Mental Attitude: Family Breakups Hard on Girls' Health. Researchers from the University of Illinois have found that a
family breakup can have long-term negative consequences for children, especially girls. Dr. Andrea Beller, an economist who
studies educational attainment and the effects of single-parent family living explains, "Between ages 6 and 10 is an important
life period when girls are particularly vulnerable… Early father absence is adversely associated with smoking behavior, overall
health, and depression well into adulthood. And the pattern of findings for depression over the time periods suggests that family
structure has a more complex role in girls' mental than physical health."

Health Alert: Shingles Increase Short-Term Risk of Stroke. Adults 50 and older are at a 50% elevated risk of stroke during
the three months following an episode of shingles. Approximately 95% of the world’s population is infected with the virus that
causes chickenpox, and shingles is a viral disease caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus, which causes a painful skin
rash in a limited area. Up to one third of infected individuals will go on to develop shingles during their lifetime. Lead
investigator Dr. Barbara P. Yawn adds, "We found there was a 50% increased risk of stroke for three months after shingles, but
we also found that people who had shingles had many more risk factors for stroke than those who had not, suggesting they had
worse health overall." She adds that one possible explanation is that stroke is a consequence of the inflammatory response that
occurs with an episode on shingles. Mayo Clinic Proceedings, December 2015
Diet: Chemical Found in Some Herbs May Boost Brain Function. A substance most commonly found in thyme, parsley, and
chamomile called apigenin appears to trigger the formation of human brain cells. Researchers applied apigenin to human stem
cells in a laboratory dish and found that the stem cells transformed into neurons after 25 days—an effect not seen in the absence
of apigenin. The findings show promise as a possible future treatment for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s
disease, Parkinson’s disease, and schizophrenia. Advances in Regenerative Biology, December 2015
Exercise: Benefits of Walking. The Arthritis Foundation lists the following benefits of walking: improves circulation,
strengthens bones, leads to a longer life, lightens mood, leads to weight loss, strengthens muscles, improves sleep, supports joint
health, improves breathing, slows mental decline, and lowers Alzheimer’s disease risk. Arthritis Foundation, December 2015
Chiropractic: Head Posture Important for Breathing. While the head only represents 6% of total body weight, researchers
found head and neck posture can have an effect on the biomechanics of chest movement. They report that both a forward head
posture (commonly associated with computer use) and the tilting of the head forward (commonly seen with smartphone use)
can cause disturbances in the shape of the chest and result in decreased respiratory movements.
Acta of Bioengineering and Biomechanics, April 2015
Wellness/Prevention: Are Your Teeth Sensitive? If your teeth have grown more sensitive over time, it may be due to a loss of
tooth enamel. The Mayo Clinic advises those with sensitive teeth to avoid food and beverages high in acid, wine, yogurt,
brushing or flossing teeth too vigorously, and using an abrasive toothpaste. Mayo Clinic, December 2015
