The project
• To produce a short online course to help final year science students
communicate their research in ‘lay summary’ format
• Lay summaries will be assessed as part of their final year projects in their
department. There is an option for interested students to put forward their
summaries for possible inclusion in a WP science magazine aimed at 11-15
year olds.
• Support our students in meeting the AchieveMore Final Year requirements
in a valuable and sustainable way
• By the end of the course the learners will be able to (1) know why
communication is important (2) identify people outside the university who
may be interested in their research (3) write a <200 word lay summary to
communicate their research project outside the university.
The aims
• Produce an engaging one-hour MOOC-style resource which can be
added to the final year project materials for Science students
• Choose a platform/format
• Produce a coherent mix of short videos, articles, images, quizzes,
activities that encourages active engagement.
• Equip me with the skills and confidence to make/maintain the
material after the retreat has ended

imagined – but it worked)

Don’t worry about the tech
side – that’s not your job
Have clear realistic aims, visions &

and be prepared to do a little work before hand on preparing
the content

  • 1. Who cares? Communicating with stakeholders Liz Alvey & Andrew Lewis Molecular Biology and Biotechnology e.alvey@sheffield.ac.uk

The project • To produce a short online course to help final year science students communicate their research in ‘lay summary’ format • Lay summaries will be assessed as part of their final year projects in their department. There is an option for interested students to put forward their summaries for possible inclusion in a WP science magazine aimed at 11-15 year olds. • Support our students in meeting the AchieveMore Final Year requirements in a valuable and sustainable way • By the end of the course the learners will be able to (1) know why communication is important (2) identify people outside the university who may be interested in their research (3) write a <200 word lay summary to communicate their research project outside the university.

The aims • Produce an engaging one-hour MOOC-style resource which can be added to the final year project materials for Science students • Choose a platform/format • Produce a coherent mix of short videos, articles, images, quizzes, activities that encourages active engagement. • Equip me with the skills and confidence to make/maintain the material after the retreat has ended

  • 6. What did I get out of it? • A near-complete short online course • Learnt to think about curriculum like a MOOC-maker • Experience of tech-mediated teamwork. Trello, anyone? • Made my first YouTube video • Developed my MOLE skills and met new teaching tools (e.g. Padlet) • Generally met handy contacts across the University • A LOT OF BISCUITS
  • 7. Hints and Tips Identify the problem you’re trying to solve! Be open-minded about the solutions (a MOLE course was considerably less glamourous than I’d imagined – but it worked) Consider seeking a collaborator Don’t worry about the tech side – that’s not your job Have clear realistic aims, visions & priorities and be prepared to do a little work before hand on preparing the content

  2. What was your project? What did you do in the retreat? How was the retreat format for you? How have you developed your project after the retreat? What hints or tips would you give to someone approaching a similar project with the support of a retreat or without?
  3. It was called Team Liz – a bit unnerving It was big because half the people couldn’t make the second day - but it meant that we worked on content. Other people came too to check what we were producing would be useful for the whole faculty.
  4. Everyone was motivated and worked really hard. We built the course which includes three short videos (2-3 minutes), quizzes guided activities and community discussions. Mostly I learnt to embed things into MOLE (e.g. google quizzes and padlet) and the flexibility that you have with. Importantly, after the students finished the course (in under 60 minutes), they will be nearly finished with their task of completing the lay summary for their project
  5. (catching and keeping your learner’s attention is a big part of the challenge for distance learning - also) Thik about the priority from the digi side
  6. Think about promoting good practise outside your event – it is not just about your module Slacker didn’t work very well for prep before hand but my meeting with Anna before hand did – consider meeting the team before hand and/or requesting the appropriate expertise.
