Mental Attitude: Cannabis Compound Aids Patients with Severe Epilepsy. Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is one of the
most severe forms of epilepsy and involves multiple types of seizures, including tonic, atonic, atypical absence, and myoclonic.
Soon, individuals who suffer from LGS may be able to reduce their seizure frequency by taking a daily dose of a chemical
component of cannabis called cannabidiol. Previous research suggests that cannabidiol has therapeutic potential in reducing
anxiety as well as improving bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other mental health conditions. In this study, researchers
found that individuals with LGS who took cannabidiol every day for 14 weeks experienced a reduction in atonic seizures—also
known as drop seizures—by more than 50%. American Academy of Neurology, April 2017
Health Alert: Too Many Kids Still Being Injured on ATVs. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) look like a lot of fun, but they can
be very dangerous for children. Current data from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reveals that there
were nearly 100,000 ATV-related injuries nationwide that required treatment in the ER or hospital in 2013 and about 25% of
those cases involved kids under the age of 16. In a new study, researchers reviewed 16 published studies and found that factors
linked to high rates of death and injury among children included: powerful ATVs, younger drivers, lack of safety equipment,
and risky driving behavior. The researchers also found that the most common causes of ATV-related injuries among children
were vehicle rollover, collision with a stationary object, and ejection from the vehicle.

Diet: Is Zinc Important to Cardiac Health? Oxidative stress occurs when more free radicals are generated in a cell than can
be intercepted by antioxidants such as vitamin E. Due to its high metabolic activity, the heart is particularly susceptible to
oxidative stress. In a new study, researchers used young piglets to study the relationship between zinc levels and cardiac
function. They found that when they deprived the piglets of nutritional zinc, the concentration of glutathione and vitamin E
(antioxidants) in the heart muscle declined alongside zinc levels. They conclude that the body's zinc supply affects the heart's
ability to deal with oxidative stress at an early stage. These findings are important because current research indicates that
oxidative stress is a predisposing factor for heart diseases. Journal of Nutrition, February 2017
Exercise: Exercise Helps Ease Arthritis… Patients with various forms of arthritis and other rheumatic diseases who engage in
regular aerobic and resistance exercise may experience reductions in inflammation and joint damage, as well as improvements
in their disease-related symptoms. British Journal of Sports Medicine, April 2017
Chiropractic: Reduction of Labor & Delivery Time with Chiropractic Care? A recent case study compared the labor and
delivery duration of a pregnant patient who did not receive chiropractic care during her first pregnancy but did receive
chiropractic care throughout her second pregnancy. This 28-year-old female initially presented for tailbone pain that began after
the birth of her first child, which involved a long and difficult labor and delivery. During her course of chiropractic care, she
became pregnant with her second child and continued to receive treatment up until her delivery. She reported that her second
birth experience was both shorter and easier than the first. This case study suggests that chiropractic care during pregnancy can
have beneficial effects on the birthing process. Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health – Chiropractic, April 2017
Wellness/Prevention: Reducing Violence During Screen Time. To minimize the amount of violence kids see in movies, TV,
and video games, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the following: don't allow children under age six to see any
violent content; play video games or watch shows or movies with your child to understand what he or she watches and offer a
chance to talk about the values you share as a family; and if you are not comfortable with what your child sees, do not be afraid
to enact viewing restrictions. American Academy of Pediatrics, April 2017
