Brainstorming exercise

• The UNECE module (to collect data on the
  VAW indicators) can be used either as a
  module in a survey on another topic, or as a
  module in a dedicated survey on VAW.
• For each of these uses, list advantages and
  disadvantages/challenges (at least 3 of
  each).
• You can do this alone or together with a co-
  student.

 be complete. You may have come up with
  other advantages and disadvantages…
Module in dedicated survey on VAW
Advantages
• Sample can be designed for the purpose of the survey
• Interviewers can specially be selected and trained for this purpose
• Ethical and safety measures designed for this survey easier to follow
• Involvement of stakeholders will facilitate use of data
• Can apply special measure to enhance enclosure > higher prevalence
• Well designed questionnaire with more relevant variables enables
  better in-depth understanding

Challenges
• Expensive
• Special training of interviewers needed
• Extra time needed in the busy schedule of statistics

Module in survey on other topic
Advantages
• Cheap
• Explain the survey based on other topic (easy to get collaboration)
• No need to find extra time in already busy schedule of Statistics

Challenges
• Suitability of main vehicle survey
• Sample issues/representativeness (sampling was done for main
  survey)
• Type of Interviewers, need of (extra) special training
• Placement of module in the questionnaire
• How to introduce/explain the module to respondents
• Special challenges to meet ethical and safety standards (how to
  explain that for this section the respondent needs to be alone, how
  to provide support etc. )
• Risk of higher levels of non-disclosure > lower prevalence
• Fewer variables thus not suited for in-depth understanding            5
Ethical and safety measures are
always needed for either type of
               use.
This will be dealt with in detail in
    module 5 of this e-course.
Minimum conditions for using
           a short module to a survey on
                   another topic
• Measures to protect safety of respondents and
  interviewers
• Crisis intervention and referrals to specialized services
  for respondents who need this
• Special training and emotional support and follow-up
  for interviewers

  • 1. Dedicated survey on VAW vs. module on VAW in a survey on another subject 1

Brainstorming exercise • The UNECE module (to collect data on the VAW indicators) can be used either as a module in a survey on another topic, or as a module in a dedicated survey on VAW. • For each of these uses, list advantages and disadvantages/challenges (at least 3 of each). • You can do this alone or together with a co- student. 2

  • 4. Module in dedicated survey on VAW Advantages • Sample can be designed for the purpose of the survey • Interviewers can specially be selected and trained for this purpose • Ethical and safety measures designed for this survey easier to follow • Involvement of stakeholders will facilitate use of data • Can apply special measure to enhance enclosure > higher prevalence • Well designed questionnaire with more relevant variables enables better in-depth understanding Challenges • Expensive • Special training of interviewers needed • Extra time needed in the busy schedule of statistics 4
  • 5. Module in survey on other topic Advantages • Cheap • Explain the survey based on other topic (easy to get collaboration) • No need to find extra time in already busy schedule of Statistics Challenges • Suitability of main vehicle survey • Sample issues/representativeness (sampling was done for main survey) • Type of Interviewers, need of (extra) special training • Placement of module in the questionnaire • How to introduce/explain the module to respondents • Special challenges to meet ethical and safety standards (how to explain that for this section the respondent needs to be alone, how to provide support etc. ) • Risk of higher levels of non-disclosure > lower prevalence • Fewer variables thus not suited for in-depth understanding 5
  • 6. Ethical and safety measures are always needed for either type of use. This will be dealt with in detail in module 5 of this e-course.
  • 7. Minimum conditions for using a short module to a survey on another topic • Measures to protect safety of respondents and interviewers • Crisis intervention and referrals to specialized services for respondents who need this • Special training and emotional support and follow-up for interviewers 7
