diseases in which a person has high
blood sugar, either because the
body does not produce enough
insulin or because cells do not
respond to the insulin that is
produced.

Common Classification of Diabetes
1. Type-1 diabetes - results from the body’s failure to
produce insulin.
2. Type-2 diabetes - results from insulin resistance, a
condition in which cells fail to use insulin
properly, sometimes combined with as absolute
insulin deficiency.
3. Gestational diabetes - when pregnant women, who
have never had diabetes before have a high
blood glucose level during pregnancy.

coronary heart disease
macro vascular disease
Of all the patients with diabetes, only
approximately 10% of the patients have type-1
diabetes and remaining 90% have type-2 diabetes.

Diabetes is being recognized as a global epidemic, with
the potential to cause a worldwide healthcare crisis.
According to International Diabetes Federation (IDF)
Diabetes atlas 2013 estimates
Globally that more than 382 million people have diabetes
China with 98.4 million were affected by Diabetes
One estimation suggest that 592 million people will live
with diabetes in 2035

Diabetes atlas 2013 of IDF estimates that 65.1
million people were affected by diabetes.
India once leads the world with largest number
of diabetic subjects
The shift in age of onset of diabetes to a
younger age in the recent years

Yoga
Indian system of exercises for healthy living, which are
practiced over thousands of years for keeping the human
body physical and mentally fit.
In the past, many definitions were been given to yoga by
various authors.
But simplest definition of Yoga is the oldest known ‘science
of self development’.
Yoga is the greatest gift given to us by our ancestors.
It is cost effective medicine, which has no side effects.
Yoga is a discipline which has a direct impact on physical
and mental health of a person.
It is also used for therapeutic purposes also.
There are many number of school of yoga is available.

The aim of the paper is to throw light on
diabetes management through selected
yogic exercises among type 2 diabetic
patients.
The objective of the study was to suggest
the specific yogic exercises for type 2
diabetic patients.

Methodology
The literature analysis from various resources was used to
collect necessary information.
The literature sources such as books, journals, periodicals and
e-resources such as Scopus, Web of science, Shodhganga are
available in central library, Bharathidasan University,
Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu State, India were used to collect
relevant data.
The investigator after analyzing various yoga studies related
to type 2 diabetes complied the list of yogic practices which
are commonly documented in many studies.

Jain, et. al(1993), Kyizom, et.al., (2010),
Maninder, et.al., (2013), Malhotra, et.al.,
(2004), Malhotra, et.al., (2010), Singh,
et.al., (2008), Shantakumari et.al., (2013),

studies using yoga practices for managing
the type-2 diabetics.

Conclusions
Diabetes is one of the major health and
development challenges of the 21st century.
No country and no sector of any society is immune.
The challenge is to reduce the human and financial
costs through early diagnosis and effective
management and to prevent new cases of diabetes.
The specific yogic practice suggest in this paper
may serve as a model for physician / Yoga experts /
Physical Educators in designing yoga schedule for
diabetic patients.
