This document summarizes a workshop on designing a passion product using lean startup methods in 3 hours. The workshop covered defining users and their needs through personas and brainstorming uses and features. It emphasized the importance of rapidly prototyping and testing ideas to validate assumptions. Participants worked in pairs to develop a product narrative, dashboard of metrics, and 3-minute pitch for a minimum viable product. The goal was to have an initial concept that could be built upon after validating it with potential customers.
Top 6 ways developers mess up on User Experience (and how to avoid them) [SF ...Kate Rutter
Oh those pesky UI problems! Sadly, only a few are easily answerable. This talk does that and then frames two important underlying beliefs that impact how developers and designers can get the most of of UX by teasing apart UX and UI (they are *so* not the same thing!) and by broadening the perspective on what makes great products (not just great code.)
Realify your Secret Idea with Lean Startup MethodsKate Rutter
Admit it. Inside you there is a secret product idea. Yet it falls prey to that deadly statement: “Someday, when I have more time…”
In an action-packed 180 minutes, you’ll “realify” it: get that idea out and into the world. This session is about skill-building through personal expression; a structured and engaging way to get hands-on with design methods from the Lean UX / Lean Startup world and explore an idea that is personally meaningful.
These techniques are directly and immediately applicable to UX design in the enterprise, startups and mid-sized companies.

Leanconf 2014: Applying Lean Start-up Methods in Big Organisations – Does Thi...Leanconf
In Deutsche Telekom we started to apply Lean Start-up methods one year ago. During our talk we will share the challenges we face and how we tackle them while introducing entrepreneurial methods in our big organisation.
Deutsche Telekom has applied Lean Start-up methods in product development and technology innovations projects. During those projects we face various challenges - sometimes based on human factors, sometimes associated to surrounding conditions. For example: Product managers who have worked differently during their entire working experience are very difficult to convince to apply the Lean Start-up way, especially while everyone else around them is still working as usual. Another Example: Publishing a fake sale is rather difficult in a company with an established brand and protected trademark, where passing several decision gates is required before publishing new content on our web sites is allowed. How we address these kinds of issues will be part of our talk.
On top of accompanying selected projects with our Lean Start-up knowhow, we are in the process of transforming Deutsche Telekom as a whole: we want to change our traditional way of working within product development towards the Lean Start-up way. For that reason, we are running internal trainings and workshops targeted at business developers and product managers as well at the middle management. In our talk, we will share our experience on how we caught interest and targeted the ‘right’ people within our organisation. Despite some first success of our transition towards entrepreneurial methods, we discover much reluctance to new working methods and huge scepticism regarding the question ‘Can Lean Start-up methods be applied to a big organisation such as Deutsche Telekom?’. We believe in a successful adoption of entrepreneurial methods and we will share our plan on how to progress with this very important transition for Deutsche Telekom.
Blueprint for a Creative Culture [Commonwealth Club of SF, Mar 2011]Kate Rutter
This talk was held at the Commonwealth Club of SF on March 23, 2011. It challenges the notion that company cultures must be dry, static, inhuman and impersonal to be professional. The Creative Culture Blueprint shows what elements create, feed and support a creative culture. Also included are examples of activities that can be used to unlock static cultures to be more creative.
Designing For Discovery With Faceted NavigationJim Kalbach
Faceted navigation has become very popular in the last decade. It’s seen as way to improve the findability of information on many sites, particularly those with large collections of products or documents. The design of real-world faceted navigation systems, however, proves to be more intricate than people first assume, and designers must be aware of many details.
This workshop covers principles of faceted classification and shows you how to use facets in web design. Many examples of faceted navigation will be presented and discussed. A clear, structured framework for understanding the individual components is presented to help you understand all the decisions involved. The topics are brought to life through several hands-on exercises.
Features
Using facets. After a brief overview of facets, we’ll discuss how to plan out their implementation.
Interface design. You’ll learn about the layout, display, and interaction with facets in detail. We’ll examine real-world examples, and you’ll apply what you’ve learnt in hands-on exercises.
Advanced topics. You will also be exposed to advanced topics in faceted navigation design, selecting multiple values, grouping, and more.
At the first Sketchnotes-SF meetup, we practiced our sketchnoting skillz and talked through the resulting work. This is the practice-session deck. The evening was informative and fun. Details on the meetup are here: http://www.meetup.com/Sketchnotes-SF/events/131373162/
The Power of Visual Notetaking :: XYC @Singularityu [Tue Jul 9, 2014]Kate Rutter
Visual note-taking is a powerful tool for design professionals who want to capture ideas and communicate them effectively. Known as sketchnoting or graphic recording, this practical technique enables you to capture key points of an idea, recall content and take action on new learnings. Whether used as a personal tool or as a facilitation method for group collaboration, visual notes are a powerful way to create memorable, engaging info summaries.
In this hands-on workshop, participants in the XYC youth summer program developed a visual vocabulary of images of things and concepts, learned simple lettering techniques, and got familiar with structuring information into common layout patterns. Then they brought it all together by capturing visual notes in real time from video, and got feedback and inspiration in a group critique.
If you're new to visual notetaking, this is a fun and fast way to get started. If you're a seasoned sketcher or visual note-taker, you can review this deck to advance your practice.

The deck of my talk at UX London 2013 on designing addicted products.
In a similar way to an addict, we are increasing getting rewards from our consumption of products - we simply have much more than we need. As designers, we can find strategies to cure this addiction or to push for a behavioural change. Still, most of it is in vane.
However, What if things themselves can be designed with a goal, which we may not understand or agree with, but that might bring to a long term positive change? What if we shifted perspective and the products themselves were instead addicted to be used - the primary concern of any product from its own perspective?
This is the story of Brad and a network of Addicted toasters, an experiment that explores the conversation between a product with its own goal and its owner and the implication coming from this product being part of a network of things and people.

There is a new approach to growing startups popularized by Eric Ries: "Lean Startup". Basic idea is that each startup should be as flexible as possible, should create rapid prototypes and test market assumptions using these prototypes. Flexibility is key to success (or at least to find out that your idea is not that good :-).
Bayram and Oleg will explain how this approach is being used in Empatika and will present a real story about Squeek app they developed and marketed.
Key topics covered:
1. Lean Startup - a new approach to growing startups
2. Flexibility is key to success
3. Pivots: don't afraid to fail
4. Key performance indicators (KPI) for an IT startup
6. Lessons Learned and action items.

But when you work on digital products working with waterfall methodologies is way too risky. Worst: you start building something on wrong assumptions and it takes forever to deliver.Either you are a big enterprise or a small startup, building great mobile products “per sé” doesn’t make any sense. Where can we find a sweet spot that allows teams to grow their skills and experiences together?
In this conference talk, Kate shares a model for creating a culture of continuous learning in companies, discusses leading a successful UX adult learning program based on a framework of how people learn, and give concrete examples of learning tools you can apply immediately in your organization.

How can we stay up-to-date in a world constantly in flux?
This talk explores techniques to build a culture of continuous learning in the workplace for new and seasoned professionals who want to stay current on emerging tools and avoid stagnation. Learn techniques that UX teams can use to be agile and resilient in the face of ever-evolving technologies.
This deck is from the sketchnote workshop part of the "Let's Sketch Tech" online meetup. Sketch-noting instruction was followed by the lightning talk, "Why AI Thinks You’re a Toaster (and Why You Should Care)" by IBM Watson engagement lead, B Cavello. After a short round of post-noting, we had an online gallery to share the work. Check the Tagboard at https://tagboard.com/letssketchtoaster/473159 for the work.
Sketchapalooza [UX Week 2018, August 2018]Kate Rutter
In this workshop at UX Week 2018, participants got hands-on with pen and paper to unleash the power of sketching. From design research to ideation to prioritization to communicating design directions, imagery and hand-created artifacts are effective ways to dramatically improve ideas and increase understanding and stakeholder buy-in.
We surveyed the low-fidelity sketching landscape, exploring practices like graphic recording, sketchnoting, urban sketching, lettering, scenario sketching and sketching screens & UI. And we got hands-on to develop and enhance our visual vocabulary and practiced sketching to think vs. sketching to communicate. (Spoiler: they are not the same thing.)
What topics were covered?
* When and why to sketch
* How sketching amplifies and improves UX work
* A summary of practices and methods, including graphic recording, sketchnoting, observational sketching, symbolic sketching, scenarios, storyboards, interfaces and flows.
* The tools of the trade and when/how to use them
* Sketching basics and tricks to work fast and accurately
* Sketching to think vs. sketching to communicate
* How to match the right level of fidelity for the right level of feedback
* Collaborative sketching and group participation

Transforming Brand Perception and Boosting Profitabilityaaryangarg12
In today's digital era, the dynamics of brand perception, consumer behavior, and profitability have been profoundly reshaped by the synergy of branding, social media, and website design. This research paper investigates the transformative power of these elements in influencing how individuals perceive brands and products and how this transformation can be harnessed to drive sales and profitability for businesses.
Through an exploration of brand psychology and consumer behavior, this study sheds light on the intricate ways in which effective branding strategies, strategic social media engagement, and user-centric website design contribute to altering consumers' perceptions. We delve into the principles that underlie successful brand transformations, examining how visual identity, messaging, and storytelling can captivate and resonate with target audiences.
Methodologically, this research employs a comprehensive approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Real-world case studies illustrate the impact of branding, social media campaigns, and website redesigns on consumer perception, sales figures, and profitability. We assess the various metrics, including brand awareness, customer engagement, conversion rates, and revenue growth, to measure the effectiveness of these strategies.
The results underscore the pivotal role of cohesive branding, social media influence, and website usability in shaping positive brand perceptions, influencing consumer decisions, and ultimately bolstering sales and profitability. This paper provides actionable insights and strategic recommendations for businesses seeking to leverage branding, social media, and website design as potent tools to enhance their market position and financial success.
