Mental Attitude: Vascular Disease Risk Factors at Age 50 May Increase Alzheimer’s Risk. In this study, researchers found
that adults with vascular disease risk factors at midlife were twice as likely to have elevated levels of amyloid plaque in the
brain—which scientists speculate may play a serious role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Modifiable vascular
disease risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity, poor cholesterol levels, an unhealthy diet,
and smoking. Journal of the American Medical Association, April 2017
Health Alert: Heroin Epidemic Continues to Grip America. Heroin use continues to escalate, with opioid overdoses playing
a role in about 78 deaths per day in the United States (US) alone. In a new study, researchers surveyed more than 79,000 people
and found the proportion of Americans using heroin increased from less than 1% in 2001-2002 to nearly 2% in 2012-2013, with
the greatest increase among young white males. Dr. Bertha Madras, a professor of psychobiology at Harvard Medical School
writes, "There is a dire need for a national, effective campaign specific for different populations—such as the public, patients,
and physicians—on the life-threatening hazards of opioid-induced addiction and overdose and street heroin/fentanyl."

Diet: Food Preservation. Freezing food helps retard the growth of the microorganisms and enzymes that cause food to spoil.
To freeze food safely, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends the following: make sure your freezer is set to 0
degrees Fahrenheit (-17.78 degrees Celsius) or below; store food in freezer-safe bags, heavy plastic containers, or heavyweight
aluminum foil; date and label foods before freezing; and use older foods first to avoid freezer burn.

Exercise: Physical Fitness Reduces Cancer Mortality Risk. Among a sample of 5,876 military veterans whom researchers
tracked for nearly ten years, those who met federal physical activity guidelines (at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity
physical activity and muscle-strengthening exercises on two or more days each week) were 20% less likely to die from cancer
during that time. Preventative Medicine, April 2017
Chiropractic: Musculoskeletal Disorders Common Among Home Healthcare Workers. Work-related musculoskeletal
disorders (MSD) are common among healthcare workers, but data about such disorders in home-based healthcare (HHC)
workers is lacking. A recent study set out to examine the prevalence of work-related MSD among 300 female HHC workers in
Italy. In the study, researchers found 28.3% of the participants suffered from one or more work-related musculoskeletal
disorders, nearly double the percentage reported by a control group of non-healthcare workers. Furthermore, the researchers
note that HHC workers have an elevated risk for lumbosacral back pain and upper-limb symptoms.

Wellness/Prevention: Is Your Child Getting Enough Sleep? According to the National Sleep Foundation, the warning signs
of insufficient sleep among children include: difficulty waking, and struggling to get moving within 15 minutes; sleeping in at
least two hours during days off; falling asleep at school and during brief car trips; and irritability, hyperactivity, or other unusual
behaviors. According to the National Sleep Foundation, April 2017
