Mental Attitude: Singing Helps Those with Early Dementia. Finnish researchers say that singing can boost both brain
function and mood in people with early stage dementia. In a study that included 89 people with mild to moderate
dementia, researchers found those placed in a group that practiced singing experienced improvements in memory,
thinking skills, and the ability to find their way around. They also found that both singing and listening to music helped
reduce depression in participants, especially individuals with mild Alzheimer’s disease. Study leader Dr. Teppo Sarkamo
notes, "Our findings suggest that musical leisure activities could be easily applied and widely used in dementia care and
rehabilitation." Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, December 2015
Health Alert: More US Kids Have Type 1 Diabetes. The number of kids in the United States (US) living with type 1
diabetes has increased by nearly 60% since 2002, and experts are unsure why. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease
in which the immune system attacks the cells that produce insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Researchers
found that the prevalence of type 1 diabetes stood at just under 1.5 cases per 1,000 children and teenagers in 2002. That
figure rose to 2.3 per 1,000 by 2013. The reasons for the rising prevalence remain unclear, but some past research has
suggested that a lack of diversity in gut bacteria may trigger type 1 diabetes in children with a genetic susceptibility.

Diet: Eating Fried Fish May Boost Diabetes Risk. After analyzing data regarding 35,583 Swedish men to determine a
link between fish consumption and type 2 diabetes, researchers found those who regularly consumed six or more servings
of fried fish per month were 14% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who seldom consumed fried fish.

Exercise: Stationary Cycling Improves Gait and Balance in Stroke Patients. For patients who've experienced a stroke,
exercising on a stationary bike may result in improved balance and walking ability. In this study, 16 recovering stroke
patients exercised on a stationary bike for 30 minutes, five days a week for six weeks. Compared with a control group that
did not exercise, the participants in the stationary cycling group experienced significant improvements in both gait
abilities and balance. Journal of Physical Therapy Science, November 2015
Chiropractic: Frozen Shoulder Responds to Chiropractic Care. Patients with pain and reduced motion in their
shoulder may want to consider visiting a doctor of chiropractic. A 51-year-old man presented for chiropractic care with
pain and a loss of motion in his right shoulder that had been present for two days. After receiving spinal manipulative
therapy to restore motion in the patient's upper cervical spine, the patient experienced immediate improvements in both
pain and range of motion in the affected shoulder. Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research, December 2015
Wellness/Prevention: Smoking Bans & Taxes Help Smokers Quit. A new study suggests that cigarette bans and high
cigarette taxes help reduce smoking rates. After interviewing 4,300 residents in 487 American cities, investigators found
that cigarette bans are effective at limiting smoking among casual users who smoke less than a pack a day, while high
taxes have the most impact on individuals who smoke more than a pack a day. American Journal of Public Health,
December 2015
