Mental Attitude: Body Temperature May Give Clues to Coma Treatment. Adjusting the “body clock” may help brain-
injured patients regain consciousness from a coma. In a preliminary study, researchers monitored the body temperature of 18
people with severe brain injuries to calculate the length of each patient’s circadian rhythm. Based on the data, the researchers
found that patients with a higher level of consciousness had body temperature patterns more closely aligned with a healthy 24-
hour rhythm. The findings may allow doctors to develop treatments to awaken coma patients by creating environments that
mimic the light patterns of night and day to achieve a normal sleep-wake cycle. Neurology, April 2017
Health Alert: Four in Ten Americans Breathe Dirty Air. According to a new report, air quality in the United States is
improving, but nearly 40% of Americans live in counties with unhealthy levels of air pollution, which may place them at risk
for premature death and other health threats such as lung cancer, asthma attacks, cardiovascular damage, and developmental and
reproductive problems. Harold Wimmer, the president and CEO of the American Lung Association comments, "Even with the
ongoing improvements, too many people in the United States live where the air is unhealthy for them to breathe. This is simply
unacceptable. Everyone has a fundamental right to breathe healthy air. Our nation's leaders must do more to protect the health
of all Americans." American Lung Association, April 2017
Diet: Plant Protein Appears to Protect Against Type 2 Diabetes. University of Eastern Finland researchers have released a
new study that adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that the source of dietary protein can play a role in one’s risk for
developing type 2 diabetes. Researchers analyzed the diets of 2,332 men between the ages of 42 and 60 and followed them for
nearly 20 years. They discovered that individuals with a greater intake of plant-based proteins had a 35% lower risk for type 2
diabetes than those whose primary protein source came from animals. British Journal of Nutrition, April 2017
Exercise: Planning a Walking Workout. If you prefer walking as your go-to exercise, you can reduce your risk of injury by
splitting your trek into three stages: warm up, speed up, and cool down. To accomplish this, the National Institute of Diabetes
and Digestive and Kidney Diseases recommends the following: walk slowly to warm up; after a few minutes, speed up to a
brisk pace that still allows to breath and speak easily; cool down by walking slowly for the last few minutes; and practice slow,
gentle stretches as part of your cool down. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, April 2017
Chiropractic: Manual Therapy Provides Benefits to CTS Sufferers. A recent study compared the effectiveness of manual
therapy to common physiotherapy modalities in the management of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The study included 140
patients with mild to moderate CTS who were randomly assigned to the manual therapy (MT) group (which included the use of
neurodynamic techniques, functional massage, and carpal bone mobilization techniques) or to a physiotherapy group (which
included laser and ultrasound therapy). At the end of the study, investigators found that both therapies had a positive effect on
nerve conduction, pain reduction, functional status, and subjective symptoms; however, those in the manual therapy group
reported greater improvements in pain reduction, subjective symptoms, and functional status. The therapies utilized in this study
are commonly used by chiropractors when managing CTS, especially carpal bone mobilization.

Wellness/Prevention: Do You Struggle with Dandruff? If you suffer from a flaky scalp, the Mayo Clinic recommends these
lifestyle changes: keep stress in check; if your hair is oily, shampoo each day; limit time in the sun; and apply sunscreen on any
exposed skin. Mayo Clinic, April 2017
