Mental Attitude: Impaired Sense of Smell Linked with Dementia Risk. Among a group of 2,906 seniors, those who
had difficulty correctly identifying smells were more than twice as likely to develop dementia over the following five
years. This finding confirms previous research that has identified reduced olfactory abilities as an early indicator of
cognitive impairment. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, September 2017
Health Alert: Bipolar Patients Have Increased Risk for COPD. Taiwanese researchers report that individuals with
bipolar disorder may have a much greater risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) than the general
population. After analyzing data concerning 766,427 patients collected over the course of five years, the researchers found
that those with bipolar disorder had a 94% increased risk for developing COPD.

Diet: Just Three to Four Servings Per Day… An analysis of a decade of data concerning 135,335 individuals from 613
communities across 18 countries around the world found that consuming three to four servings of fruits, vegetables,
and/or legumes each day can lower an individual's risk for early death by as much as 22%. The Lancet, August 2017
Exercise: Yoga & Meditation Beneficial for Mind-Body & Stress. In this study, participants who engaged in a three-
month yoga and meditation program experienced reductions in both self-reported anxiety and depression, while also
becoming better able to handle stress. A comparison of pre- and post-program testing revealed that participants
experienced an increase in a neuromodulator that plays a vital role in learning and memory as well as the regulation of
processes such as inflammation, immunity, mood regulation, stress response, and metabolism. Study author Dr. Baruch
Rael Cahn writes, “To our knowledge, our study is the first to examine a broad range of pro- and anti-inflammatory
markers in a healthy population before and after a yoga-meditation intervention. Our findings justify further studies of
yoga and meditation retreats assessing for the replicability, specificity and long-term implications of these findings.”
Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, September 2017
Chiropractic: CTS Affects Nerve Function in the Hand. While we normally associate carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)
with symptoms like pain, numbness, and tingling in the affected hand, a new study finds that CTS can also impair the
sense of touch. In the study, researchers conducted temperature sensitivity tests on 81 CTS patients and 44 healthy
controls and found that the hands of patients with severe CTS were less sensitive to detecting both hot and cold
temperatures. The researchers conclude, “These results support the growing body of evidence that carpal tunnel syndrome
can affect small afferent fibers.” Muscle & Nerve, October 2017
Wellness/Prevention: “Green” Schoolyards Promote Better Health. The American Academy of Pediatrics finds that
students experience better mental and physical health if their schoolyards include features such as outdoor classrooms,
native gardens, storm water capture, traditional play equipment, vegetable gardens, trails, and trees. Additionally, these
benefits appear to extend into the surrounding community. American Academy of Pediatrics, September 2017
