Mental Attitude: Risk Factors for Transitioning to Alzheimer's Disease. Among a group of 437 older adults with diagnosed
mild-cognitive impairment (MCI), a team of Chinese researchers found the following factors may increase an individual's risk
for transitioning to Alzheimer's disease: being female, advancing age, reading only occasionally, smoking, drinking alcohol,
cerebrovascular disease, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes. Comprehensive Psychiatry, October 2017
Health Alert: Increasing Waist Equals Increased Cancer Risk in Older Women. Researchers followed nearly 5,900
postmenopausal women for up to twelve years and found that abdominal fat was a greater factor than total body weight when it
came to the risk of lung and gastrointestinal cancers. The researchers say their findings highlight the need for weight
management priorities among older women who are prone to abdominal weight gain. Study author Dr. Line Maersk Staunstrup
writes, “The average elderly women can very much use this information, as it is known that the menopause transition initiates a
shift in body fat towards the central trunk area. Therefore elderly women should be especially aware of their lifestyle when they
approach the pre-menopause age.” European Society for Medical Oncology, September 2017
Diet: Omega-3s May Keep Gut Flora Diverse and Healthy. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as fish, nuts, and flaxseed
oil appear to benefit the gut. In this study, researchers found that individuals with higher serum levels of omega-3 fatty acids
had a greater number of healthy gut bacteria, including bacteria associated with lower inflammation and a reduced risk of
obesity. The findings add to the other known health benefits of a diet rich with omega-3 fatty acids.

Exercise: Small Increases in Physical Activity Can Reduce Immobility, Disability in Older Adults. Seniors who engaged
in just 48 minutes of moderate exercise per week experienced improvements in their overall physical function and mobility that
were not observed among members of a control group who merely attended health education workshops. The finding
demonstrates how just a small increase in physical activity can lead to big improvements in quality of life among older adults.

Chiropractic: Is Your Dizziness Caused By Your Neck? Cervicogenic dizziness (CGD)—dizziness that results from
dysfunction in the neck—is difficult to diagnose due to the lack of an objective test. A recent analysis of questionnaires
completed by 40 patients with known cervicogenic dizziness and 40 patients with dizziness caused by other issues indicates that
those with CGD are 2.28 times more likely to answers “sometimes” or “always” to the following three questions: 1) Does
looking up increase your problem? 2) Because of your problem, are you afraid to leave your home without having someone
accompany you? 3) Do quick movements of your head increase your problem? The researchers believe their finding can be used
as a brief assessment tool to aid in screening patients for CGD. Cervical spinal manipulation, a treatment performed by doctors
of chiropractic, can reduce joint dysfunction in the neck, often improving symptoms such as dizziness.

Wellness/Prevention: Parents Getting Better at Child Car Seat Safety. Spot checks of more than 7,700 children aged 15 and
younger at 25 different locations throughout Indiana between 2009 and 2015 revealed that rear-facing seat placement among
infants increased from 84% in 2009 to 91% in 2015, while the use of rear-facing car seats increased from 12% to 61% among
toddlers aged 12 months to 17 months during this time. American Academy of Pediatrics, September 2017
