I have looked into the layout and composition of magazine adverts for some digipak front covers, some digipak front covers and screenshots of some music videos.
2. Katy Perry ‘One of the Boys’ Album Magazine Advert
The costume
gives a sense of
a vintage feel.
She is dressed
in typical 1950s
fashion and
reflects the pop
genre. The
artist makes
direct eye
contact with
her audience to
attract them to
buy the album.
The layout of this magazine advert has the main artist name in bigger writing at the top of
the advert. The font is the same as it was on the album front cover and the same with the
name of the album. They have also chosen to include one of the most known songs on the
album on the front of the magazine cover to promote the album even more. There is a
release date to let people know when the actual album will come out as well as small print
of her website. The website link allows the audience to find out extra information.
The background
includes a white
picket fence
representing a
symbol of an
ideal middle
class family in
America. This
suggests the
album would be
suitable for
people who
match this
lifestyle.
3. Lana Del Rey ‘Born To Die’ Album Magazine Advert
The layout of this
magazine advert for
Lana Del Rey’s ‘Born To
Die’ album does not
include a picture of the
actual album, it does
however include the
name of the album and
when it is coming out.
The main image of
Lana Del Rey is directly
in the middle of the
page. The artists name
is the biggest at the
top of the page making
it obvious whose
album it is. There is
some smaller print at
the bottom
underneath the album
release date giving
some extra
information.
The image used in this
magazine advert is the
same image used on
the actual album front
cover making a direct
link between the
album and advert for
the album.
The colours used (Blue
and White) imply a
summer vibe. White
suggests purity and
reinforces the nature
theme which is being
illustrated. Blue
represents a sense of
tranquillity shown
through facial
expressions like
looking at the
audience and posture.
4. George Harrison ‘Early Takes Volume 1’
Digipak Front Cover
The
composition of
this digipak
front cover is
also the Rule
of Thirds
showing there
is a balanced
composition.
This is shown
with the artists
face being
directly in the
middle of the
digipak front
cover. The
lines all
intersect
proving the
Rule of Thirds.
The layout of this
front cover has
the main artists
name at the top
of the front cover.
The name of the
album follows
underneath. The
colours of the
names are similar
to the
background
colours showing
consistency. The
‘Volume 1’ is
slightly lighter as
it is less
important
however it is part
1 of a films
soundtrack.
5. Tove Lo ‘Queen of the Clouds’ Digipak
Front Cover
The composition
of this digipak
front cover is the
rule of thirds. This
means there is a
balanced
composition. The
lines intersect at 4
different points
showing that
there is a main
subject in the
middle. In this
example, most of
the middle of the
face is right in the
middle showing
that they have
positioned this
image well.
The album is called
‘Queen of the
Clouds’ which is
also represented
by the background.
There are slight
pink clouds as the
background which
fade up to the dark
blue sky. Having
the main artist in
the middle with
the clouds around
her supports her
album name of
‘Queen of the
Clouds’.
6. Logic - 1-800-273-8255 ft Alessia Cara &
Khalid
The composition of this music video is slightly to the middle. It is showing the person walking to be
walking in the middle of the road. This image reflects the song in many ways. For example, it is a dark
scene and the person is in dark which could reflect how they used to feel but there is a forward to him
being happy now after seeking help from the National Suicide Helpline and that is why he is walking in
the middle of the road instead of to the side suggesting he is more stable now. The layout is set so it is
quiet and dark however there are lights in the distant so he could be walking towards happiness.
7. The composition of this music video screenshot is off-centered. This may suggest that he is struggling with some situations in life. The
meaning of the video is to speak out for victims of domestic abuse. Throughout the video, Shawn Mendes is listening to a girl getting beaten
by her boyfriend. The line from the top to the bottom is shows a distinct difference between the left and right. This separation between
Shawn and his guitar may suggest that he cannot play his own music as it is positive and what he has been listening to is negative. However, he
may be surrounding himself with music as his method of coping for ‘listening’ to abuse.
