1. Warm –up – pens, paper, journal, note
(note) A Bill : a proposal for a legislation / the start of a law’s life.
(Discuss) Your going to be spilt into four teams, the four corners of the
room. Two teams shall be creating a new reward in class while two
teams create a new punishment in class. Which would you prefer to be
part of?
Homework
Will be action report.
Skills
Expressing ideas and being creative.
Today's Objectives
1. Examine how a law is made.
2. Experiment by creating a reward and punishment in class.
Heading: Democracy 7 Date:
2. We are going to read pages 232 to 233 of the book.
We will take notes along the way explaining how a
law is made.
In your teams, you shall then follow the same
process and attempt to create a law.
Plan for today
3. I will need about ten people to read today. Raise hands after each paragraph.
(note) A bill must pass through the Dáil, the Seanad and the
President to become a law. It follows the following stages:
(1) Introduction, debate and discussion. Everyone must
understand what the bill is about.
(2) Adding changes called amendments. These usually help
special interests or specific groups.
(3) Going to the other house of Oireachtas and repeating the
process
(4) Signed by President to become an act or law.
(Discuss – start thinking about what reward/punishment you
want, then share with the team).
Page 232-233 reading and writing notes
4. Majority rule is key. Any arguments are settled by a show of hands
and votes. Follow the following process.
(1) Discuss ideas and settle on one idea to work on. You should
write this idea down on a blank piece of paper to share later.
(2) Each individual is allowed to add one thing to the idea (if it
helps them especially, all the better. The likelihood of me vetoing
gets higher the crazier the idea though.)
In 10 minutes, you shall pass your idea (written) to the other team.
One person will introduce what is written on the page. They shall
then discuss it and see can they add any more amendments.
The final products (4) will then be presented to me and the class
and I shall accept or decline them.
Task – Create a new law.
5. Continue your action project report.
Remember presentation will be very
important.
You should have some ideas written on an
introduction, committees, skills,
information gathered and reflections.
