ABSTRACT OF “EVALUATION OF THE EFFICACY OF AKULYADI
YOGA IN MADHUMEHA (DIABETES MELLITUS)
Dr. Shivaleela. S. Kalyani1
Abstract: The advancement of industrialization and communication is contributing towards
sedentary life styles; in turn causing chronic non-communicable diseases like Madhumeha
vis-Ă -vis Diabetes Mellitus, etc. in fact Ayurveda is the first life science, which identified,
diagnosed and managed Madhumeha. Madhumeha/DM is the present burning issue alarming
the world. Madhumeha is a disease characterized by Prabhoota, avila mootrata, Tanu and
Mootra madhuryata. Susruta only mentioned that in Madhumeha Sweda becomes Sweet in
nature. Abnormal bi-fold digestion causes aggravation of Vata in turn involves Dushya and
metabolic waste to form Madhumeha. The Madhumeha vis-Ă -vis diabetes mellitus has many
theories of occurrence, even the recent viral influence studies on diabetes. Madhumeha has
Kapha Dosha is the key factor along with Vata. The present study intended to focus on the
disease evaluation i.e. Madhumeha vis-Ă -vis. Diabetes Mellitus management with Akulyadi
yoga as a Shamana Chikitsa. Akulyadi yoga ingredients are hypoglycemic agents collected
from local area and prepared under GMP conditions, weighing about 500mg tablet form.
Patients of Madhumeha fulfilling the criteria of diagnosis were selected in the present study.
The male female ratio in the study is approximately 3:2 patients and 75% patients were
recorded with sedentary life styles. In the present study 60% patients had family history and
rest of the 40% patients had no family history of Madhumeha. Apart from the symptoms
which show high significance in the study the key parameters to assess “glycemic” condition
of Madhumeha exhibit, FBS with a mean difference of 48.605mg and PPBS with mean
difference of 117.18mg for after to before data. This is strong evidence to state that the
Akulyadi yoga is good hypoglycemic agent combination of Ayurveda.

Introduction: Sthoulya is a condition wherein there will be Ayatopachaya of shareera
associated with abnormal increase in Medodhatu. Obesity is defined as an abnormal or
excessive accumulation of fat that pose a risk to health. Obesity has increased at an alarming
rate in recent years & has become one of the major health hazards globally. The prevalence
of obesity has increased threefold within the last 20 years & continues to rise. It is considered
as a lifestyle disorder in which a complex interplay of Genetic, Environmental &
Psychological factors play a major role, especially primary obesity wherein no obvious cause
exists other than an imbalance in energy intake &expenditure. Study was aimed ‘to evaluate
the effect of lekhaneeyamahakashayayoga basti in the management sthoulya’.
Material & Methods: Intervention-Total 50 patients were selected incidentally and assigned
into two groups. In group A, Shaman oushadhi: -Lekhaneeyaganakashaya 15 ml tid before
food with equal quantity of water for 30 days and in group B, lekhaneeyamahakashaya yoga
basti and Lekhaneeyaganakashaya 15 ml tid before food with equal quantity of water along
with the course of basti procedure for 30 days.
Result: All objective and subjective parameters were analyzed using Descriptive statistics,
Repeated Measure ANOVA, Paired samples‘t’ test and contingency co-efficient analysis.
Statistical value showed significant result in most of the parameters by both the groups (p
0.000). There was significant difference in the results between two groups (p 0.000) but
percentage wise group B showed significant results compared to group A.

UNDERSTANDING & APPROACH TO DIABETIC FOOT
Dr.R.V.Shettar1
, Dr.Ashwini2
Abstract: It is estimated that approximately 15% of the more than 150 million people with
diabetes world-wide will at some stage develop diabetic foot ulceration. Foot problems are
indeed a global problem and there is no area in the world that does not report the
development of foot lesions as a consequence mainly of neuropathy and peripheral vascular
disease. Although there have been many developments in recent years which encourage
optimism for future improvement in diabetic foot care, there is still much to be done
Diabetes is known as Madhumeha, which is considered as ‘YAPYA’ in Ayurveda,
means it cannot be cured fully but can be managed through alternative medicines.
Ayurvedic line of treatment shows buoyant management. In our institute management of
diabetic foot is done with Panchavalkala Kashaya for vruna prakshalana and Ropana Taila
pratisarana or Go mutra kshar prakshalan and nimba kalka application along with proper
internal medication depending upon the patient condition.

ROLE OF DIET IN HYPERLIPIDAEMIA
Dr. Gajanana Hegde1
, Dr. Mythrey R.C.2
, Dr. Sneha3
Abstract: Man has adapted himself to the fast paced life by modifying his dietary and
lifestyle preferences to suit the modern era. This has resulted in a state of discrepancy
between the external environment and his internal mechanism causing multitudes of diseases
which are popularly referred as ‘lifestyle diseases’. Diet is the key for health. Ayurveda
which has been around for thousands of years and literally translates as “life science”
considers wholesome diet is the prime cause for growth and development of the body, on the
contrary unwholesome diet causes several diseases. Fast foods, lack of exercise, stress,
various addictions etc. are some of the factors which contribute greatly to such diseases.
These factors generally act by impairing the metabolism of an individual making him prone
to series of disorders. Hyperlipidemia is one such disorder which is identified as a potential
risk factor for multitudes of diseases like cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome and
even hypertension, diabetes, obesity. Hyperlipidemia is a condition which shares a lot of
similarity in pathogenesis and clinical presentation of Medoroga. Medoroga is a condition in
which there is abnormal and unequal distribution and collection of Medo Dhatu in body and
has been classified under Ashta Nindita Purusha. Lowering cholesterol level reduces risk of
heart disease and stroke. Studies show that for every 1% reduction in cholesterol levels there
is a 2% reduction in the rate of heart disease. The treatment strategy is to implement changes
in lifestyle, improved diet, & more exercises. These are the most effective means of both
prevention & treatment. And, in less severe cases, helps in lowering high LDL cholesterol
levels. In addition to eating a healthy diet low in saturated fat, with plenty of whole grains,
fruits, and vegetables some specific foods and supplements may help lower cholesterol and
improve long-term prognosis.

PARKINSON'S DISEASE
Dr. Sagar Sharma
Abstract: Parkinson's disease is a fairly common age-related and progressive disease of brain
cells that affect movement, loss of muscle control, and balance. Usually, the first symptoms
include a tremor (hand, foot, or leg), also termed a "shaking palsy. “Occurrence of this
disease if generally after age of 60 although few develop it an early age of about 30.Men are
about1.5 times more likely to develop it than women. This condition occurs more frequently
in industrialized countries, some have speculated that this condition may be caused by
environmental toxins infections, stress, poor nutrition, and environmental factors such as
chemical and pesticide exposure. Infections, stress, poor nutrition, and environmental factors
such as chemical and pesticide exposure. In general, the disease slowly progresses with more
pronounced symptoms developing over many years. Three key symptoms that develop early
in Parkinson's disease are a tremor, usually on one side of the body (hand, foot, arm, or other
body part) when the person is at rest. The second symptom is rigidity, or resistance to
movement when someone tries to move the person's joint or when the person has difficulty
going from a sitting to a standing position. The third symptom is termed bradykinesia, or
slowness, and small movements. Bradykinesia is seen in people that have small handwriting
(micrographia) and decreased facial expression...In Ayurveda it can be related with
Kampvata (vata roga) and is treated with Oleation (oil medicated with ashwagandha) through
massage (abhyanga) , enema (basti) and regular yoga practices. Present article is to know
about this life style disorder which occurs due to early age life insults .its treatment and
precautions so it can be avoided at later stage of our lives.

MANAGEMENT
Dr. Gajanana Hegde1
, Dr. Rajendra .V2
, Dr. Ashavathi.N.3
Abstract: Anxiety disorders are a group of mental disorders characterized by feeling
of anxiety and fear, where anxiety is a worry about future events and fear is a reaction to
current events. These feelings may cause physical symptoms, such as a racing heart and
shakiness. There are various forms of anxiety disorders, including generalized Anxiety
disorder, Phobic disorder, and Panic disorder. While each has its own characteristics and
symptoms, they all include symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety disorders occur about twice as
often in females than males.
Anxiety disorders are partly genetic but may also be due to drug use including alcohol
and caffeine, as well as withdrawal from certain drugs. They often occur with other mental
disorders, particularly major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, certain personality
disorders and eating disorders. The term anxiety covers four aspects of experiences that an
individual may have mental apprehension, physical tension, physical symptoms and
dissociative anxiety.
The emotions present in anxiety disorders range from simple nervousness to bouts of
terror. There are other psychiatric and medical problems that may mimic the symptoms of an
anxiety disorder, such as hyperthyroidism etc.
Common treatment options include lifestyle changes, psychotherapy and medications have
been mentioned in the management of anxiety disorders, life style factors include Diet,
Exercise/physical activity, Leisure activities including hobbies, Social interaction or
Socialization, Alcohol use and tobacco use etc.

LAVANODAKA SADYOVAMANA AS A SPECIALTY TREATMENT IN
ACUTE TAMAKA SWASA
Dr. Arun T 1
Abstract: In the present era, the population is more exposed to air pollution and Junk foods,
so the incidence of Tamaka swasa (Bronchial Asthma) is also became so common. As per
WHO estimates 2007, there are 300 million people currently suffering from asthma globally
(a number that could increase by further 100 million by 2025) and 255,000 people died of
asthma in 2005.Ayurveda explains Sadyovamana as an effective and specialty treatment in
the management of acute Tamaka Swasa. According to Bruhatrayees vamana is advised as an
immediate measure in Tamaka swasa. Vamana does the expulsion of vikruta kapha from
chest region and from stomach which helps in free movement of Prana Vata and in correction
of Jataragni. So Vamana root outs the major causative factor of the disease. Vamana done
after proper Bahya snehana and swedana immediately gives relief from the symptoms. For
the purpose of snehana, Lavana yuktha Taila is used and Bashpa Sweda will be given.
Lavana yuktha Ushnodaka is used as a vamana dravya due to its acceptance in all prakruti
and its easy availability. This present clinical study discusses the effect of Lavanodaka
vamana in the management of Acute Tamaka Swasa.

MANAGEMENT & TREATMENT OF OBESITY BY FOOT MASSAGE
Dr. Dr. K.T. Vinod Krishnan1
Abstract: Obesity, off course it leads to number of health hazards. Ayurveda never
entertained obesity- Athisthoulya, because it is not easy to treat Athisthoulya comparing with
krisa (slim). Excess food, laziness, lack of exercise and modern style of living are taking
people to obesity and its allied problems.
The problem of highly obese person is that he cannot move nor does anybody exercise
freely, because the overweight always makes restricted movements. In that condition foot
massage – padagata is highly effective to reduce the obesity. Here, in the treatment procedure
of padagata, the obese person is lying on the mattress on a floor and the therapist using his
legs for massage. In this condition the obese person never want to do any active body
movements, but only lying on the floor. We can do whole body padagata massage or a
portion or anga of the body according to the needed area. The time of the treatment varies,
but generally it takes one hour for whole body procedure.
In Kerala foot massage is very popular. It is also useful in neuro - muscular
treatments. It is a part of Ayurvedic and kalari martial treatment. The different massage poses
and positions are useful to get good massage to the entire body of the person. Normally 14
days, 21 days, 28 days are the duration of the course of treatment.

ANAYURVEDIC APPROACH TO THE MANAGEMENT OF
HYPOTHYROIDISM
Dr. A.I. Sankal1
, Dr. A.S. Prasanth2
, Dr. Sanjay M. 3
Abstract: Thyroid gland is one of the most important and sensitive endocrine gland. As it
easily responds to stress and stimuli the global incidence of hypothyroidism is increasing day
by day.
Hypothyroidism is believed to be a common health issue in India, as it is
worldwide. At least one in every 10 adults in India is suffering from hypothyroidism, a study
published in Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism revealed. Female gender and
old age were found to have significant association with hypothyroidism.
We Ayurvedic practioners are least concerned about thyroid disorders. Most of us
think that thyroid disorder is a hard nut to crack and it can be managed only through
allopathic interventions. Due to inadequate success in combating the disease with modern
medications, there is an increasing demand to treat the disease with other systems of
medicine. It is high time to formulate an ayurvedic approach to tackle this issue.
When we go through the symptoms of hypothyroidism we can see that it goes hand in
hand with Kapha Medo Vridhi, dominance of Tamo Guna and some additional symptoms
like Constipation, Muscle cramps and aches, Hair fall and heavy menstrual periods.
Basic line of treatment to tackle Kapha, Medo vridhi. Measures to increase Jataragni
should be our main aim while treating hypothyroidism. Upavasa, Kaphahara aharas,
Udwarthana, RookshaSweda, Vyayama, Yogasanas, Lekhana Vasthi, Vamana, Nasya,
Dhoomapana can be done along with Kaphamedohara Yogas.

HYPOTHYROIDISM IN AYURVEDA WITH CLINICAL STUDY
Dr.D.P.Joshi1
, Dr.Amit Kumar2
Introduction: A thyroid disorder is a medical condition impairing the function of the thyroid
which can be due to failure in feedback mechanism of Hypothalamus – Pituitary – Thyroid
axis or failure in Iodine metabolism. According to the functional and structural presentation,
Thyroid disorders can be classified into three categories: 1. Hyperthyroidism 2.
Hypothyroidism 3. Goitre. Out of these Hypothyroidism is most common now a day.
Hypothyroidism can be understood by Nidana Panchaka of Pandu & Shotha. Shodhana and
Shamana treatment mentioned in Pandu & Shotha along with Galaganda can be planned in
different conditions of Hypothyroidism.
Material & Methods: The signs & symptoms mentioned for Hypothyroidism as well as
Pandu & Shotha are taken as Subjective parameters. Objective parameters are taken as
Thyroid function test, Lipid profile etc. with a case study of 10 patients.
Discussion: The pathogenesis of Hypothyroidism can be analyzed through the Tridosha,
Dushya (Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, and Medo), Srotas & Agni Vikruti (Jatharagni, Bhutagni, and
Dhatvagni). The manifestation of disease is understood through Doshic concept with specific
involvement of Srotas.
The management of Hypothyroidism is followed by analyzing Nidana, Dosha & Avastha of
Vyadhi with specification of Prakriti, Adhisthana & Samuthana of Vyadhi
Result: The significant relief of Symptomatology of Hypothyroidism patients was seen with
a marked improvement in the lab parameters. The dosage of Hormonal therapy got reduced
significantly.
Conclusion: The study reveals: 1. Hypothyroidism in Ayurveda 2. Ayurvedic approach in the

one such disorder which results in early manifestation of the disease which is defined as
heterogeneous metabolic disorder characterized by common features of chronic
hyperglycemia with disturbance of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, and it
associated with deficiency of insulin secretion, or its action or both. Diabetes mellitus is
having similar clinical presentations with madhumeha which is mentioned in ayurvedic

Lifestyle disorders - An Ayurvedic perspective
Dr. R.V.Shettar1
, Dr. Rashmi T.M.2
Abstract: Ayurveda, the life science has given a comprehensive definition for health or
swasthya through the verse samadosha samaagnischa samadhatu malakriyah.... by Acharya
Sushrutha. Also the dos and don’ts one should follow for maintaining this healthy state is
elaborately told in our classics through dinacharya, rutucharya, sadvrutta and achara
rasayana, which not only says about the diet and physical exercises but also deals with
behavioural, social, spiritual and psychological codes of conduct one should follow.
In recent years lifestyle disorders like diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia,
cardiovascular problems and psychological problems have reached alarming proportion
among Indians and are taking people to death before their time.
Thousands of years ago only our acharyas have elaborately explained about the
outcome of this perverted lifestyle, giving causes as gramyaahara, amla, katu, kshara bhojana,
etc, about the pathology and the symptomatology and also the ways to combat these disorders
through shodana and other treatment modalities.
Noteworthy that, Ancient Ayurvedic texts cites the scientific and meticulous
explanations of lifestyle disorders which aid physicians in planning the management.

Diet is the key for health. Ayurveda which has been around for thousands of years and literally translates as “life science” considers wholesome diet is the prime cause for growth and development of the body, on the contrary unwholesome diet causes several diseases. Fast foods, lack of exercise, stress, various addictions etc. are some of the factors which contribute greatly to such diseases. These factors generally act by impairing the metabolism of an individual making him prone to series of disorders. Hyperlipidemia is one such disorder which is identified as a potential risk factor for multitudes of diseases like cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome and even hypertension, diabetes, obesity. Hyperlipidemia is a condition which shares a lot of similarity in pathogenesis and clinical presentation of Medoroga. Medoroga is a condition in which there is abnormal and unequal distribution and collection of Medo Dhatu in body and has been classified under Ashta Nindita Purusha. Lowering cholesterol level reduces risk of heart disease and stroke. Studies show that for every 1% reduction in cholesterol levels there is a 2% reduction in the rate of heart disease. The treatment strategy is to implement changes in lifestyle, improved diet, & more exercises. These are the most effective means of both prevention & treatment. And, in less severe cases, helps in lowering high LDL cholesterol levels. In addition to eating a healthy diet low in saturated fat, with plenty of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables some specific foods and supplements may help lower cholesterol and improve long-term prognosis. • 19. MANAGEMENT & TREATMENT OF OBESITY BY FOOT MASSAGE Dr. Dr. K.T. Vinod Krishnan1 Abstract: Obesity, off course it leads to number of health hazards. Ayurveda never entertained obesity- Athisthoulya, because it is not easy to treat Athisthoulya comparing with krisa (slim). Excess food, laziness, lack of exercise and modern style of living are taking people to obesity and its allied problems. The problem of highly obese person is that he cannot move nor does anybody exercise freely, because the overweight always makes restricted movements. In that condition foot massage – padagata is highly effective to reduce the obesity. Here, in the treatment procedure of padagata, the obese person is lying on the mattress on a floor and the therapist using his legs for massage. In this condition the obese person never want to do any active body movements, but only lying on the floor. We can do whole body padagata massage or a portion or anga of the body according to the needed area. The time of the treatment varies, but generally it takes one hour for whole body procedure. In Kerala foot massage is very popular. It is also useful in neuro - muscular treatments. It is a part of Ayurvedic and kalari martial treatment. The different massage poses and positions are useful to get good massage to the entire body of the person. Normally 14 days, 21 days, 28 days are the duration of the course of treatment. ___________________________________________________________________________ PG Scholar1 , Department of Panchkarma, SSR Ayurvedic Medical College Inchal, Karnataka Email: amiyaayurveda@ gmail.com Contact no: 09446239252
  • 20. ANAYURVEDIC APPROACH TO THE MANAGEMENT OF HYPOTHYROIDISM Dr. A.I. Sankal1 , Dr. A.S. Prasanth2 , Dr. Sanjay M. 3 Abstract: Thyroid gland is one of the most important and sensitive endocrine gland. As it easily responds to stress and stimuli the global incidence of hypothyroidism is increasing day by day. Hypothyroidism is believed to be a common health issue in India, as it is worldwide. At least one in every 10 adults in India is suffering from hypothyroidism, a study published in Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism revealed. Female gender and old age were found to have significant association with hypothyroidism. We Ayurvedic practioners are least concerned about thyroid disorders. Most of us think that thyroid disorder is a hard nut to crack and it can be managed only through allopathic interventions. Due to inadequate success in combating the disease with modern medications, there is an increasing demand to treat the disease with other systems of medicine. It is high time to formulate an ayurvedic approach to tackle this issue. When we go through the symptoms of hypothyroidism we can see that it goes hand in hand with Kapha Medo Vridhi, dominance of Tamo Guna and some additional symptoms like Constipation, Muscle cramps and aches, Hair fall and heavy menstrual periods. Basic line of treatment to tackle Kapha, Medo vridhi. Measures to increase Jataragni should be our main aim while treating hypothyroidism. Upavasa, Kaphahara aharas, Udwarthana, RookshaSweda, Vyayama, Yogasanas, Lekhana Vasthi, Vamana, Nasya, Dhoomapana can be done along with Kaphamedohara Yogas.
