Lin and Ihar showed how blogging has been introduced across a whole course at their College. This opens the content of the course to the learner contribution; addresses different learning styles and needs; creates a community of learning; and advances learners’ IT & information skills.

In this session we will describe the process of migrating modules and content from Moodle to Blackboard following the merger of the University of Wales Newport (Moodle) with University of Glamorgan (Blackboard) to form the University of South Wales. We will describe the challenges from a number of perspectives. The technical challenge was to move a large volume of complex content while maintaining structural integrity, while the human challenge was to train and support 2-300 academic staff in a new VLE in six months. We will detail the strategies and tools we are using in this (ongoing) process as we prepare for the new academic year in September 2015 and will be of interest to VLE managers, Learning Technologists and Support and Training professionals.

Delivering effective games based learning
Game-based learning uses branching story scenarios to develop communication skills for adult learners. The eTrees project aims to create an online application using branching stories and games to improve workplace communication. The consortium includes experts in serious games development, adult education providers, and organizations focused on learning methodologies. Games appeal to adults and are effective because they replicate real-life problems, allow experimentation and replay, and promote active, experiential and self-directed learning through goals, feedback, challenge and storytelling. The eTrees tool will be tested in 2014 and launched to allow trainers and businesses to create customized branching scenarios.
