2. Volunteer Engagement: What do we know?
UMKC University Advancement
Study after study shows
that engaged volunteers
make stronger advocates
and more consistent,
reliable long-term donors...

3. Volunteer Engagement: What do we know?
UMKC University Advancement
... but we don’t do a good
job stewarding their gifts of
time.
...we don’t acknowledge the
value of their gifts.
...we don’t use their
donated time to
strategically advance our
mission.

Gifts of Time: Capturing and Coding
Simple shared
tracking system
for board,
committee, and
other volunteer
opportunities
throughout the
year.
Advancement
Services and all
staff commit to
submitting and
recording hours.

Gifts of Time: Capturing and Coding
Individual
volunteer
hours are
coded in
database of

financial
gifts are
recorded

Gifts of Time: Benchmarking and Valuation
Guidelines for volunteer hour submissions:
-Must be unpaid volunteer time
-Student and faculty volunteerism is captured by another
method/department so Advancement’s process reflects primarily
external alumni and friends
-What doesn’t count: attending an event as a guest, paid or
compensated time
-What counts:
Board and committee service | meetings | event planning | helping
at an event (ie, registration) | scholarship selections | dean’s or
department advisory councils | student/career panels | student
engagement programs | classroom speaking | unpaid clinical
rotation supervision or preceptorships | ambassadors volunteering
at admissions, recruitment or other events, etc.

Gifts of Time: Benchmarking and Valuation
UMKC began recording and tracking volunteer hours in
2006-07, so we now have 10+ years of data. The total in
2006-07 was 124,000 hours. Today, we regularly record
more than 230,000.
The university uses the Independent Sector’s annual
valuation of a volunteer’s time (hourly rate) to calculate the
inkind value. Last year, that total was more than $5 million
in donated time.

ADDED VALUE:
UMKC’s wealth screenings and campaign assessments have
included the volunteer information for the past 10 years,
which has provided more robust prospect and affinity
information.

Gifts of Time: Celebrating Donors
Each year, UMKC produces a volunteer thank you card
from the chancellor and vice chancellor for Advancement.
It’s signed by anyone on staff who works with that
volunteer during the year. We hold two weeks of signing
sessions where deans, alumni and development staff and
others write handwritten notes in the cards of those who
have been volunteers for their programs or schools.
Most cards mail out filled with notes and signatures. This
piece is the one we receive the most feedback about from
alumni and friends.
