Design and fabrication of A Ku-band low noise amplifier using FR-4 substrateTELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
The low noise amplifier (LNA) plays an important role in many communication systems, especially at the receiver’s front-ends. In modern RF designs, The LNA is usually fabricated on a microstrip printed circuit board (PCB) due to its simplicity and ability of integrating flexibly with other components in a receiving circuitry unit. At frequencies lower than 6 GHz, the most prevalent substrate material for a microstrip LNA is FR-4 while at higher frequencies of over 10 GHz, it is challenging to design the LNA using this material without causing considerable losses to the RF signal. There are many works related to design microstrip LNA at high frequencies, however, the dielectric substrates used in most of them were high-cost materials for low dielectric loss. This paper introduces an LNA topology using the common, low-cost FR-4 substrate which can be operated in Ku-band for applications such as small satellites’ receivers, with the expected noise figure of lower than 1 dB, gain of around 10 dB and the return loss of around -10 dB. The stepped impedance matching technique has been used for transmission line optimization. The simulated and measured results are presented.
Dynamic Beamforming Optimization for Anti-Jamming and Hardware Fault RecoveryJonathan Becker
In recent years there has been a rapid increase in the number of wireless devices for both commercial and defense applications. Such unprecedented demand has increased device cost and complexity and also added a strain on the spectrum utilization of wireless communication systems. This thesis addresses these issues, from an antenna system perspective, by developing new techniques to dynamically optimize adaptive beamforming arrays for improved anti-jamming and reliability.
Available frequency spectrum is a scarce resource, and therefore increased interference will occur as the wireless spectrum saturates. To mitigate unintentional interference, or intentional interference from a jamming source, antenna arrays are used to focus electromagnetic energy on a signal of interest while simultaneously minimizing radio frequency energy in directions of interfering signals. The reliability of such arrays, especially in commercial satellite and defense applications, can be addressed by hardware redundancy, but at the expense of increased volume, mass as well as component and design cost.
This thesis proposes the development of new models and optimization algorithms to dynamically adapt beamforming arrays to mitigate interference and increase hardware reliability. The contributions of this research are as follows. First, analytical models are developed and experimental results show that small antenna arrays can thwart interference using dynamically applied stochastic algorithms. This type of in-situ optimization, with an algorithm dynamically optimizing a beamformer to thwart interference sources with unknown positions, inside of a anechoic chamber has not been done before to our knowledge. Second, it is shown that these algorithms can recover from hardware failures and localized faults in the array. Experiments were performed with a proof-of-concept four-antenna array. This is the first hardware demonstration showing an antenna array with live hardware fault recovery that is adapted by stochastic algorithms in an anechoic chamber. We also compare multiple stochastic algorithms in performing both anti-jamming and hardware fault recovery. Third, we show that stochastic algorithms can be used to continuously track and mitigate interfering signals that continuously move in an additive white Gaussian noise wireless channel.

Design of CW THz Photonic Transmitter based on Low Pass-Filter and Bow-tie W...IJECEIAES
This paper presents the design of Continuous Wave Terahertz photonic transmitters which is composed from photodetector (PD) associated to a wideband antenna, low–pass filter (LPF) and DC Probe. Firstly, we have developed the bow-tie wideband antenna using an EM solver Momentum integrated in ADS “Advanced Design System”. Then we had optimized a low-pass filter which is responsible of blocking the RF signal providing from the antenna to reach the DC probe. And finally, we have validated into simulation the CW THz photonic transmitter. The three structures are based on multi-layers GaAs substrate, which is the most widely used for THz circuit design. The dimensions of the Whole circuit are 776.788 × 303.39 .

A novel fast time jamming analysis transmission selection technique for radar...IJECEIAES
The jamming analysis transmission selection (JATS) sub-system is used in radar systems to detect and avoid the jammed frequencies in the available operating bandwidth during signal transmission and reception. The available time to measure the desired frequency spectrum and select the non-jammed frequency for transmission is very limited. A novel fast time (FAT) technique that measures the channel spectrum, detects the jamming sub-band and selects the non-jammed frequency for radar system transmission in real time is proposed. A JATS sub-system has been designed, simulated, fabricated and implemented based on FAT technique to verify the idea. The novel FAT technique utilizes time-domain analysis instead of the wellknown fast Fourier transform (FFT) used in conventional JATS sub-systems. Therefore, the proposed fast time jamming analysis transmission selection (FAT-JATS) sub-system outperforms other reported JATS sub-systems as it uses less FPGA resources, avoids time-delay occurred due to complex FFT calculations and enhances the real time operation. This makes the proposed technique an excellent candidate for JATS sub-systems.

The final thesis defense presentation for my master's project. The purpose of this thesis was to compare alternative wireless links for transfer of data from sink motes of remote wireless sensor networks to a central repository. A few different protocol stacks to be implemented in the WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) uplink gateway and along with them a few implementation environments based on open source software and low-power hardware were discussed. To facilitate measurements and experimental validation, some of the alternatives have been implemented. Experiments have been made using two of the amateur radio bands, the 144 MHz band (VHF) and the 433 MHz band (UHF). The parameters studied include throughput, range, power-requirements, portability and compatibility with standards.
Using different protocol stacks, different bands and sometimes different hardware 5 solutions were designed, implemented, tested and experimented with. Namely these solutions are called Radiotftp, Radiotftp_process, Radiotunnel, Soundmodem and APRX in this thesis.
After the implementation phase, there was an open-field experimentation to measure the aforementioned parameters. The tests were conducted in Riddarholmen, Stockholm of Sweden. These open-field experiments helped us obtain real-life measurements about power, throughput, stability etc. Experiments were conducted in a range of from a minimum of 2 meters to a maximum of 2.1 kilometers with some of the solutions.
In the end, some of these solutions proved themselves to be viable for the purpose of data communications for remote wireless sensor networks. Radiotftp gave the best throughput in both bands where it proved itself to be difficult to develop further applications. Radiotftp_process removed the necessity for a Linux running gateway machine but it was unable to work with faster baud rates. Radiotunnel opened up the path for a range of network applications to use radio links, but it also proved that it was unstable. On the other hand Soundmodem and APRX which were based on standard and open-source software proved that they were stable but rather slow. It was proven that every approach to problem has its advantages and disadvantages from different aspects such as throughput, range, power-requirements, portability and compatibility.

DESIGN & ANALYSIS OF RF ENERGY HARVESTING SYSTEM FOR CHARGING LOW POWER DEVICESJournal For Research
Finite electrical battery life is encouraging the companies and researchers to come up with new ideas and technologies to drive wireless mobile devices for an infinite or enhance period of time. Common resource constrained wireless devices when they run out of battery they should be recharged. For that purpose main supply & charger are needed to charge drained mobile phone batteries or any portable devices. Practically it is not possible to carry charger wherever we go and also to expect availability of power supply everywhere. To avoid such disadvantages some sort of solution should be given and that can be wireless charging of mobile phones.[4] If the mobile can receive RF power signals from the mobile towers, why can’t we extract the power from the received signals? This can be done by the method or technology called RF energy harvesting. RF energy harvesting holds a promise able future for generating a small amount of electrical power to drive partial circuits in wirelessly communicating electronics devices. RF power harvesting is one of the diverse fields where still research continues. The energy of RF waves used by devices can be harvested and used to operate in more effective and efficient way.

Overview:
Electromagnetic interference is increasingly becoming a problem in complex systems that must interoperate in both digital and RF domains. When failures due to EMI occur it is often difficult to track down the sources of such failures using standard test receivers and spectrum analyzers. The unique ability of real-time spectrum analysis and synchronous time domain signal acquisition to capture transient events can quickly reveals details about the sources of EMI.

Low Noise Amplifier using Darlington Pair At 90nm Technology IJECEIAES
The demand of low noise amplifier (LNA) has been rising in today’s communication system. LNA is the basic building circuit of the receiver section satellite. The design concept demonstrates the design trade off with NF, gain, power consumption. This paper reports on with analysis of wideband LNA. This paper shows the schematic of LNA by using Darlington pair amplifier. This LNA has been fabricated on 90nm CMOS process. This paper is focused on to make comparison of three stage and single stage LNA. Here, the phase mismatch between these patameters is quantitavely analyzed to study the effect on gain and noise figure (NF). In this paper, single stage LNA has shown the 23 dB measured gain, while the three stages LNA has demonstrated 29 dB measured gain. Here, LNA designed using darlington pair shows low NF of 3.3-4.8 dB, which comparable to other reported single stage LNA designs and appreciably low compared to the three stages LNA. Hence, findings from this paper suggest the use of single stage LNA designed using Darlington pair in transceiver satellite applications.
2009 IEEE AP-S-Compact Coaxial-Line-Fed Printed Monopole Antenna for Lower-Ba...Saou-Wen Su
A compact, printed, ultrawideband (UWB) monopole antenna suitable to be as an internal antenna attractive for future UWB applications is demonstrated. The proposed antenna is of a small form factor with the dimensions 6 mm × 33 mm and can easily be fed by 50-ohms mini-cable line. The antenna mainly comprises a monopole antenna, a feeding strip and a ground plane, all printed on a small FR4 substrate. The monopole antenna is printed on both layers of the substrate with an end portion on the back for control of the first/lower resonant mode of the antenna. The feeding strip in between the monopole antenna and the ground plane is further offset to achieve better impedance matching and proper upper-edge operating frequency. With the proposed antenna structure, which provides an operating bandwidth of larger than 2.7 GHz, the impedance bandwidth by 10-dB return loss can easily cover the 3.1–4.85 GHz band, the lower band of the UWB operation.
A trade-off design of microstrip broadband power amplifier for UHF applications IJECEIAES
In this paper, the design of a Broadband Power Amplifier for UHF applications is presented. The proposed BPA is based on ATF13876 Agilent active device. The biasing and matching networks both are implemented by using microstrip transmission lines. The input and output matching circuits are designed by combining two broadband matching techniques: a binomial multi-section quarter wave impedance transformer and an approximate transformation of previously designed lumped elements. The proposed BPA shows excellent performances in terms of impedance matching, power gain and unconditionally stability over the operating bandwidth ranging from 1.2 GHz to 3.3 GHz. At 2.2 GHz, the large signal simulation shows a saturated output power of 18.875 dBm with an output 1-dB compression point of 6.5 dBm of input level and a maximum PAE of 36.26%.
OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUES FOR SOURCE FOLLOWER BASED TRACK-AND-HOLD CIRCUIT FOR ...VLSICS Design
Since the current demand for high-resolution and fast analog to digital converters (ADC) is driving the need for track and hold amplifiers (T&H) operating at RF frequencies. A very fast and linear T&H circuit is the key element in any modern wideband data acquisition system. Applications like a cable TV or a broad variety of different radio standards require high processing speeds with high resolution. The track-and-hold (T&H) circuit is a fundamental block for analog-to digital (A/D) converters. Its use allows most dynamic errors of A/D converters to be reduced, especially those showing up when using high frequency input signals. Having a wideband and precise acquisition system is a prerequisite for today’s trend towards multi-standard flexible radios, with as much signal processing as possible in digital domain. This work investigates effect of various design schemes and circuit topology for track
and-hold circuit to achieve acceptable linearly, high slew rate, low power consumption and low noise
