Purpose
The depth integrating sampler is used to take depth integrated suspended sediment samples
in rivers. The instrument is winch operated from a bridge or a cable-way.
Introduction
Several streamlined, cable-suspended, depth-integrating samplers are available on the
market for use from a boat, from a bridge or from a cable-way. The suspended sediment
sample is collected in a fixed-volume rigid sample container (bottle) that can be replaced
easily by an empty container. The US D-74 is suitable for many low and medium flow
situations. This medium-weight sampler has a cast bronze body, originally designed for use
with a round pint milk bottle sample container. The head of the sampler is hinged to permit
access to the sample container. The sediment sample reaches the container via a nozzle
which is aligned into the flow. Different nozzles may be needed for keeping sufficient
efficiency. Tail vanes align the instrument into the stream flow. A reel with a 3 mm cable is
needed for safe operation. An intake nozzle extends horizontally from the nose of the
sampler body. While sampling, the air present in the bottle escapes through a streamlined
exhaust mounted on the side of the sampler head. The sampler is quite easy to operate and
to maintain.
Conditions & Requirements
• The sampler shall have a streamlined body.
• No bolts or other parts, other then for taking the sample, shall protrude from the body.
• The sample shall remain intact while hoisting the sampler.
• The sampler shall have a well established and proven correction factor.
• Spares and tools required for routine maintenance shall be part of the delivery.
• The sampler shall be equipped with an exhaust in order to allow the air to escape from
the sample container without disturbing the in-flowing sample.
• The sampler shall be easy to handle.
• No sample shall leak from the container while hoisting and handling the instrument.
• The suspension mechanism of the sampler and in particular the suspension bar shall be
well designed, ensuring a perfect balance of the sampler at all stages of filling. The
nozzle shall be kept horizontal and in the flow direction.
• When the sampler touches the riverbed, then the nozzle shall remain horizontally and at
a constant height above the riverbed.
• When the sampler touches the riverbed, it shall produce little disturbance to the bed
sediment.
• The nozzle efficiency coefficients of the nozzle (& sampler) shall be made available.

Depth integrating winch operated

  • 1. 20.004 DEPTH INTEGRATING, WINCH OPERATED Approval Date: 20 May 1998 Reviewed on : 23 October 2007 Version: 1 Equipment Specification: DEPTH INTEGRATING, WINCH OPERATED Version 1 20.004-1/4 Purpose The depth integrating sampler is used to take depth integrated suspended sediment samples in rivers. The instrument is winch operated from a bridge or a cable-way. Introduction Several streamlined, cable-suspended, depth-integrating samplers are available on the market for use from a boat, from a bridge or from a cable-way. The suspended sediment sample is collected in a fixed-volume rigid sample container (bottle) that can be replaced easily by an empty container. The US D-74 is suitable for many low and medium flow situations. This medium-weight sampler has a cast bronze body, originally designed for use with a round pint milk bottle sample container. The head of the sampler is hinged to permit access to the sample container. The sediment sample reaches the container via a nozzle which is aligned into the flow. Different nozzles may be needed for keeping sufficient efficiency. Tail vanes align the instrument into the stream flow. A reel with a 3 mm cable is needed for safe operation. An intake nozzle extends horizontally from the nose of the sampler body. While sampling, the air present in the bottle escapes through a streamlined exhaust mounted on the side of the sampler head. The sampler is quite easy to operate and to maintain. Conditions & Requirements • The sampler shall have a streamlined body. • No bolts or other parts, other then for taking the sample, shall protrude from the body. • The sample shall remain intact while hoisting the sampler. • The sampler shall have a well established and proven correction factor. • Spares and tools required for routine maintenance shall be part of the delivery. • The sampler shall be equipped with an exhaust in order to allow the air to escape from the sample container without disturbing the in-flowing sample. • The sampler shall be easy to handle. • No sample shall leak from the container while hoisting and handling the instrument. • The suspension mechanism of the sampler and in particular the suspension bar shall be well designed, ensuring a perfect balance of the sampler at all stages of filling. The nozzle shall be kept horizontal and in the flow direction. • When the sampler touches the riverbed, then the nozzle shall remain horizontally and at a constant height above the riverbed. • When the sampler touches the riverbed, it shall produce little disturbance to the bed sediment. • The nozzle efficiency coefficients of the nozzle (& sampler) shall be made available.
