- 13. Example Mr. Smith teaches 5th grade Social Studies. He just came back from a Social Studies conference where he attended a session on Google Earth and was very impressed. Mr. Smith covers a unit on the US State Capitals. He usually conducts several activities over a week’s time. The activities, including a State Bee, that the students really enjoy. Come test time the students do very well on Mr. Smith’s test US State Capital Test. This year he decides to have students create a Google Earth tour of the US State Capitals. Mr. Smith spends several extra days showing students how to use Google Earth and to present their tours. Overall students like the program but some find it frustrating. When Mr. Smith gives the test he finds the results are below average and he is behind schedule.
- 14. Example #2 Mr. Hall is teaching 10th Grade American Literature and is halfway through his first year as a teacher. He finds students fail to meet his expectations, are disruptive, unmotivated and he has trouble keeping their attention. They are going start a unit on Tom Sawyer. To address this problem, he plans to have his students create movie trailers for the book, Tom Sawyer.
- 15. Example #3 Ms. Carelock is a Middle School Earth Science Teacher who is currently teaching the Phases of the Moon. In previous years, she noticed students doing poorly on the determining the phases of the moon diagram and believes students are having a difficulty understanding the relationship between the moon, sun and earth. She normally conducts a hands on lab, and other activities. Tests show students do below average on the moon phase identification. She locates several simulations and allows students to work on them in pairs, and assigns homework around these simulations.

I kiddingly said to him, You know…Technology is like getting a new puppy….i then saw Marley and me, and then I was. Who doesn’t think puppies are cute, sometimes they are so enamoured they often over look that they are a responsibility. It is not until it is too late they find this out and they get to this…
- Technology is the same. Teachers are often wowed by what technology can offer, they often use technology. It can often led to a frustrating experience. Technology, like a puppy, is a responsibility. Today I am going to talk about determining the advantage will give you, in the hopes your technology experiences are positivie.
- Why is there such an emphasize on technology?Technology gives us an advantage we did not have before.Technology Integration is not about quanity, it is not about the type……it is about how you use it and why???
- Why is using technology better then a non technology solution. Normally I have students create a poster of a president in class, how might having them create a wiki of a president provide a benefit, or advantage. Am I willing to sacrifice the additional time on showing students how to create a wiki? If you find that technology offers you and your students an advantage you are more likely use it again. Technology in the classroom has been touted as a huge benefit for teachers for years, but instead of benefit, they found frustration.
- Technology is very prescriptive. It is important to understand the problem you are trying to solve by using technology. This afternoon’s discussion questions is to reflect on your year, and think about learning problems students encounter, or even frustrations. This should be your starting point.In my previous life, I taught in the middle and high school science in Philadelphia. One of the courses I taught was earth science. Every year like so many middle schoolers we would cover the earth’s place in space, and cover the Phases of the Moon. We would do a lab, review and everything would be fine, students would be able to easily identify images of waning gibbous, waxing crescent….However, when it came to the test they would bomb it. Students I thought would do well, did horrendous. I saw this as a learning problem. I thought it applying a technological solution would be a possibility. I was able to locate some online simulations, and other online resources. The simulations enabled to students to control the phases of the moon, see it from different perspectives. It did not require low effort.
- The process of technology is often begins with the technology (solution), with no thought of the problem. This week you are learning about many new technologies (solutions), be sure you are applying them to a defined learning problem.Mr. Smith teaches 5th grade Social Studies. - When possible look for evidence, to make sure a problem really exists. Do students score poorly on a specific or a specific concept. Surveys can be a good way to informally measure student’s attitudes.Are students not turning in assignments, trouble keeping focus.
