Katy Perry - Teenage Dream front cover, Justin Bieber - Believe album, Little Mix - DNA album, and Ariana Grande - Yours Truly album deconstruction for A2 Media Studies
2. KATY PERRY â TEENAGE DREAM
The artists name looks
fairly childish while also
looking like candy. The
writing is in an informal
font creating a chilled
feeling as well as
showing the artist to be
young and youthful.
This links to the pop
genre as it has a
younger audience.
The background which
the artist is laying on is
candy floss. This is
shown to look like the
artist is laying on clouds
which is not very realistic
however it could be what
a younger audience is
interested in seeing.
Candy floss is usually
associated with childlike
things such as fairs etc.
Having this portrays the
artist as being childlike
and relating to her
audience.
The position in which Katy
Perry is laying as well as her
not wearing anything
suggests it is also targeting a
male audience. This also
portrays the artist as not
caring about what people
think and doing what she
wants to do. This also
attracts the audience to her
as she is the main focus.
The name of the album is also in a childish
font while also having red and white swirls
as the fill for the name, this also gives off a
childish impression through looking again,
like candy. This links to the name âTeenage
Dreamâ as most younger people like candy.
3. JUSTIN BIEBER â BELIEVE â
FRONT
The background is
fairly plain which puts
the main focus on the
artist. Towards the left
of the front cover it is
lighter suggesting that a
light is facing the artist
from diagonally behind
which is also shown on
the artists back of
head.
The artists name is across the
top which states whose album it
is however it does not stand out
as much as anything else.
The front cover features a
medium close up of the
artists face which also
shows whose album it is.
There is a side light
shining on his face from
the right which causes
part of the shadow on the
left side of his face. He
has a blank kind of
expression on his face
giving off a serous kind
of impression while he is
looking over his shoulder.
However it is unclear as
to what he is looking at
behind him.
The album title âBelieveâ is one of the largest parts of the front cover which
makes it stand out more to attract audiences. âBelieveâ has connotations like
confidence and trust which reflect onto the audience while also being a possible
reflection on the artists past life experiences. Believe suggests Justin had a time
where he changed his life around for the better therefore forgetting bad
decisions of the past. This could also be the reason for him looking over his
shoulder.
4. INSIDE â BELIEVE ALBUM
Inside included a
small booklet
which gave details
about each song in
the album such as
producers,
companies
involved, recording
studio, background
vocals etc. This
then opened up to
a signed poster. By
including this gives
extra information
about the process
of making the
album while also
giving the audience
something to keep
(poster)
This extra piece of information tells
you where to find lyrics as well as
giving details of when and where is
was produced and copyright
information. This again gives extra
detail for the artists album.
This medium close up features the artist in a more colourful
way while still having a serious like similar to the front cover.
The lighting is a lot brighter suggesting he had more light
during this photoshoot to make him stand out more.
The CD clarifies
the artist and
album while also
giving website
links, producer
information and
record labels
information etc.
This allows
audiences to
research more
into it or find
extra
information if
needed.
The inside sticks to the same
colour scheme as the rest of the
cover which makes it more
appealing and professional.
5. BACK â BELIEVE ALBUM
The photo which is on the
back features the artist
playing his guitar on the
street while still promoting
the album name on the inside
of his guitar case. The image
also sticks to the main colour
scheme of yellow and black
which having light shining
down creating positivity for
the album.
This also follows a
convention of all
digipaks of having a
barcode on the back to
identify the album.
This information is a repeat which is throughout the digipak
which gives the information about copyright, producers, songs,
website links and record labels. There are logos at the bottom
which are of the producers etc. This promotes them as well as
the album.
The song list is fairly plain
and simple. The songs are
listed from 1-13 with
âBelieveâ being 13 as it is
the name of the album.
The song which matches
the title of the album
always tends to be the last
song on the list. The font is
normal whilst all the letters
are in capital letters.
This quote said by Justin Bieber is highlighted in a yellow box to make it
stand out. The quote says âWhere would I be if YOU didnât believeâŚâ
This suggests Justin may have gone through some bad times therefore
with the support of his fans, it led him to get better.
6. LITTLE MIX â DNA - FRONT
The colour scheme that is
used for this is pink, blue,
purple and yellow. The colour
scheme is bright which
represents the pop genre
which Little Mix are. The
colour scheme will attract the
audience while also
representing their female
gender.
Medium close ups of each
individual member of Little
Mix are shown while they are
all positioned differently. The
artists position suggests they
are looking for some kind of
attention from a male
audience. All artists are looking
directly forwards while Perrie
(bottom left) has her hand on
her face giving off a seductive
facial expression.
The background is split into 4 individual boxes which the
images of the members of Little mix are in. This separates
them all while each section is separated unequally portraying
the group as being unconventional.
The group name and album name are placed in the centre of
the front cover. They are not as big as the rest of the front cover
however, the text is in bold capital letters with the album name
being shown in bright pink with a yellow background making it
stand out more.
7. INSIDE - DNA
The CD
background is a
plain blue
however the
groups name
âLittle Mixâ is in
the same font and
style which is on
the front. At the
bottom of the CD
is information
about copyright,
record labels etc.
There is also a
logo for SYCO
music, the record
label they are
signed to.
The left of the
inside in the
digipak is also
fairly plain and
simple with a
yellow
background with
different symbols
down the bottom.
The symbols are
not typically what
you would see on
a digipak however
following that
Little Mix are
unconventional it
matches perfectly.
The inside of the digipak still matches the colour
scheme presented on the front cover.
The booklet has each song along with the lyrics
then if you turned it over it then was a poster of
Little Mix. The lyrics assist the audience if they
donât know lyrics etc.
8. BACK - DNA
Each song in the album is in block
capitals with the box around them like
the âLittle Mixâ title throughout the rest
of the digipak.
In smaller black writing, a
featuring artist in the
song is written. This is
written in smaller writing
which makes it seem like
they are less important as
it isnât their album.
The barcode is a
typical convention of
a back of a digipak.
This extra piece of
information tells you
details of when and
where is was produced
and copyright
information. This gives
extra detail for the
artists album.
The back of the cover follows the colour scheme
of the whole album with yellow, blue and pink.
The yellow background is calm which allows the
songs to stand out more. The black small writing
is at the bottom suggesting it is less important.
9. ARIANA GRANDE â YOURS TRULY -
FRONT
The background of the
front cover is dark
which makes the artist
stand out more. The
front cover is in black
and white minus the title
âYours Trulyâ which
gives a kind of
mysterious feeling.
The position of Ariana
gives off the impression
that she is careless
towards anything. It also
gives the impression that
she is confidence with
herself.
Towards the bottom of the front cover the background blends
in with Ariana. Arianaâs face at the top is the brightest part of
the front cover which suggests she had a light from above
shining on her face to make her the main focus.
The sticker on the front
of the digipak was
added on however it
shows the singles which
are featured in the
album.
10. INSIDE â YOURS TRULY
The inside of the
digipak for Yours
Truly is plain and
simple with the
white booklet to
the left. Being
simple puts the
main focus on the
actual album. The
booklet contains
each song name
and information
about who
produced them,
recorded them etc.
The CD for Yours Truly is plain pink which matches the
title of âYours Trulyâ being pink. It has a pattern around
it which makes it more interesting. This attracts a female
audience as it has female features.
At the bottom and around the sides is information
about copyright and record labels etc. This gives
extra information about it. This information is on all
CDs and digipaks to promote who has helped make
the album.
11. BACK â YOURS TRULY
The song list is in
white on a light pink
background which is
not very clear at all
however songs 1-12 are
central down the cover.
The song list is always
numbered on the back
of a cover so the
audience know what
song is on when.
This information is extra
about the producers and
the label they are with. This
gives the helping people
some credit for helping in
the process.
Here is 2 links to websites.
Ariana Grandeâs website and
Republic Records website. This
can allow people to find out
more if they wanted to.
The barcode again
follows the convention
of the back of
digipaks which
identifies the product.
The small logo and
writing is again, extra
information about the
record label Ariana is
signed to as well as
stating copyright is
unauthorised.
The background is
pink which is different
to the front cover
however follows part
of the colour scheme.
