Mental Attitude: A Daily Walk Protects the Brain. Going for a long walk each day may cut your risk for dementia by about
a third. In this study, researchers found that participants who walked for at least one hour each day during middle age had a 28%
lower risk for developing dementia in their later years. Age and Aging, May 2017
Health Alert: Childhood Obesity Increases Risk of Developing Diabetes. Researchers analyzed the BMI measurements and
diabetes diagnosis records of nearly 370,000 children and found that obese children had a four times higher risk of developing
type 2 diabetes than children who maintained a normal body weight. Study author Dr. Ali Abbasi writes, “Diabetes imposes a
heavy burden on society because the condition is common and costly to treat… Estimates indicate one in eleven adults has type
2 diabetes, or about 415 million people worldwide. Given that diabetes and obesity are preventable from early life, our findings
and other research will hopefully motivate the public and policymakers to invest and engage in diabetes prevention efforts.”

Diet: Women Need Omega-3 Fats During Pregnancy. Consuming omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy not only provides
benefits to an expectant mother but a greater intake of these healthy fats can also have positive effects on their baby’s visual and
cognitive development. To ensure expectant mothers get an adequate intake of these essential fatty acids, the Academy of
Nutrition and Dietetics advises pregnant women to choose fish that are low in mercury, such as salmon, catfish, cod, and
sardines; avoid fish that are high in mercury, such as swordfish and shark; eat foods fortified with DHA; take a DHA
supplement; and eat eggs from hens fed DHA-rich microalgae. Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, April 2017
Exercise: Take the Stairs to Increase Energy and Motivation. Many people turn to caffeine for a burst of energy after a poor
night of sleep; however, a new study suggests that we would be better off taking a ten-minute walk up and down the stairs. In a
small study involving 18 sleep-deprived college students, researchers found that those who walked up and down stairs at a
regular pace for ten minutes felt more energized and motivated than the participants who consumed 50 milligrams of caffeine.

Chiropractic: Pelvic Tilt and Low Back Pain. Among a group of 60 young adults either with or without low back pain,
researchers found a statistically significant relationship between anterior (front) pelvic tilt and both increased lumbar lordosis
(curvature) and lower back pain. Overly tight hip flexors—the muscles that connect the lower spine to the legs—can tilt the
pelvis excessively forward, which can increase the lumbar lordosis and raise the risk for lower back pain. Doctors of
chiropractic are trained to assess pelvic tilt when evaluating a patient with lower back pain and if pelvic tilt is a contributing
factor, they can help patients by releasing and stretching the muscles involved.

Wellness/Prevention: Tension-Type Headaches Linked to Vitamin D Deficiency. Though tension-type headaches (TTH) are
among the most common experienced by adults, their cause is not well-understood. In this study, researchers looked at the
vitamin D blood levels of 200 adults, half of whom had chronic tension-type headaches. They found the participants in the TTH
group were three-times more likely to be vitamin D deficient, and there appeared to be a relationship between lower vitamin D
levels and an increased prevalence of musculoskeletal pain, muscle weakness, muscle and bone tenderness, and fatigue. Future
studies will seek to uncover if vitamin D supplementation may benefit TTH patients. Headache, May 2017
