You have talked your development team and relevant people into using containers, and everything is going great. Now you need to deploy your app, but how do you do it? How do you manage multiple environments like Staging and Production? How do you get your container images where they need to go? Do you need a full stack of orchestration like Mesos or Kubernetes? Each application and deployment situation is different, but one tool can help small and medium-sized applications manage all these containers floating around. Since its initial release, Rancher has included cross-host networking for containers. For storage, we introduced the Convoy storage driver framework, which enabled Docker containers to access persistent storage volumes implemented by NFS or EBS. Now, in Rancher 1.2 we're introducing fully pluggable networking and storage frameworks for Rancher environments. In our September 2016 Online meetup we introduced this concept and demonstrated how to deploy new Rancher storage services.

But a growing number of users are starting to run it locally on developer machines as a fully-contained DevOps platform. A hands-on guide to deploying applications in Rancher's new Kubernetes environments Over the last few months our team at Rancher Labs has been adding support for Kubernetes natively within Rancher. Our implementation of Kubernetes takes advantage of Rancher’s platform orchestration, simple UI, access control, networking and storage capabilities to deliver simple to deploy Kubernetes clusters for managing applications. In our February meetup we introduced this new support, and discussed how these Kubernetes environments compare with our native Docker environments and help you understand when and how each can be used to power your containers. Our new support for Kubernetes will be available in Rancher in our next major release in March. In our April Rancher Online meetup, Darren Shepherd and Shannon Williams walked through a handful of best practices for running your apps successfully using Docker and Rancher. We have posted a recording and the slides below. During the video, we discuss how to leverage web hooks to scale up and redeploy environments using Cowbell, how to manage secrets with Vault, how to deploy a dashboard for capacity management with Prometheus, and how to clean up orphaned images and volumes with Janitor. We were also joined by Rancher Dir. of DevOps Bill Maxwell who introduces a new Rancher integration with Vault. Recently we announced the availability of Mesos as a new type of environment in Rancher. In our June online meetup, we provided an introduction to Mesos, and demonstrated how to easily deploy Mesos environments on any infrastructure in minutes. We also discussed some of the workloads that are well suited for Mesos, and demonstrate how to easily deploy Mesos frameworks such as Marathon and Chronos.

Improving WordPress Development and Deployments with Docker

This presentation will discuss how we use Docker to improve our development and deployment of WordPress sites. The presentation describes how themes and plugins can be developed locally and then packaged into a Docker container. A Jenkins pipeline is used with Git to automatically run a build and deploy the new WordPress container onto a test server where automated Selenium scripts are executed. Based on the results of the tests the container is tagged as a production candidate. A deployment pipeline is then used to execute a Blue-Green deployment on the latest update to production. Once the deployment is proven to work through automated testing the router is switched to the new deployment. The overall process helps reduce the risk of production updates to WordPress, themes, and plugins as well as reduce security concerns caused by randomly installing plugins by users. The presentation will also discuss strategies for running a WordPress database both outside and inside of a Docker container. It will discuss the pros and cons of each approach. At ING we needed a way to implement Data science models from exploration into production. I will do this talk from my experience on the exploration and production Hadoop environment as a senior Ops engineer. For this we are using OpenShift to run Docker containers that connect to the big data Hadoop environment. During this talk I will explain why we need this and how this is done at ING. Also how to set up a docker container running a data science model using Hive, Python, and Spark. I’ll explain how to use Docker files to build Docker images, add all the needed components inside the Docker image, and how to run different versions of software in different containers. In the end I will also give a demo of how it runs and is automated using Git with webhook connecting to Jenkins and start the docker service that will connect to a big data Hadoop environment.
