and you.
A ceLTIc project webinar. The ceLTIc project shows how to enable LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) connectors to build a flexible infrastructure.This session will discuss how the JISC-funded ceLTIc:sharing project is evaluating the use of LTI to provide a shared service for institutions interested in evaluating WebPA. It will include a demonstration of linking to the tool from Blackboard Learn 9 and Moodle, as well as how the outcomes service along with the unofficial memberships and setting extensions are being used to enhance this integration in a VLE-independent way.

The University of Wollongong and Blackboard have collaborated to develop an exemplary course for staff that demonstrates best practice for digital learning within Moodle. In 2015, the University implemented a set of minimum expectations and good practice elements called the Digital Learning Thresholds (DLT). The DLT strategy supports the principle that all students will have access to digital learning and both staff and students have clear expectations about the use of digital learning within the curriculum. This session will be co-presented by Lynley Clark from Blackboard and Denise Spanswick from the University of Wollongong (UOW). It will discuss how Lynley and a small team of Educational Designers from UOW worked together to incorporate the DLT elements into examples of activities and resources within a Moodle site with the aim of providing a model or exemplar to develop staff’s understanding of digital learning in a way that could more easily translate to their own subject development and an exceptional learning experience for UOW students.

With the increasing focus on graduate employability within higher education, ePortfolio activities present an opportunity to work with students on reflective practice and digital fluency for lifelong learning. However, universities must invest in building teachers’ capacity to confidently embed portfolio activities through the use of technologies. In this presentation, we will describe how we designed trials of two new ePortfolio platforms to build staff capacity, by incorporating these trials into courses for teaching staff and educational designers. We will also discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by such innovation projects through the lens of staff development.

With the recent redevelopment of postgraduate courses in project management for the School of Civil Engineering and the Built Environment, new challenges were faced to make units more inclusive of a variety of enrolment preferences. The short term ambitions for the courses included developing units that are delivered both facetoface, and entirely online and have the potential to be scaled to meet the growing demand for continuing professional education. To ensure that students could join either facetoface or online offerings of the same units, the implementation team brought internal and external cohorts together on the same unit sites on Blackboard. The units are currently under evaluation but some early learnings may provide insight into new approaches to blended learning, and how these approaches have facilitated new ways of teaching and learning through tentative academic culture change.

This session includes case studies themes around the creation of online communities for learners. Claire Beecroft and Luke Miller (ScHARR) use their extensive experience of delivering distance learning courses to discuss what motivates students within an online learning environment, and how the development of ‘teacher immediacy behaviours’, and of innovative online pedagogy, can help to maintain establish and sustain genuine relationships between online learners and teachers. Sarah Moore and Layla Croll (Academic and Learning Services) will introduce colleagues to the skills of facilitating discussion among learners in an online environment such as a MOOC or a distance learning course. It will start with a short exercise that raises some of the challenges of facilitating discussion about experiences of working with learners from across the world on a MOOC.

Encore, the new name for Lecture Capture at the University, is a service that will be expanded and improved for the forthcoming term, further increasing consistency and accessibility for students through availability of recorded lectures. This session sees Louise Robson (Biomedical Science) give an overview of the journey she has taken with lecture capture at her department, the vital role it has played in her learning and teaching, and the benefits it has brought her students. James Slack and Laura McNally (CiCS) will give overviews of the system and how it works, and details of some advanced features (including classroom engagement). There will also be chance to ask the presenters both pedagogical and technical questions about lecture capture and its implementation at The University of Sheffield.
MOLE Refresh - What is it and what does it mean to me?telshef
This bitesize session looks at MOLE Refresh, the new way courses on MOLE, the University’s VLE, will be created for the forthcoming term. It will look at why the changes have taken place, the new templates that are being used, and the steps to take to get your courses ready for the 2017/18 term

This workshop will explore ways of harnessing the power of your mobile device to create high quality, engaging media content. Learn some practical tips on how to use your smartphone or tablet to record video, and discover how this can be used in conjunction with our new digital media hosting system - Kaltura.
Virtual Reality offers the opportunity to create highly immersive experiences and can transport learners to different environments such that they genuinely feel like they are there. Already there are innovative examples of practice taking place across the institution. The cost to create and view these experiences, previously meant that this method of teaching has been limited to those with ample resources. In this session you will design a VR experience and discover how, with no technical expertise you can create Virtual Reality experiences for your students. You will also hear from students who have been creating VR experiences to educate others about their discipline.
The Crys-TEL maze requires attendees to complete a number of challenges in groups to attempt to figure out a pressing learning and teaching issue. Along the way, participants will experience different learning and delivery styles, with the aim of promoting appropriate use of technology, and take some ideas / information that they can feed into their teaching. 2. The project
• To produce a short online course to help final year science students
communicate their research in ‘lay summary’ format
• Lay summaries will be assessed as part of their final year projects in their
department. There is an option for interested students to put forward their
summaries for possible inclusion in a WP science magazine aimed at 11-15
year olds.
• Support our students in meeting the AchieveMore Final Year requirements
in a valuable and sustainable way
• By the end of the course the learners will be able to (1) know why
communication is important (2) identify people outside the university who
may be interested in their research (3) write a <200 word lay summary to
communicate their research project outside the university.
3. The aims
• Produce an engaging one-hour MOOC-style resource which can be
added to the final year project materials for Science students
• Choose a platform/format
• Produce a coherent mix of short videos, articles, images, quizzes,
activities that encourages active engagement.
• Equip me with the skills and confidence to make/maintain the
material after the retreat has ended

What hints or tips would you give to someone approaching a similar project with the support of a retreat or without?
It was called Team Liz – a bit unnerving
It was big because half the people couldn’t make the second day - but it meant that we worked on content.
Other people came too to check what we were producing would be useful for the whole faculty.
Everyone was motivated and worked really hard. We built the course which includes three short videos (2-3 minutes), quizzes guided activities and community discussions. Mostly I learnt to embed things into MOLE (e.g. google quizzes and padlet) and the flexibility that you have with.
Importantly, after the students finished the course (in under 60 minutes), they will be nearly finished with their task of completing the lay summary for their project
(catching and keeping your learner’s attention is a big part of the challenge for distance learning - also)
Thik about the priority from the digi side
Think about promoting good practise outside your event – it is not just about your module
Slacker didn’t work very well for prep before hand but my meeting with Anna before hand did – consider meeting the team before hand and/or requesting the appropriate expertise.
