This document summarizes the key characteristics of production systems developed by Michelle Lochan and Veeshalla Maharaj. The plantation system had several advantages, including regular and efficient production, uniformly high quality products, planning for depreciation, and scientific research. It was focused on monocropping for export, foreign-owned, and bureaucratically organized. Plantations relied on metropolitan countries and had vertical integration. The system patterned relationships between people and land use, classified people by status, and gave rise to the peasantry of the region by formally defining social relationships. The plantation system was both a social and economic system.
