Exploring the use of signals in the venture emergence of new technology-based...University of Stuttgart
Presentation at 20th ICE Conference – IEEE TMC Europe Conference 23-25 June 2014, Bergamo, Italy.
Abstract: New technology-based firms have to deal with the
technology development and market search challenges at the same time. The venture emergence in technology entrepreneurship symbolizes that the new venture has been able to find the right fit for its technology and becomes an operating business. The complex nature and dynamism of technology markets suggest the need to look beyond the venture resources in order to explain how new ventures overcomes the market uncertainty towards their technological products, and become operational businesses. We use a multiple case study of three new technology-based firms to explore the use of signals as market creation strategies in the context of venture emergence. The results suggest that entrepreneurs rely on market, technology and social capital signaling to reduce the uncertainty and advance towards venture emergence. This research holds implications for researchers interested in further exploring the integration of marketing, signaling and entrepreneurship theories and for entrepreneurs interested in overcoming the market uncertainty towards their technology, products and venture performance.

Presented by Christine Storry - PIPEN Project Manager
Presentation by Julie Collins, Apsiz Services at the Healthcare Business Connect Lancashire SME workshop - Bids and tenders at Society1, Preston on Thursday 22 November 2018.
In December 2014 the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) published, ‘Sustainable development in higher education - HEFCE’s role to date and a framework for its future actions’, outlining some of the ways higher education can contribute to sustainable development. The document included a framework for HEFCE’s support for the sector, whilst encompassing their earlier policy statements on sustainable development and carbon reduction. This will also have a bearing on future funding.
Key points from the document:
Protecting and enhancing quality of life for current and future generations is central to sustainable development. There are social, environmental and economic dimensions to this, and the benefits and the challenges are considerable.
Higher education is working to address these challenges from a unique position in society. Its institutions can play a substantial role through teaching and research, through influence on staff and students, through business operations, and through the sustainability of their campuses. We want sustainable development to be central to higher education.
In 2010, HEFCE, Universities UK and GuildHE demonstrated co-leadership by publishing carbon reduction targets for higher education in England. These targets were based on extensive research and wide consultation. The overall sector target is reduction of Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 34 per cent by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050, against a 1990 baseline.
The higher education sector has demonstrated strong commitment to these targets, with each higher education institution producing a carbon management plans which move the sector substantially towards the afore mentioned targets. Research published by HEFCE in 2010 showed that for the 45 universities with data for both years, emissions per full-time equivalent student were on average 39 per cent lower in 2005 than in 1990.
Institutions have risen to the challenge of reducing environmental impacts by setting themselves stretching targets for carbon reduction. They have made significant investments and altered their ways of working, monitoring their progress with increasingly sophisticated systems whilst disseminating good practice and helping institutions learn from each other.
Although these achievements are creditable, more needs to be done if the sector’s contribution to internationally agreed target carbon reductions is to be achieved.
Sustainable Education provided the platform for discussion and dissemination of good practice whilst also highlighting the tools and systems in place to ensure your institution adheres to carbon reduction targets and becomes economically and environmentally sustainable.
II-SDV 2017: What is Innovation and how can we measure it?Dr. Haxel Consult
Innovation means many different things to many people. Ask five people and you will likely get ten answers. But all agree that it is a key driver behind the success of organizations, the growth of economies and provides major contributions in addressing global problems. This presentation will examine various analytical methods and possible metrics for measuring innovation and determining relative performance of organizations. The challenges involved in assessing innovation and how these can be addressed will be explored. The pros and cons associated with the metrics identified will also be discussed with a view to identifying a practical method for assessing innovation.
This study by SAS, targeted organisations that recognised they were well on their way to integrating IoT in their operations. We spoke to 75 teams who could draw from their experience of recent deployment or a sizeable proof-of-concept. These expert interviews were framed to draw out how deployments were scoped and sponsored, resourced and delivered.

Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

• Differences by category: healthcare & works suppliers: too much emphasis on price; Social and

councils vs. the NHS.”
“[Procurers] pretend to be after innovation but they're after the lowest price.”
“If you always ask for what you always had you'll always get what you always got. I.e.
technical and performance specifications don't allow for significantly innovative
approaches.”
“There is no direct communication between the bidder and the 'user', all is via the
restrictive interface that is the procurer. This results in poor specification and ineffective
procurement. As a bidder, you need this dialog to innovate effectively.”
“The procurer has already defined a specification that could be better specified by
consultation with the potential private sector providers.”
“[It’s] All to do with the willingness and quality of the procurers. Some of them are like
sending a non driver to buy a car, others are like Jenson Button.”

18. Procurement of Innovation: Challenges
for Measurement and Indicators I
• Procurement data poor quality
– Not good records; poor relevance of functional to
industrial categories
• Public sector fragmented
– UK 30,000 procurement organisations; no central portal
(at time of UNDERPINN study)
• Many purchases below legal threshold
– Majority of purchases currently falling outside threshold,
so difficult to research

19. Procurement of Innovation: Challenges
for Measurement and Indicators II
• Public sector market characteristics
– Some single suppliers, some supply to many organisations:
inherent difficulty distinguishing which procurement was
instrumental
• Diversity of supply firms
– Increasing role of non-profits but they have different
innovation dynamics
• Innovation by suppliers difficult to attribute to
procurement by public sector
– Many firms have multiple supplies to many CAs and a mix
of public and private clients
