To increase energy yield from an installed photovoltaic (PV) array, particularly during partial shading condition (PSC), a new technique based on reconfigurable PV array interconnection is proposed in this work. The proposed technique works by dynamically changing the interconnection of PV modules to form a new configuration using a switching matrix inside the array. The criteria of good reconfigurable PV array interconnection techniques depend on the efficiency and accuracy of the control algorithm to optimally reconfigure the PV array to maximize the total output power. Hence, this paper proposes a new control algorithm using differential evolution (DE) for photovoltaic array reconfiguration (PVAR). To verify the superiority of the proposed algorithm, DE is compared with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Results confirm that DE performs well in terms of the amount of energy production during PSC. For all the nine shading patterns tested on a 3 × 3 PV array, DE yields 1% to 5% more power than PSO.
The real problems in diminution of power quality occurs due to the rapid growth of nonlinear load are leads to sudden decrease of source voltage for a few seconds i.e sag, swell, harmonics in source and load current, voltage unbalance etc. All these problems can be compensated by using Unified Power Quality Controller (UPQC) and the operation of UPQC depends upon the available voltage across capacitor present in dc link. If the capacitor voltage is maintained constant then it gives satisfactory performance. The proposed research is basically on designing of Photo Voltaic (PV) /Wind energy fed to the dc link capacitor of UPQC so as to maintain proper voltage across it and operate the UPQC for power quality analysis. The said model is simulated in Matlab and results are verified by using FFT analysis. The proposed PV/ Wind energy-UPQC is design in Matlab simulation for reduction of voltage sag, swell, interruption of voltage, harmonics in load current and compensation of active and reactive power.

Comparison between neural network and P&O method in optimizing MPPT control f...IJECEIAES
The demand for renewable energy has increased because it is considered a clean energy and does not result in any pollution or emission of toxic gases that negatively affect the environment and human health also requiring little maintenance, and emitting no noise, so it is necessary to develop this type of energy and increase its production capacity. In this research a design of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control method using Neural Network (NN) for photovoltaic system is presented. First we design a standalone PV system linked to dc boost chopper with MPPT by perturbation and observation P&O technique, and then a design of MPPT by using ANN for the same system is presented. Comparative between two control methods are studied. The results explained in constant and adjustable weather settings such as irradiation and temperature. The results exposed that the proposed MPPT by ANN control can improve the PV array efficiency by reduce the oscillation around the MPP that accure in P&O method and so decreases the power losses. As well as decrease the the overshot that accure in transient response, and hence improving the performance of the solar cell.
When the irradiance distribution over the photovoltaic panels is uniform, the pursuit of the maximum power point is not reached, which has allowed several researchers to use traditional MPPT techniques to solve this problem Among these techniques a PSO algorithm is used to have the maximum global power point (GMPPT) under partial shading. On the other hand, this one is not reliable vis-à-vis the pursuit of the MPPT. Therefore, in this paper we have treated another technique based on a new modified PSO algorithm so that the power can reach its maximum point. The PSO algorithm is based on the heuristic method which guarantees not only the obtaining of MPPT but also the simplicity of control and less expensive of the system. The results are obtained using MATLAB show that the proposed modified PSO algorithm performs better than conventional PSO and is robust to different partial shading models.

The purpose of this article is to extract the maximum power point at which the photovoltaic system can operate optimally. The system considered is simulated under different irradiations (between 200 W/m2 and 1000 W/m2), it mainly includes the established models of solar PV and MPPT module, a DC/DC boost converter and a DC/AC converter. The most common MPPT techniques that will be studied are: "Perturbation and Observation" (P&O) method, "Incremental Conductance" (INC) method, and "Fuzzy Logic" (FL) control. Simulation results obtained using MATLAB/Simulink are analyzed and compared to evaluate the performance of each of the three techniques.
The performance of PV panel is very much dependent on the amount of sun light as well as the temperature of the surrounding environment which normally hard to be predicted. The use of PV emulator in the investigation of solar inverter especially at a lab scale platform helps to mitigate the inconsistency factors due to this uncontrollable variation. This work discussed on the design and development of a PV emulator for the grid-connected quasi-Z-source inverter which has different topology and control method compared to the conventional voltage source inverter. The I-V characteristics of the PV panel is modelled from the commercially available product and through circuit analysis the relation between capacitor voltage control and the PV terminal voltage is established, thus realizing the MPPT operation. Results from both simulation and experimental verification demonstrated that the PV emulator successfully able to produce power for the inverter according to the requirement.
We introduce in this paper a new FPGA-based Maximum Power Tracker for photovoltaic systems. The developed approach targets to modify the perturb and observe in view of reaching rapid tracking and achieving excellent accuracy, while keeping the stability performance and the reduced complexity. To perform this improvement, an automatic and smart two steps switcher is integrated, in addition inputs FIR filters are incorporated. Therefore, a high sampling frequency is attained, and consequently the tracking speed is improved. MATLAB simulations and the Xilinx FPGA implementation results show that the improved approach reaches a performance very close to the recently published MPPT methods, with lesser complexity.

Harmonic assessment on two photovoltaic inverter modes and mathematical model...IJECEIAES
Power quality is a crucial aspect of designing a large-scale photovoltaic power plant, particularly regarding harmonics caused by inverter switching. This research aimed to analyze harmonics in a system using electrical transient analyzer program (ETAP) Power Station 20.5.0 to uncover the effect of irradiance on the inverters’ power quality running at 85% and 100% power factors. We analyzed both voltage and current total harmonic distortion (THDi and THDv) from the simulation and compared them with the mathematical model. Moreover, we analyzed the effect of changes in irradiance level on harmonics and reactive power penetration, which influenced power losses in transformers and cables. Inverters at 85% power factor experienced an increase in THDi, whereas those at 100% power factor decreased. Inverters with 85% power factor experienced more frequent switching, causing more prominent distortion. The magnitude of THDv increased proportionally with the rise of irradiance level. Inverters at 85% had a higher THDv value because of the excessive reactive power compensation when irradiance rose. Irradiance level had an inverse relationship with system losses since high irradiance levels led to lower losses as less power was required through transmission lines and transformers. Moreover, losses at 85% power factor were higher since the high harmonics caused additional losses.

Solar energy is a vital untapped resource in a tropical country like ours. The main hindrance for the penetration and reach of solar PV systems is their low efficiency and high capital cost. The efficiency of solar PV is very low. In order to increase the efficiency, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) techniques are to be undertaken to match the source and load property. These techniques are employed in PV systems to make full utilization of PV array output power. Recently, many MPPT algorithms of PV system have been proposed which depends on solar irradiation and temperature, but perturb and observe (P&O) and Incremental conductance algorithms are basic and most widely used. This project firstly introduces a Mat lab Simulink of photovoltaic array. To achieve the maximum power point tracking the Incremental Conductance method and perturb and observed (P&O) method are used. These two algorithms are employed with PV model along with converter in Mat lab Simulink. Three different converter boost, buck boost and cuk converter are design according to requirement and used. Few comparisons such as voltage, current and power output for each different combination have been recorded. The aim of this research is the speed tracking of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using an intelligent Neural-Network based adapative backstepping control. First, the model of PMSM in the Park synchronous frame is derived. Then, the PMSM speed regulation is investigated using the classical method utilizing the field oriented control theory. Thereafter, a robust nonlinear controller employing an adaptive backstepping strategy is investigated in order to achieve a good performance tracking objective under motor parameters changing and external load torque application. In the final step, a neural network estimator is integrated with the adaptive controller to estimate the motor parameters values and the load disturbance value for enhancing the effectiveness of the adaptive backstepping controller. The robsutness of the presented control algorithm is demonstrated using simulation tests. The obtained results clearly demonstrate that the presented NN-adaptive control algorithm can provide good trackingperformances for the speed trackingin the presence of motor parameter variation and load application.
This paper presents a fast and accurate fault detection, classification and direction discrimination algorithm of transmission lines using one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1D-CNNs) that have ingrained adaptive model to avoid the feature extraction difficulties and fault classification into one learning algorithm. A proposed algorithm is directly usable with raw data and this deletes the need of a discrete feature extraction method resulting in more effective protective system. The proposed approach based on the three-phase voltages and currents signals of one end at the relay location in the transmission line system are taken as input to the proposed 1D-CNN algorithm. A 132kV power transmission line is simulated by Matlab simulink to prepare the training and testing data for the proposed 1D- CNN algorithm. The testing accuracy of the proposed algorithm is compared with other two conventional methods which are neural network and fuzzy neural network. The results of test explain that the new proposed detection system is efficient and fast for classifying and direction discrimination of fault in transmission line with high accuracy as compared with other conventional methods under various conditions of faults.
Among the most widespread renewable energy sources is solar energy; Solar panels offer a green, clean, and environmentally friendly source of energy. In the presence of several advantages of the use of photovoltaic systems, the random operation of the photovoltaic generator presents a great challenge, in the presence of a critical load. Among the most used solutions to overcome this problem is the combination of solar panels with generators or with the public grid or both. In this paper, an energy management strategy is proposed with a safety aspect by using artificial neural networks (ANNs), in order to ensure a continuous supply of electricity to consumers with a maximum solicitation of renewable energy.
In this paper, the artificial neural network (ANN) has been utilized for rotating machinery faults detection and classification. First, experiments were performed to measure the lateral vibration signals of laboratory test rigs for rotor-disk-blade when the blades are defective. A rotor-disk-blade system with 6 regular blades and 5 blades with various defects was constructed. Second, the ANN was applied to classify the different x- and y-axis lateral vibrations due to different blade faults. The results based on training and testing with different data samples of the fault types indicate that the ANN is robust and can effectively identify and distinguish different blade faults caused by lateral vibrations in a rotor. As compared to the literature, the present paper presents a novel work of identifying and classifying various rotating blade faults commonly encountered in rotating machines using ANN. Experimental data of lateral vibrations of the rotor-disk-blade system in both x- and y-directions are used for the training and testing of the network.
This paper focuses on the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm, which is a nonlinear optimization problem. is proposed to find the optimal power flow (OPF). Kosovo has limited renewable energy resources and its power generation sector is based on fossil fuels. Such a situation emphasizes the importance of active research and efficient use of renewable energy potential. According to the analysis of meteorological data for Kosovo, it can be concluded that among the most attractive potential wind power sites are the locations known as Kitka (42° 29' 41" N and 21° 36' 45" E) and Koznica (42° 39′ 32″ N, 21° 22′30″E). The two terrains in which the analysis was carried out are mountain areas, with altitudes of 1142 m (Kitka) and 1230 m (Koznica). the same measuring height, about 84 m above the ground, is obtained for these average wind speeds: Kitka 6,667 m/s and Koznica 6,16 m/s. Since the difference in wind speed is quite large versus a difference in altitude that is not being very large, analyses are made regarding the terrain characteristics including the terrain relief features. In this paper it will be studied how much the roughness of the terrain influences the output energy. Also, that the assumption to be taken the same as to how much they will affect the annual energy produced.
Large-scale grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) station are increasing rapidly. However, this large penetration of PV system creates frequency fluctuation in the grid due to the intermittency of solar irradiance. Therefore, in this paper, a robust droop control mechanism of the battery energy storage system (BESS) is developed in order to damp the frequency fluctuation of the multi-machine grid system due to variable active power injected from the PV panel. The proposed droop control strategy incorporates frequency error signal and dead-band for effective minimization of frequency fluctuation. The BESS system is used to consume/inject an effective amount of active power based upon the frequency oscillation of the grid system. The simulation analysis is carried out using PSCAD/EMTDC software to prove the effectiveness of the proposed droop control-based BESS system. The simulation result implies that the proposed scheme can efficiently curtail the frequency oscillation.

This paper focuses on the modeling and control of a wind energy conversion chain using a permanent magnet synchronous machine. This system behaves a turbine, a generator, DC/DC and DC/AC power converters. These are connected on both sides to the DC bus, where the inverter is followed by a filter which is connected to the grid. In this paper, we have been used two types of controllers. For the stator side converter, we consider the Takagi-Sugeno approach where the parameters of controller have been computed by the theory of linear matrix inequalities. The stability synthesis has been checked using the Lyapunov theory. According to the grid side converter, the proportional integral controller is exploited to keep a constant voltage on the DC bus and control both types of powers. The simulation results demonstrate the robustness of the approach used.
The development of modeling wind speed plays a very important in helping to obtain the actual wind speed data for the benefit of the power plant planning in the future. The wind speed in this paper is obtained from a PCE-FWS 20 type measuring instrument with a duration of 30 minutes which is accumulated into monthly data for one year (2019). Despite the many wind speed modeling that has been done by researchers. Modeling wind speeds proposed in this study were obtained from the modified Rayleigh distribution. In this study, the Rayleigh scale factor (Cr) and modified Rayleigh scale factor (Cm) were calculated. The observed wind speed is compared with the predicted wind characteristics. The data fit test used correlation coefficient (R2), root means square error (RMSE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). The results of the proposed modified Rayleigh model provide very good results for users.

A stable operation of wind turbines connected to the grid is an essential requirement to ensure the reliability and stability of the power system. To achieve such operational objective, installing static synchronous compensator static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) as a main compensation device guarantees the voltage stability enhancement of the wind farm connected to distribution network at different operating scenarios. STATCOM either supplies or absorbs reactive power in order to ensure the voltage profile within the standard-margins and to avoid turbine tripping, accordingly. This paper present new study that investigates the most suitable-location to install STATCOM in a distribution system connected wind farm to maintain the voltage-levels within the stability margins. For a large-scale squirrel cage induction generator squirrel-cage induction generator (SCIG-based) wind turbine system, the impact of STATCOM installation was tested in different places and voltage-levels in the distribution system. The proposed method effectiveness in enhancing the voltage profile and balancing the reactive power is validated, the results were repeated for different scenarios of expected contingencies. The voltage profile, power flow, and reactive power balance of the distribution system are observed using MATLAB/Simulink software.
The electrical and environmental parameters of polymer solar cells (PSC) provide important information on their performance. In the present article we study the influence of temperature on the voltage-current (I-V) characteristic at different temperatures from 10 °C to 90 °C, and important parameters like bandgap energy Eg, and the energy conversion efficiency η. The one-diode electrical model, normally used for semiconductor cells, has been tested and validated for the polemeral junction. The PSC used in our study are formed by the poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). Our technique is based on the combination of two steps; the first use the Least Mean Squares (LMS) method while the second use the Newton-Raphson algorithm. The found results are compared to other recently published works, they show that the developed approach is very accurate. This precision is proved by the minimal values of statistical errors (RMSE) and the good agreement between both the experimental data and the I-V simulated curves. The obtained results show a clear and a monotonic dependence of the cell efficiency on the studied parameters.
The inverter is the principal part of the photovoltaic (PV) systems that assures the direct current/alternating current (DC/AC) conversion (PV array is connected directly to an inverter that converts the DC energy produced by the PV array into AC energy that is directly connected to the electric utility). In this paper, we present a simple method for detecting faults that occurred during the operation of the inverter. These types of faults or faults affect the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the photovoltaic system, especially the inverter, which is the main component responsible for the conversion. Hence, we have shown first the faults obtained in the case of the short circuit. Second, the open circuit failure is studied. The results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method. Good monitoring and detection of faults in the inverter can increase the system's reliability and decrease the undesirable faults that appeared in the PV system. The system behavior is tested under variable parameters and conditions using MATLAB/Simulink.
The electrical distribution network is undergoing tremendous modifications with the introduction of distributed generation technologies which have led to an increase in fault current levels in the distribution network. Fault current limiters have been developed as a promising technology to limit fault current levels in power systems. Though, quite a number of fault current limiters have been developed; the most common are the superconducting fault current limiters, solid-state fault current limiters, and saturated core fault current limiters. These fault current limiters present potential fault current limiting solutions in power systems. Nevertheless, they encounter various challenges hindering their deployment and commercialization. This research aimed at designing a bridge-type nonsuperconducting fault current limiter with a novel topology for distribution network applications. The proposed bridge-type nonsuperconducting fault current limiter was designed and simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results showed the effectiveness of the proposed design in fault current limiting, voltage sag compensation during fault conditions, and its ability not to affect the load voltage and current during normal conditions as well as in suppressing the source powers during fault conditions. Simulation results also showed very minimal power loss by the fault current limiter during normal conditions.
This paper provides a new approach to reducing high-order harmonics in 400 Hz inverter using a three-level neutral-point clamped (NPC) converter. A voltage control loop using the harmonic compensation combined with NPC clamping diode control technology. The capacitor voltage imbalance also causes harmonics in the output voltage. For 400 Hz inverter, maintain a balanced voltage between the two input (direct current) (DC) capacitors is difficult because the pulse width modulation (PWM) modulation frequency ratio is low compared to the frequency of the output voltage. A method of determining the current flowing into the capacitor to control the voltage on the two balanced capacitors to ensure fast response reversal is also given in this paper. The combination of a high-harmonic resonator controller and a neutral-point voltage controller working together on the 400 Hz NPC inverter structure is given in this paper.
Direct current (DC) electronic load is a useful equipment for testing the electrical system. It can emulate various load at a high rating. The electronic load requires a power converter to operate and a linear regulator is a common option. Nonetheless, it is hard to control due to the temperature variation. This paper proposed a DC electronic load using the boost converter. The proposed electronic load operates in the continuous current mode and control using the integral controller. The electronic load using the boost converter is compared with the electronic load using the linear regulator. The results show that the boost converter able to operate as an electronic load with an error lower than 0.5% and response time lower than 13 ms.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!

linked, and honeycomb. Power loss was reduced in the TCT configuration because of the cross-tie (CT) that
connects across each junction as an alternate path for the current to flow through the PV array.
[15] and [16] improved the PV array configuration method into the PV array reconfiguration
(PVAR). PVAR forms a new configuration based on the optimal output power under static and nonstatic PSC
by changing the connection or physical movement of the PV modules. Sanseverino et al. proposed PVAR
control by switching to the matrix that is based on irradiance equalization method. This method reduced the
multiple peaks of power–voltage (P–V) and current–voltage (I–V) curves caused by bypassing diodes in the
PV array to a single peak. However, this method is not precise because the irradiance values of each PV
module are estimated by an equation and not by an irradiance meter, which provides a high chance of
obtaining accurate readings. Furthermore, implementing this method entails a high cost because current and
voltage sensors are required for each PV module [17]. Babu T.S. et al. implemented particle swarm
optimization (PSO) algorithm to control and optimize the switching matrix of PVAR with an array size of 9
× 9. The objective function of the PSO algorithm is irradiance equalization, which utilizes an equation to
estimate the irradiance values. Although this work used the PSO algorithm as the optimization method, the
PVAR does not yield the optimal energy because the size of the array after reconfiguration is still fixed at 9 ×
9, and the irradiance values are not comparable with the real values [18]. Ramaprabha proposed a PSO
algorithm that is also implemented in PVAR and whose objective function is power maximization. The
variable of the objective function is the current value of the PV array. Nevertheless, the accuracy of the PSO
algorithm in this work is not constant, and it does not optimally extract the energy [19]. Consequently, some
improvements have been made in this work by utilizing differential evolution (DE) algorithm in PVAR. The
PVAR works by changing the electrical connection between the PV modules regardless of its physical
position. The objective function of DE in this work is similar in [19]. The objective function can be achieved
by changing the switches of the modules. Only one of each current and voltage sensors is needed to measure
the output power of each population during the optimization process. The proposed DE-based PVAR is
compared with PSO to analyze the performance of both algorithms. Both algorithms are tested on a 3 × 3 PV
array under 9 shading patterns by using MATLAB/Simulink® software.
2. BASIC PRINCIPLE
This work uses MATLAB/Simulink® software to develop the DE-based PVAR. To implement
PVAR, a suitable model of PV cell needs to be developed in the software. Then, the PV cells are connected
to form the PV modules and an array. Normally, 36 PV cells are connected in series to form a PV module. In
this work, a single-diode PV model is used to model the simple yet accurate characteristics of PV cells. The
single-diode model provides an excellent qualitative prediction of PS and mismatch effects [9, 20]. Figure 1
shows the equivalent circuit of the single-diode PV model.

Ki is the temperature coefficient of the short-circuit current and ∆T=T−TSTC, where T is the surrounding
temperature of the PV module. The conditions that have been set for standard test condition (STC) are
TSTC = 25 °C and GSTC = 1,000 W/m2
. As indicated by Equation (2), the performance of PV is susceptible to
the irradiance and temperature level. In the case of PSC, the observation on the irradiance and temperature
levels is set constant according to STC. The parameters of the PV cell for this paper are based on the
National Renewable Energy Laboratory system. This work employed 9 PV modules (API156P-230)
manufactured by Advance Solar Hydro Wind Power.
PSC can cause the hotspot effect on the PV module, thereby causing the PV module to overheat and
become damaged entirely. Adding a bypass diode in the anti-parallel connection with the PV module can
reduce the effect, as shown in Figure 2. PV1 is the module that experiences PSC. Hence, the bypass diode
creates a new path for the current produced by the non-shaded PV modules to flow across the string.

3. DEVELOPMENT OF THE PV ARRAY RECONFIGURATION (PVAR)
To build a high-performance PVAR circuit, the basic topology of the circuit should be selected
based on static configuration. Most researchers proved that the TCT configuration is the best static
configuration under PSC with less power loss [21, 22]. Consequently, the PVAR connection in this work is
developed based on a TCT topology. Each series of connected PV modules is connected with a cross–tie
(CT) across each junction. Figure 3 shows the wiring diagram of PVAR that implements a switching matrix
that is controlled by a digital microcontroller unit. The PV modules in the PVAR are represented by PV1 to
PV9.
The green lines show the connection of the microcontroller unit to each set of the switching matrix.
The microcontroller is also connected to the voltage and current sensors. Hence, the microcontroller can
determine the output power of the PVAR during the reconfiguration process. Moreover, the switching matrix
rearranged the electrical connection of the PV modules within three rows in the PVAR to form the new
reconfiguration. The PV modules in the PVAR switched the electrical connections to the first row when the
microcontroller unit set the command “1” to the switching matrix, then to the second row when the command
is set to “2,” and then to the third row when the command is set to “3.”
Figure 4 illustrates how the switching matrix of PVAR changed the electrical connection between
the PV modules. PV7 and PV9 are shaded. The initial physical positions and electrical connections of PV7

and PV9 are in the first and third rows, respectively. After the microcontroller unit set the command to the
switching matrix based on the maximum output power, the electrical connections between PV7 and PV9 are
changed to the second and first rows, respectively, without altering their physical positions.

4. DIFFERENTIAL EVOLUTION BASED PVAR
Solving for the switching matrix of the PV array is complicated under certain shading patterns, and
several iterations are needed to obtain the result. To solve this problem and to reach the optimum power from
the PV array, the DE algorithm is employed to reconfigure the switching matrix. DE was introduced in [23]
and is one of the most powerful population-based optimization algorithms. DE is a simple algorithm that
requires few control parameters, and it works by creating a new candidate solution under a different equation
with different techniques for a problem that requires maintaining the size of a population. The new candidate
and the existing solutions are compared to produce the best fitness for the objective function of the problem.
The chosen solution stays in the population until the next preferred solution takes place.
This algorithm aims to optimize a problem or an objective function X. The objective function of the
DE algorithm is the maximum output power of PVAR. The population P in DE has individuals of the
population that are NP real-valued parameter vectors. The potential solution candidate is formed through the
individuals of the population and can be described as (3)

The DE population size is set at 10, and each individual in the population has its own dimension
size, which is set to 9 because the PVAR circuit has 9 PV modules. The population works as an individual
that produces the potential candidate in solving the optimization problem. Furthermore, the generation G is
set at 25, wherein 10 individuals in the population will iterate 25 times. As mentioned in the previous section,
the microcontroller in the PVAR circuit needs to set the commands “1,” “2,” and “3.” Therefore, the
constraints set in this work are 1 for the lower boundary and 3 for the upper boundary based on Equation (4).

Then, the trial and target vectors go through the process of choosing the vector that will survive in
the next iteration. The selection is based on the maximum output power of the PVAR. After the iteration of
the generation is completed, the best combination cases will be selected as the solution for the objective
function. The whole process of DE-based PVAR is explained in Figure 6.

5. PERFORMANCE OF DE AND PSO BASED PVAR
In this work, the proposed DE-based PVAR is compared with the PSO algorithm to observe their
effectiveness and performance. Similar to DE, PSO is a population-based algorithm. Thus, comparing both
algorithms in terms of their fitness and accuracy in optimizing PVAR output power under PSC is reasonable.
The population, dimension, and generation for both algorithms are set similarly. The performances of DE-
and PSO-based PVAR are tested on nine shading patterns to simulate the real PSC, as shown in Figure 7. The
PV modules in the PVAR are set with different irradiance values of 300, 500, 700, and 1,000 W/m2. The
maximum output powers of the fully irradiated patterns for both algorithms are similar. Therefore, only eight
remaining patterns will be observed. Otherwise, the fully irradiated pattern becomes a reference pattern.
The performances of DE and PSO are observed based on the percentages of power losses (%PL). To
analyze %PL, the maximum output power of the DE- and PSO-based PVARs under the observed patterns
(Pmax) are compared with the output power of the reference pattern (Pmaxref), as stated in Equation (7)

The fitness of the algorithms is analyzed, and the result is shown in the next section. Each
generation produced a selected PVAR with its corresponding output power, and the maximum output power
is assumed to have been achieved when a solution converges. The best algorithm should converge faster with
high accuracy and maximum power.

6. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The performance of the proposed DE-based PVAR is observed from the result of the analyses. After
25 generations of DE and PSO algorithms are completed, the P–V characteristics of both algorithms are
compared to analyze the power loss, as illustrated in Figure 8. The %PL of the DE-based PVAR on the
diagonal and long, short, long, cross, step, and U patterns are lower than that of the PSO-based PVAR. The
remaining patterns show that the %PL for both algorithms is similar. To summarize, DE-based PVAR is the
ideal technique to yield energy from the PV array because it produces the highest Pmax and has low power
losses under most PS patterns.
Figure 8. Power loss percentages
Table 1 shows that the fastest maximum output power achieved by DE-based PVAR is at
Generation = 7 during the short pattern. However, PSO converges faster at Generation=1 under the step
pattern. For all patterns, PSO converges to the maximum output power earlier than DE. However, its solution
is not optimal because the output power is not at maximum. Thus, DE has better accuracy and optimum
output power. PSO converges faster but lacks accuracy and has a tendency to be trapped at local peaks.
Therefore, DE is considered the most efficient algorithm to be used as an optimizer for PVAR, given that the

primary objective of this work is to extract the optimal output power from the PV array during PS
occurrences.

Figure 9 shows the representation of PVAR after the DE algorithm performed the optimization
operation. As stated in the previous section, the physical positions of the PV modules remain unchanged.
Otherwise, the electrical connections of the PV modules are changed between the rows in the PVAR to
extract the optimal output power. The results from the reconfiguration also proved that the irradiance
equilibrium technique, as mentioned in the literature, is impractical. The technique should have more options
for PVAR to optimize the reconfiguration and find the best configuration. Lastly, DE-based PVAR is simple,
accurate, practical, and consistent in extracting solar energy under PSC.

7. CONCLUSION
The objective of this work to yield maximum energy from a partially shaded PV array has been
achieved successfully. DE-based PVAR performs well, as proven by various PS patterns. DE-based PVAR
extracted more power than PSO-based PVAR and static configurations. In addition, DE produced low power
losses, thereby helping to maintain the payback period for PV investors. DE-based PVAR is simple and easy
to implement in practice. The PVAR circuit is connected to the I–V tracer to record the data. Furthermore, the
experiment can be conducted under a real irradiance value and PSC. Moreover, DE-based PVAR increases
awareness of the use of green energy. This study is expected to encourage more investors to show interest in
the PV industry.
