Mobile financial services allow users to conduct banking transactions through mobile phones, including payments, money transfers, and balance checks. Developing countries have been early adopters, with services like M-Pesa in Africa and Bkash in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, Bkash dominates the mobile financial services market with 58% share, enabling services like person-to-person transfers, cash deposits and withdrawals, and bill payments. This technology has expanded access to financial services for 78% of Bangladeshis who own mobile phones but may be unbanked.
