2. What is Problem-based Learning
(PBL) ?
“Problem-based” ?
◦ Ill-defined
◦ Authentic
◦ Engaging
“Learning”
◦ Student centered
◦ Research focused
3. What?
Problem Statement
United for Brownsville—a collaborative of
families and professionals who are
improving the early childhood system in
Brownsville, Brooklyn—has put out a call
for evidence-based projects developed
using design thinking principles that will
transform the places and spaces where
children live, learn, and grow. Each project
must be designed alongside the
community and feature evidence from
psychological science to justify how it
impacts cognitive development.
10. Agenda
Individual Work
◦ Study your assigned theory
◦ Read related textbook chapter(s)
Expert Group
◦ Discuss theoretical bases and share notes
◦ Create your mini lesson for sharing on
Blackboard
Design Team
◦ Share Expert Group expertise with your home group
members
◦ Brainstorm ideas for design
◦ Create your design
◦ Create your presentation for sharing on Blackboard

12. Designing for Cognitive
Development PBL
Learning Objectives:
• Demonstrate an understanding of these 3
theories of cognitive development:
• Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory
• Piaget’s stage theory
• Information processing theory
• Demonstrate an understanding of the
design thinking process
• Apply the knowledge of these 3 theories
of cognitive development to the design of
a project to improve children’s cognitive
development
13. How?
Formative Assessments:
• Small group mini lesson presentation on
one of the 3 theories (recorded using
VoiceThread and shared).
• To do this, students will join assigned
“Expert Groups” and will need to
research their theory and present a 10-
minute overview presentation, with an
eye toward knowledge that will be
helpful in designing for United for
Brownsville.
• Two Expert Groups will be assigned to
each theory.
14. How?
Formative Assessments (cont.):
• Within the small group project
presentation on the design idea and
process tailored for United for Brownsville.
• To do this, students will join their assigned
“Design Team.” Each Design Team will
feature students who were in each of the 3
different types of Expert Groups.
• During the process, there will be a check of
the students’ shared work folder for the
instructor to look at the team’s progress.
15. How?
Summative Assessment:
• Small group project presentation on the
design idea and process tailored for United
for Brownsville.
• Students will have a rubric to help them
know some key points to address.
