 There is no universal set of rules have been written for uses of devices in
schools, rather there are varying rules are set by educators.
 When students see adults using technology inappropriately they can
assume it’s the norm and thus this leads to ineffective use of technology
in the classroom.
STRATERGIES TO COMBAT THIS AS EDUCATORS:
Be consistent with rules established by the school
Model appropriate use, inside and outside the classroom!
Keep update with the technology your students are using to understand
whether or not they are using it appropriately.
EDUCATION
 Technology infused teaching is becoming more common place with each coming
year- becoming as transparent as the chalk board and pencil.
 HOWEVER teaching students how to effectively use this technology has not
grown accordingly.
 Instead of teaching their students to find credible resources through their
devices they are instead giving them tasks where students can simply “Google”
the answer.
STRATERGIES TO COMBAT THIS AS EDUCATORS:
Create activities and exercises that teach students the skill of research and then
allow them to share that information in a responsible fashion.
Encourage students to come up with their own alternate uses for digital
technology such as using it a means to connect with other students through
discussion boards.
Teach information literacy on identifying, accessing, applying and creating
information.
COMMERCE
 Online purchasing is rapidly becoming the norm thus should be
something students need to be taught to understand if it
educations goal to produce literate citizens.
 Students can be unware of the phenomenon of identity theft and
can even fail to realize the negative consequences of poor online
purchasing and impulse buying.
 With ease of access students can also be unaware of unscrupulous
sellers and well targeted marketing.
STRATERGIES TO COMBAT THIS AS EDUCATORS:
Inform students about these dangers and encourage them to research
the credibility of a company before purchasing goods online.
Teach them strategies to protect their identity online such as the
danger of giving personal information online and the danger of over
sharing.
RIGHTS
 When creating or publishing anything digitally students need to
be aware of copyright restrictions and need to also be aware
that if they create content they have the same rights as other
creators.
 Many students violate copyright on regularly simply because
they are completely unware they are doing so.
STRATERGIES TO COMBAT THIS AS EDUCATORS:
Inform students of the negative consequences of violating copy
right issues and educate them on how to ensure they do not violate
them.
Engage students with discussion about copyright issues inside and
outside of the classroom such as illegally obtaining music and
movies.
SECURITY
 Students should be taught about the importance of virus
protection, firewalls and off-site storage as more sensitive
information is stored electronically.
 Unfortunately some educators do not believe it is important to
regularly update software to ensure protection and thus will
never teach the importance of this to their students and may
even lose students work if their device becomes infected.
STRATERGIES TO COMBAT THIS AS EDUCATORS:
Teach students to back-up their data to ensure that all is not lost
if they device does become infected.
Teach students how to conduct regular checks for viruses and
other software intrusions.
Research what your school does to provide protection and possible
outside digital harm.

ETIQUETTE  There is no universal set of rules have been written for uses of devices in schools, rather there are varying rules are set by educators.  When students see adults using technology inappropriately they can assume it’s the norm and thus this leads to ineffective use of technology in the classroom. STRATERGIES TO COMBAT THIS AS EDUCATORS: Be consistent with rules established by the school Model appropriate use, inside and outside the classroom! Keep update with the technology your students are using to understand whether or not they are using it appropriately.
  • 3. EDUCATION  Technology infused teaching is becoming more common place with each coming year- becoming as transparent as the chalk board and pencil.  HOWEVER teaching students how to effectively use this technology has not grown accordingly.  Instead of teaching their students to find credible resources through their devices they are instead giving them tasks where students can simply “Google” the answer. STRATERGIES TO COMBAT THIS AS EDUCATORS: Create activities and exercises that teach students the skill of research and then allow them to share that information in a responsible fashion. Encourage students to come up with their own alternate uses for digital technology such as using it a means to connect with other students through discussion boards. Teach information literacy on identifying, accessing, applying and creating information.
  • 4. COMMERCE  Online purchasing is rapidly becoming the norm thus should be something students need to be taught to understand if it educations goal to produce literate citizens.  Students can be unware of the phenomenon of identity theft and can even fail to realize the negative consequences of poor online purchasing and impulse buying.  With ease of access students can also be unaware of unscrupulous sellers and well targeted marketing. STRATERGIES TO COMBAT THIS AS EDUCATORS: Inform students about these dangers and encourage them to research the credibility of a company before purchasing goods online. Teach them strategies to protect their identity online such as the danger of giving personal information online and the danger of over sharing.
  • 5. RIGHTS  When creating or publishing anything digitally students need to be aware of copyright restrictions and need to also be aware that if they create content they have the same rights as other creators.  Many students violate copyright on regularly simply because they are completely unware they are doing so. STRATERGIES TO COMBAT THIS AS EDUCATORS: Inform students of the negative consequences of violating copy right issues and educate them on how to ensure they do not violate them. Engage students with discussion about copyright issues inside and outside of the classroom such as illegally obtaining music and movies.
  • 6. SECURITY  Students should be taught about the importance of virus protection, firewalls and off-site storage as more sensitive information is stored electronically.  Unfortunately some educators do not believe it is important to regularly update software to ensure protection and thus will never teach the importance of this to their students and may even lose students work if their device becomes infected. STRATERGIES TO COMBAT THIS AS EDUCATORS: Teach students to back-up their data to ensure that all is not lost if they device does become infected. Teach students how to conduct regular checks for viruses and other software intrusions. Research what your school does to provide protection and possible outside digital harm.
