Mental Attitude: New Substance Abuse App Approved. The United States Food and Drug Administration has approved its
first mobile application to help treat the abuse of alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, and stimulant medications. Before granting its
approval, the federal agency reviewed a twelve-week clinical study involving nearly 400 people and found that 40.3% of app
users abstained from further alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, or stimulant use, compared with only 17.6% of those who did not use
the app. Food and Drug Administration, September 2017
Health Alert: More US Kids Presenting to ER with Opioid Addiction. Increasing numbers of children and teens in the
United States (US) are turning up in emergency rooms dependent on opioids, such as prescription painkillers and heroin.
According to researchers presenting at the American Academy of Pediatrics annual meeting, the number of people under age 21
diagnosed with opioid dependence or addiction increased from just over 32,200 in 2008 to nearly 50,000 as of 2013. The
findings offer the latest glimpse into the national opioid epidemic and shows that this is not just a problem for adults. As a
result, more research is needed to get a handle on the scope of opioid abuse among kids.

Diet: Too Much Sodium Intake Tied to Diabetes. Swedish researchers report that individuals who consume more than 3,150
mg of sodium per day have a 58% higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes than those who consume less than 2,400 mg of
sodium per day. European Association for the Study of Diabetes, September 2017
Exercise: Physical Activity Outside of School Important for Child Health. According to new research, children who are
active outside of school in addition to normal school activities are 67% more likely to meet recommended physical activity
guidelines of one hour of physical activity per day than students who refrain from sport/exercise programs after school and on
weekends. The British Heart Foundation's Dr. Mike Knapton writes, โBeing physically active improves children's health, helps
them maintain a healthy weight, aides learning and development, and it also builds social skills. This research should give
impetus to parents and teachers to give children opportunities to be physically active throughout the day, whether it's
encouraging them to attend an after-school club or replacing screen time with a run around in the park.โ

Chiropractic: Improving Neck Posture May Reduce Radiculopathy. This case study involves a 31-year-old patient with
severe cervical radiculopathy, muscle weakness, and neck pain. X-rays revealed the patient exhibited forward head posture with
a loss of normal cervical curvature. After a 17-week treatment plan that included mirror image extension exercises, cervical
extension traction, and spinal manipulation, the patient reported their neck pain reduced significantly, and that the pain,
numbness, and weakness that radiated into the arms had resolved. Journal of Physical Therapy Science, August 2017
Wellness/Prevention: Healthy Lifestyle Cuts Prostate Cancer Risk. Spanish researchers report that men who regularly
exercise and eat a diet rich with fruits, vegetables, fish, and nuts have a lower risk for developing prostate cancer.
